Two of the hardest things to accomplish in this world are to acquire wealth by honest effort and, having gained it, to learn how to use it properly. Recently I walked into the locker room of a rather well-known golf club after finishing a round. It was in the late afternoon and most of the members had left for their homes. But a half-dozen or so men past middle age were still seated at tables talking aimlessly and drinking more than was good for them. These same men can be found there day after day, and, strangely enough, each one of these men had been a man of affairs and wealth, successful in business and respected in the community. If material prosperity were the chief necessity for happiness, then each one should have been happy. Yet, it seemed to me, something very important was missing, else-there would not have been the constant effort to escape the realities of life through scotch and soda. They knew, each one of them, that their productivity had ceased (停止). When a fruit tree ceases to bear its fruit, it is dying. And it is even so with man.

What is the answer to a long and happy existence in this world of ours? I think I found it long ago in a passage from the book of Genesis which caught my eye while I was looking through my Bible. The words were few, but they became memorably impressed on my mind. “In the sweat of the face shall you eat the bread.

To me, that has been a challenge from my earliest recollections (memories). In fact, the battle of life, of existence, is a challenge to everyone. The immortal words of St. Paul, too, have been and always will be a great inspiration to me. At the end of the road I want to be able to feel that I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.

(1)、Which of the following is indicated in the first paragraph?
A、Wealth results from honest effort. B、The men seated at tables in the locker room are lost in the significance of life. C、For some people, no way can be found to escape the realities of life other than scotch and soda. D、The men acquire wealth by planting fruit trees.
(2)、The underlined sentence “In the sweat of the face shall you eat the bread” means ________.
A、Bread tastes delicious when sweat pours off your face B、No pains, no gains C、Failure is the mother of success D、Bread comes from the sweat on your face
(3)、We learn from the passage that the author ________.
A、was a wealthy person in the community B、held a positive attitude towards an active life C、was fond of associating with celebrities (名人) D、kept a secret of the reason why he was so impressed
(4)、What is implied in the passage by the writer?
A、To use wealth properly, cat, drink and be merry. B、Where there is a will, there is a way. C、As life is but like a dream, a man is like a fruit tree. D、If you cease to struggle, you cease to live.

A child who suffers bullying(霸凌) usually has low self-esteem and their ability to learn and be successful at school is greatly lessened. Therefore, bullying must be stopped.

The best and most obvious way to stop bullying in schools is for parents to change the way they raise their children at home. Of course, this is much easier said than done and everyone raises their children differently. Bullies, however, come from homes where physical punishment is used and children have been taught that physical violence is the way to handle problems and “get their way”. Bullies usually also come from homes where the parents fight a lot, so children have been modeled on such violence. Parental involvement is often lacking in bullies' lives and there seems to be little warmth.

Early intervention (干预) is truly the best way to stop bullying, but parents of the victims or therapists(治疗师) can't alter the bully's home environment. Some things can be done at the school level, however. Most school programs that address bullying apply a multi-faceted(多层面的) method to the problem.

Hand out questionnaires to all students and teachers and discuss if bullying is occurring. Define exactly what constitutes(构成) bullying at school. The questionnaire is a wonderful tool that allows the school to see how widespread bullying is and what forms it is taking. It is a good way to start to solve the problem.

Get the children's parents involved in a bullying program. If parents of the bullies and the victims are not aware of what is going on at school, then the whole bullying program will not be effective. Stopping bullying in school takes teamwork and concentrated effort on everyone's part. Bullying also should be discussed during parent-teacher conferences and PTA meetings. Parental awareness is the key.

In the classroom setting, all teachers should work with the students on bullying. Oftentimes even the teacher is being bullied in the classroom and a program should be set up to teach about bullying. Children understand modeling behaviors and role-play and acting out bullying situations is a very effective tool. Have students role-play a bullying situation.

When I was in the eighth grade, one caring teacher of mine taught me several useful little techniques. He told me to keep a notebook nearby when I was reading and that I should try to figure out what the main idea of every paragraph was so that I could understand the passages better. It seemed awfully boring at that time, but I decided to give it a try anyway.

It didn't take long before I started reading a book called How to Read a Book that would completely change how I thought about the written word. Thanks to these techniques, I learned to get the most out of reading. I kept applying them over the years until I finally came up with a lot of little techniques for reading a book.

I also eventually came to learn that there were a lot of different kinds of reading. For example, when I read a Stephen King novel, the interesting plot made me completely relaxed. Then there's reading to learn new things, which is what I do when I read personal finance books. There's also reading to understand and grow, which is easily the hardest and the most rewarding. The last kind of reading involves taking a piece of literature or a nonfiction book that you might read for simple pleasure and transforming it into something life-changing, or something that causes you to question some of your deeply-held ideas and beliefs.

How to Read a Book really focuses on the latter two: books that you read to learn about a new topic or to learn a skill, and books that you read to learn about yourself. If you've ever been drawn to read to really improve yourself, this book is well worth the time to read even if it's a bit dry at times. Let's dig in.

A group of graduates, successful in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Before offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and a variety of cups—porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking and cheap, some exquisite and expensive—telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups. And then you began eyeing each other's cups.

Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of life we live. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided us."

God brews the coffee, not the cups. Enjoy your coffee!

"The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the most of everything."

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.

It is generally acknowledged that young people from poorer socio-economic backgrounds tend to do fess well in the education system. In an attempt to help the children of poor families, a nationwide program called "Headstart" was started in the US in 1965. A lot of money was poured into it. It Look children into pre-school institutions at the age of three and was supposed to help them succeed in school. But the results have been disappointing because the program began too late. Many children who entered it at three were already behind their peers in language and intelligence and the parents were not involved in the process. At the end of each day, "Headstart" children returned to the same disadvantaged home environment.

To improve the results, another program was started in Missouri that concentrated on parents as the child's first teachers. This program was based on research showing that working with the family is the most effective way of helping children get the best possible start in life. The four-year study included 380 families who were about to have their first child and represented different socio-economic status, age and family structure. The program involved trained educators visiting and working with the parent or parents and the child. The program also gave the parents some guidance, and useful skills on child development.

At three, the children involved in the "Missouri" program were evaluated with the children selected from the same socio-economic backgrounds and family situations. The results were obvious. The children in the program were more advanced in language development, problem solving and other intellectual skills than their peers. They performed equally well regardless of socio-economic backgrounds or family structure. The one factor that was found to affect the child's development was the poor quality of parent-child interaction. That interaction was not necessarily bad in poorer families.

The "Missouri" program compares quite distinctly with the "Headstart" program. Without a similar focus of parent education and on the vital importance of the first three years, some evidence indicates that it will not be enough to overcome education unfairness.
