That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theater. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.

As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.

About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.

Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.

Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, "Alisa Camacho?" I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eyes. "Is this what you're looking for?" he asked, holding up a small square shape.

It was nearly 3 a. m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn't be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

Binge-watching is when a person watches more than one episode of a show in quick succession(一连串,连续)". With developments in the speed and connectivity of the internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have their favorite shows streamed directly to their television at their convenience.

This behavior is nothing new. In fact, " binge-watching" has been officially listed in dictionaries since 2015. The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps to encourage it. Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week basis, an entire series will become available concurrently. Once the episode finishes many platforms will display pop-ups with "you might like suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode".

However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back, almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and one quarter have neglected their household chores. Next we'll be missing work!

Bingeing has other connections-binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking. All of them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. Lindsey Fussell, consumer group director, said: "The days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist watching multiple episodes around the house or on the move." If people find binge-watching hard to resist, coupled with the fact that it has shown to lead to negligence in many, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction?

The countless of information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, when the activity begins to bleed into other areas, causing us to stop functioning then it becomes a problem. So, what's the answer? Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, "A little of what you fancy does you good."

    (1) How did the writer develop the first paragraph?
    A . Listing some examples. B . Telling a story. C . Giving a definition. D . Analyzing the cause and effect.
    (2) Which of the following words can best replace the underlined word in paragraph 2 ______.
    A . naturally B . gradually C . Similarly D . necessarily
    (3) What Lindsey said in Paragraph 4 implies that ______ .
A . people have no patience to do work B . people can't control their movements C . people are addicted to watching television D . people can't resist the temptation
    (4) What advice did the writer give at last?
A . To draw life lessons from the episodes. B . To watch episodes in a moderate way. C . To enjoy entertainment as much as possible. D . To keep online media from stopping functioning.

Long before iPhone, the cigarette was the companion of choice for restlessness. And long before Facebook and WeChat, it was tobacco that promised to better your social life. Now, quitting smartphones has become the new quitting smoking.

Of course, technology does not yellow your teeth, cause disease or lead to cancer. But some individuals are so concerned that device addiction is damaging their mental health. In order to reduce their dependence, even in Silicon Valley, people are turning off the messages that constantly buzz for their attention, banning smartphones from the bedroom and, curiously, changing the colors on their screens to a less tempting scale of gray.

The big tech companies will have to work out how to respond to this new generation of quitters. Facebook is the first to go public with its attempt, hoping its recent move can make the social network more homely.

Last year the tech industry got a bad name —Big Tech—with unfortunate echoes of other industries that have faced fierce opposition, including Big Tobacco. Like them, the tech industry has to reduce concern from a new generation of activist shareholders (股东) that are questioning its role in the world. These campaigns are never as fierce as those faced by Big Tobacco. In the 1990s, socially responsible investors refused to put money in tobacco stocks.

It is far difficult for investors to challenge Big Tech and hard to separate the good these companies do in the world-connecting old friends and giving space for people to share their ideas-from the bad. In the meantime, stopping using technology remains problematic. In The World Without Mind: The Existential Threat of Big Tech, Franklin Foer argues that tech should be seen in a similar way to junk food: a convenience that some reject for more continuing nutrition.

So we need to do more to turn the tide. In the same way that public service announcements made smoking around your children taboo (禁忌), we can warn parents against losing themselves in their smartphones while taking care of kids. We can also create no-smartphone zones at dinner. Eventually smartphones could be banned from all public places and help us give our attention to the people around us instead.

    (1) How did people keep close relationships with others in the past?
    A . By smoking. B . By drinking. C . By phoning. D . By dining out.
    (2) Why is the tech industry called Big Tech?
A . It has an unfortunate name. B . It is as big as Big Tobacco. C . It plays a bad role in the world. D . It is a giant in Silicon Valley.
    (3) What can we infer from Franklin Foer's argument about the tech?
A . It promotes social development. B . It is still favored by some people. C . It is worse than Big Tobacco. D . It offers continuing nutrition.
    (4) Which can be the best title for the passage?
A . Creating a No Smartphone Life B . Smartphones Enrich Our Social Life C . Smoking Does Greater Harm Than Smartphones Do D . Quitting Smartphones Is the New Quitting Smoking

Four simple ways to stay positive. Trying to stay positive, both in good times and bad, is a great way to improve your quality of life. Try these four methods on a daily basis.

Don't think a lot about negativity.

Of course, staying positive 24 hours a day, seven days a week is a bit difficult. Letting things get to you is normal, and it's actually healthy to cry or express frustrations once in a while.

It's when those negative moments control your life that your emotional balance is at risk. However, don't give that sadness another second in your day.

What you put into your body directly affects how you feel on the outside. Fill yourself with good, healthy foods like fruits and vegetables and limit snacking. Exercise is equally of great importance. Take a few days out of your week for at least a half an hour of activity, and try to stick to a routine.

        Be kind to others.

Making someone's day a bit brighter not only puts a smile on his or her face, but also yours as well. Remember to smile and treat each person with pity and respect. Good deeds are contagious (传染的), and your positive attitude may spread among others.

Take it one day at a time.

Being positive isn't an instant thing. It's a steady effort that we follow every hour of every day. Instead, focus on living in the moment and doing what you can to make each moment better.

    A. Eat healthy and stay fit.

    B. Take your lunch breaks outside.

    C. Don't worry about what the future may bring.

    D. Gratefulness helps you appreciate life in bad times.

    E. Good feelings come from acts of kindness and selflessness.

    F. Take a few minutes to feel sad and accept what happened.

    G. Even going outside for a walk and enjoying the sunshine improves your mood.

Confucius(孔子) is honored setting the tone for much traditional Chinese music for thousands of years. He(think) to be a music teacher and a (talent) musician who was able to play several instruments expertly. Perhaps for other people around the world, music was meant mainly for amusement. during the time of the Zhou Dynasty about 500BC, music had an important role in making society stable.

How music was used and performed is expressed in several main Confucian books. Confucius taught that (educate) somebody, you should start with poems, emphasize ceremonies, and finish with music.

Musical knowledge was matter of higher learning. It is said that he thought of the six most important (subject) to study, ranking music higher than the other five necessary subjects like writing and mathematics.

Music was so important because the ideal society was to be governed by ritual (礼制) functions, but not by law. In a culture people function according to ritual, music is used to help govern them. So music wasn't really (entertain), but a means for musicians to accomplish political and social goals. Music is (eventual) a means for social happiness.
