A decade ago, colored lights danced around the living room on New Year's Eve and happy music was played. Upstairs, the children were asleep. But I wasn't feeling happy. In mid-December, my husband and I had been informed that he had cancer and that he was going to die. He had less than a year left, the doctors said.
In the years since that painful season, I have come to look back upon New Year's Eve as an ending and a beginning. New Year's Eve brings a halt to the endless commitments that fill our daily lives and a chance to reflect.
New Year's Eve is full of possibility and anticipation. What will be the surprising experiences and delightful successes in the coming year? But also, what disappointments are waiting for us in the next twelve months?
In many ways, New Year's Eve and the days that surround it are a line between past and future. That line is made up of a series of moments of transition(过渡) that take us out of the old and into the new. Transition can be challenging for many of us. It's about letting go of the familiar and diving headlong (迅猛地) into the unfamiliar.
Just as, back then, I had to face letting go of the life I had led with my beloved husband and stepping into a new world as a widowed mom. I find that each year I have to step out of the version of me that suited the year that is ending and ease into the version of me who will rise to the goals I am holding for myself for the year ahead.
Last year at this time, I sat in a chair in southern France and drank in the stillness(沉静) and beauty of the countryside around me. The three children and I had brought into this world talked and laughed around the table beside me as we enjoyed a lunch of bread and cheese.
I was filled with a sense of joy and I had a glowing(热情洋溢的) heart that was full of hope. It was another ending and another beginning. May we all transition into the best of what lies ahead. May we all find happiness this holiday season.
When it comes to modern communication, security is a big concern. It seems like we're forever hearing about hackers leaking(泄露) emails, passwords and other important personal information.
But thanks to a breakthrough by Chinese scientists, who won the 2018 Newcomb Cleveland Prize in February, we may soon never have to worry about our data again. This is thanks to the satellite called Micius that uses cutting-edge technology to send and receive information.
Micius is the first satellite of its kind to use quantum key distribution(量子密匙分发), which uses particles (粒子) that transmit(传输) light to transfer information from one point to another. Currently, it can communicate with two base stations(基站), both of which are located high up in the mountains in two different areas of Tibet, around 1,200 kilometers apart. Data is sent between the satellite and one of the base stations in the form of a ray of light. This makes it almost impossible for data sent and received using quantum satellite technology to be stolen, as the connection will be broken if someone tries to hack it.
"Any eavesdropper(偷听者) on the quantum channel attempting to gain information … can be found by the communicating users," the scientists wrote in the paper.
However, the technology does have a few limitations. For example, the process only works at night, as the information isn't able to pass through sunlight.
Despite these small issues, the scientific community across the world has reacted positively to China's achievements in this groundbreaking project.
"This Chinese experiment is a quite remarkable technological achievement," Artur Ekert, a professor of quantum physics at the University of Oxford, told BBC News.
And Karl Ziemelis, an editor for Nature, told Xinhua, "It's a testament(见证)to China's investments and significant efforts in the physical sciences that this group has been able to push research in practical quantum communication technologies to such an astronomical(天文学的)height."
There is good news for students of vocational(职业的) colleges in China: The government has announced plans to develop modern vocational education.
In the Government Work Report delivered to the National People's Congress on March 5, Premier Li Keqiang spoke of the need to accelerate the development of modern vocational education to ease the pressure in the job market and meet the demand for skilled workers and technicians.
It is noteworthy that Li said that enrollment(招生) in higher vocational colleges in China should increase by 1 million this year, the first time the central authority has set a clear target.
This comes after the news of the large shortfall(不足) in high-level technicians, despite the fact that China has millions of technical workers, according to China Daily.
China is expected to face a shortage of 3 million skilled workers who are able to operate robot and high-end numerical(数字的) control machines by 2020, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The shortfall will grow to 4.5 million by 2025. In addition, vocational education is at present unsatisfactory, although there're many vocational colleges in China.
"In some vocational schools, the education methods and curriculum are not able to meet the demand of upgrading manufacturing(制造业升级)," Xing Hui, director of the Vocational Education Center of the National Academy of Education Administration, told Xinhua News Agency. "As can be seen from job markets, companies still can't recruit qualified technicians even with high salaries."
Some foreign countries have set a good example with respect to vocational education. For example, Germany has a dual(双重的) system in its vocational education. Teaching content and methods are determined by industries and training schools to reflect current industrial practice, reported China Daily. The system requires that students should be trained at both the school and the company, with company training as the main focus.
In Switzerland, the apprenticeship(学徒制) system is popular. Two thirds of Swiss students start vocational education after finishing middle school, reported The Telegraph. Many have academic and vocational training at the same time. They work as apprentices in a company for three or four days a week and study in school for the rest of the time. The experience of these countries shows vocational schools can cooperate with employers to better prepare students for the market, according to China Daily.
"With the rising of the skilled workers' status and income, it is believed the vocational education system in China will assume a bigger role in social and economic development," commented China Daily.
a. China will put much effort into the job market to meet the demand for skilled workers and technicians.
b. Vocational education is pleasant, because there're many vocational colleges in China.
c. Enrollment in higher vocational colleges in China might increase by 1 million this year.
d. 2/3 of Swiss students start vocational education after Junior High, which is normal in foreign countries.
a. that will assume a bigger role in social and economic development.
b. whose teaching content and methods are determined by industries and training schools.
c. whose students work as apprentices in a company for three or four days a week and study in school for the rest of the time
d. which requires that students should be trained at both the school and the company, with company training as the main focus.
"Did you hear what happened to Adam last Friday?" Lindsey whispers to Tori.
With her eyes shining, Tori brags, "You bet I did. Sean told me two days ago."
What are Lindsey and Tori talking about? It just happens to be yours truly, Adam Freedman. I can tell you that what they are saying is (a) not nice and (b) not even true. Still, Lindsey and Tori aren't very different from most students here at LintonHigh School, including me. Many of our conversations are gossip(闲话). , which are just as follows.
. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic—breakups, troubles at home, even dropping out—that a person would rather keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicer the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.
If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it? The answer lies in another effect of gossip: the satisfaction it gives us. Sharing the latest rumor can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don't. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the "in group". .
Gossip can also have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act.
. Translated into high school terms, this means that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The do's and don'ts conveyed through gossip will never show up in any student handbook.
. The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your "juicy story" might have.
A. I have noticed three effects of gossip B. The effects of gossip vary depending on the situation C. An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about D. Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group E. Recently, studies have found some most effective ways to deal with gossip in our daily life F. In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority G. That is to say, you may be consciously or not affected by words and expressions when chatting with your friend |
Raynor Winn and her husband Moth became homeless due to their wrong investment. Their savings had been 1 to pay lawyers' fees. To make matters worse, Moth was diagnosed(诊断)with a 2 disease. There was no 3, only pain relief.
Failing to find any other way out, they decided to make a 4 journey, as they caught sight of an old hikers'(徒步旅行者)guide.
This was a long journey of unaccustomed hardship and 5 recovery. When leaving home, Raynor and Moth had just £320 in the bank. They planned to keep the 6 low by living on boiled noodles, with the 7 hamburger shop treat.
Wild camping is 8 in England. To avoid being caught, the Winns had to get their tent up 9and packed it away early in the morning. The Winns soon discovered that daily hiking in their 50s is a lot 10 than they remember it was in their 20s. Raynor 11 all over and desired a bath. Moth, meanwhile, after an initial 12, found his symptoms were strangely 13 by their daily tiring journey.
14, the couple found that their bodies turned for the better, with re-found strong muscles that they thought had 15 forever. "Our hair was fried and falling out, nails broken, clothes 16 to a thread, but we were alive."
During the journey, Raynor began a career as a nature writer. She writes, "17 had taken every material thing from me and left me torn bare, an empty page at the end of a(n) 18 written book. It had also given me a 19, either to leave that page 20 or to keep writing the story with hope. I chose hope."
The College Entrance Exam, also known as Gaokao, is one of the most influential tests scheduled June 6th to 8th. For this, Chinese students are separated into Science and Liberal Art at high school, a practice that allows them to stay (compete) in the College Entrance Examination by choosing preferred subjects. However, thing began to change when the policy of College Entrance Exam Reform (publish).
And now, an ongoing reform of China's college entrance exam and enrolling system, which students used to be selected for their performance on a single test, (extend) to cover more provinces in China since 2018, according to the Ministry of Education.
In 2018, the reform was expanded to eight provincial-level (region), namely Hebei, Liaoning, Jiangsu, Fujian, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong and Chongqing, where Year-1 high school students (start) from fall 2018 needed to prepare for the change.
It brought the total number of regions implementing the reform 14, according to the ministry.
With the reform, the new selection and enrollment rules may differ slightly from region to region. In northern China's Hebei Province, students will only have to sit the annual national college entrance test for three subjects, Chinese language, math and foreign language (include). Their performances during high school academic tests will also serve as measurable indicators. Their results in the comprehensive quality evaluation throughout the high school will be used as reference.
