Bags of Love

       Last year, I was assigned to work at an office near my mother's house, so I stayed with her for a month. During that time, I helped out with the housework and contributed to the groceries.

      After less than a week, I started noticing that the groceries were running out pretty quickly — we were always suddenly out of something.  {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (wonder) how my mum could consume them so quickly, I began observing her daily routine for two weeks. To my surprise, I found that she would pack a paper bag full of canned goods and head out every morning at about nine. Eventually, I decided to follow her and {#blank#}2{#/blank#} happened truly amazed me. She was taking the food to the refugee camp, in {#blank#}3{#/blank#} she distributed it to children.

       I asked around and found out that my mum was very well known in the area. The kids were very friendly with her and even looked up to her as if she were their own mother. Then it hit me —why would she not want to tell me about what she {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (do)? Was she worried about how I would react or that I would stop {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (buy) the groceries if I found out?

     When she got home, I told her about my discovery. {#blank#}6{#/blank#} she could react, I gave her a big hug and told her she didn't need to keep it a secret {#blank#}7{#/blank#}me. She told me that some of the children lived with an older lady in a shelter while others slept on the streets. For years, my mum has been helping out by giving them whatever food she could spare. I was so impressed by {#blank#}8{#/blank#} selfless she was.

    Liu Fang is a famous pipa soloist, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} whose music is strongly influenced by traditional singing. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (graduate) from Shanghai Conservatory of Music, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} she studied the pipa and the guzheng, she went back to work in her hometown Kunming. She then moved to Canada in 1996 and {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (live) there since then. For her, the biggest challenge of playing the pipa is to respect the traditions but{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (add) her own style. In her opinion, classical Chinese music and traditional Chinese painting are quite {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(like). The former has {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (silent) that is full of music {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the latter features empty spaces which give life to the whole painting. As a soloist, she enjoys performing live, for she likes the atmosphere of a concert. Not having a concert for a long time may put her in a state of {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (depress). She also enjoys the time immediately after the concert to share the feelings and ideas with the audiences, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (listen) to their opinions about the music.

    There is a woman {#blank#}1{#/blank#}（name）Daisy who has devoted all her life to {#blank#}2{#/blank#}（attend）to the homeless children. It's generally recognized that what she has done for children {#blank#}3{#/blank#}（deserve）to be respected by everyone. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}（personal）speaking, her selfless behavior sets a good example to us.

Dear Li Kang,

    I'm exciting to tell you about the American school system. Secondary school in the US usually covered seven years, grades six to twelve. At the end of twelfth grade, American student receive the high school diploma. Students need a high school diploma if they want to go to the college.

    The school year is dividing into two semesters, the first of that is September through December, and the second January through May. We have a long summer vacation! We start school in 7: 50 am and we finish at 3 pm.

    I take part in many amazed after­school activities—I play football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis and I went to theater club.

    Will you tell me something about your summer vacation and the Chinese school system in your next letter?
