The day was Thankful Thursday. Thursday has become my day to go out and do charity(慈善) work with my two1. On this special Thursday, we had no idea exactly2we were going to do. At noon I3to a McDonald's with my daughters because they kept telling me that they didn't have enough to eat at breakfast. There we saw some4people begging(乞讨)in the street and we decided to do something for them.
We ordered several5from McDonald's and started to give them out. We were6to see those thankful people holding up lunch bags. Then we noticed a dirty ,old woman7at the corner. We handed her our final lunch bag. When we8the car and wanted to drive home, she walked to our car and said, "Thank you, lady! No one has ever done9like this for me before. " "Well, I'm glad that we were the10 , "I replied. "So, why don't you eat the lunch now?" I asked.
She just looked at me11her tired eyes and said, "I'm not going to eat this lunch. I have a little girl who just loves McDonald's, but I can12buy it for her because I don't have the money. But tonight she can have McDonald's!"
I don't know13the kids noticed the tears (眼泪) in my eyes. So many times I questioned myself if our acts of kindness were too14to make a difference. However, at that moment, I15that we can't do great things but we can do small things with great love.
When Hanley Fort was six, she saw a person who was homeless standing on
The street in her town. She wanted to help him, so she and her mom gave the man a sandwich and a bottle of water.
Hailey kept thinking about the man and what it was like to be hungry. She knew that fresh fruits and vegetables often aren't available (可获得的) at food banks, where homeless people may get canned or boxed food. Hailey had an idea. "There was a garden in our backyard, and we weren't using it, "she said. “I asked my mom if I could use that garden to grow food for the homeless.”
Now, several years later, Hailey's garden has provided many people with strawberries, blueberries, peas, tomatoes, and other fresh food. When food is ready to harvest (收获), Hailey picks, washes, and bags it. Then she and her mom give the bags to people on the street or to a local food bank. Hailey has given away more than 550 pounds of fruits and vegetables so far!
While handing out food, Hailey and her mom often see people more than once. They lean their names and talk with people about what it's like to be homeless. Last week, when Hailey found out that people without homes didn't always have safe or comfortable places to sleep, she thought of a new project-building a shelter.
With the help of her mom, Hailey built a shelter big enough for a person to sleep in. It has walls, windows, a roof, a locking door, a solar light, and curtains made by her sister, Josie. Hailey's family is now working with local groups to find a good place to park the shelter for someone in need.
Hailey has learned a lot since she gave away her first sandwich. She has also leaned to see people who are homeless as individuals (个体). To help others, she says, "Start small. You can always grow over the years.

Have you ever found beauty in life, even during difficult times?
Here's a movie called Life is Beautiful. The story happens in 1939. Orefice, a young man, is a Jew(犹太人). He's funny and clever, and falls in love with an Italian girl named Dora. Later, they marry and have a son named Joshua and run a bookstore together.
Unluckily, they and many other Jewish families, are taken to a concentration camp (集中营) by German Nazi(纳粹党). In the camp, Orefice explains to Joshua that the camp is a game and he must perform the activities. Orefice also tells his son each of the activates will give them ports and the person who gets to 1,000 points will win a tank(坦克). The most moving is that the people in the camp also keep the lie(谎言) to themselves. Orefice tries hard to protect Joshua's innocence (天真). He even teaches all of the German children how to say "Thank you" in Italian. Though Orefice is killed at last, Joshua is alive when the allies (同盟军) arrives.
The film shows us how to protect those we love in the face of difficulties. As the French writer Romain Rolland once said, "There's only one heroism(英雄主义) in the world: to see the world as it is and to love it." And this best describes the life and actions of our hero, Orefice.
① Orefice teaches German children Italian.
② Orefice's family are in a concentration camp.
③ Orefice is dead and the allies arrives.
④ Jew in the camp didn't tell Joshua the truth.
The USA is a very big country to visit, so choose carefully the places to see and the time to go. Bring a good map because you may want to travel around.
New York and Washington D.C. are good places to visit in May or October. It's not too hot then. In winter there's a lot of snow.
The best plan is to arrive in New England in September. The weather starts to get cooler and the trees start to change color. It's a good idea to bring your camera because you may want to take photos of the autumn leaves.
4,000 kilometers away in Los Angeles, California, the weather is fine all year round. It's nice to see the sun in December! Bring your swimsuit because you might want to swim in the sea.
In Seattle, in the northwest, it isn't very cold, but there's a lot of rain, so bring an umbrella. It's pleasant to visit Alaska in July and August but it might be cool in the evening. So remember to wear some warm clothes. But don't come in winter. It'll be dark all day and freezing cold.
In Texas and the southeast, there are storms from time to time in summer and fall. It's usually very hot and sunny compared to many other places.
So when's the best time to visit the USA, do you know?

China has once again showed its ability to change the world with its "new four great inventions: high-speed railways, electronic payments, shared bicycles and online shopping."
"My wallet is not in use. I can buy (无论什么)I want simply with a phone," said Lin Jinlong, an overseas Chinese student from America, adding that "it is (难以置信的)that the pancake sellers are using Alipay."
And the bikes (他们自己) are not new, but now they are very popular. (作为)a fan of bicycles, Tom expressed his love for China's shared bicycles, saying that "Shared bikes are (鼓励)people to be more active."
Nowadays, it is clear that China is no (不再)copying western ideas. China is leading in many ways such as social messaging app Wechat. This is partly because China went directly to mobile. China has the (最多)mobile users in the world."
"According to the new four great inventions", Charlie Dai, a principal from America, said these things are good for the (发展)of economy all over the world. Lin also shared his experience of traveling by Chinese high-speed train from Beijing to Tianjin more than 100 km away. The journey takes only half an hour, (然而), in America, which has only two railways, such a journey may take up to three hours. So Chinese have achieved great (成功)in the world.
We've had a discussion about handing in homework on WeChat in our class meeting. Liu Yaxuan is for it. She thinks if we use digital devices (电子设备) (proper), we can get a lot from them. It helps teachers check (student) homework more quickly. Also, teachers don't need (spend) much time on reciting(背诵) face-to-face. , they can just listen on WeChat. However, student, Ji Xiang is against it. He says, "As far as I know, boys are crazy about (play) games together on the internet while girls love to chat happily online for long. It's the (bad) for their eyes, and we know that it (lead) too many health problems so far. But even so, their parents won't find out they think their kids are doing right things. And secondly, teenagers can't part mobile phones easily. Besides, it's easier to cheat and feel pressure.
What about your opinion?
Do you often help the people who are in need?
One day, two boys were walking along the road to school when they saw an old woman carrying a large basket of pears. The old woman looked very tired. They went up and said, "Are you going to town? If you are, we'll help you carry your basket."
"Thank you," said the woman, "That's very kind of you." Then she told them that she was going to the market to sell the pears. So the boys decided to lift the basket together. They walked slowly with the heavy basket, but they were happy.
The other day, I saw a little girl pick up a piece of banana peel(香蕉皮). She threw it into the dustbin(垃圾箱). "I hope nobody would throw that on the street," she said, "Someone may slip and fall."
Perhaps some people may say that these are not great things. That's right. But almost all great things are made up of (由…组成) such small things. We shouldn't wait for the time to do great things. We should begin with these things that are full of love.
But almost all great things are made up of such small things.
