江苏省靖江市2015-2016学年七年级下学期期末考试英语测试

阅读下列内容,根据短文内容选择最佳答案。

Although cats may be one of the most popular pets today, little is known about how and when humans and cats set up their close relationship.

The earliest evidence for human–cat interaction dates back to prehistoric Cyprus(史前塞浦路斯), where the remains of a wild cat and a human — dated 9,500 years old — were found buried together

A new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has confirmed the first direct evidence of a human–domestic cat relationship among Chinese farmers 5,300 years ago. Researchers studied the bones of cats, dogs, deer and other animals unearthed in an excavation (挖掘) near a village in Central China. By using some ways, scientists showed that the cats were living on a mostly millet(黍)–based diet, just like the domesticated dogs and pigs from the site.

"The most reasonable explanation for a high consumption of millet–based food is that the cats had formed a stable and mutual relationship with humans and could easily feed on rodents (啮齿动物) around human villages, find leftover food or even have been fed by people intentionally," said Hu Yaowu from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, whose research focuses on the relationship between humans and domesticated animals.

"It is very interesting for us to find the consumption of millet-based foods by the cats, since this kind of evidence had long been missing.” Hu explains. Since cats usually eat meat, such a diet would be unexpected, unless the cats were being fed by people, the study argues. The researchers also found that one of the cats survived to reach old age, implying that it had a safe place to live and enough to eat.

Why the farmers wanted to keep cats nearby or make them "pets" could be answered by other evidence. Chinese archaeologists found some storage containers were specifically designed to keep out rodents — a vermin (害兽) that cats could certainly have helped with.

The simplified theory is that rats were attracted to the food of farmers, and so were harmful to farmers. Cats were attracted to the rats, and so farmers formed a mutually beneficial relationship with cats, taking care of them in return for pest control.

New sea bridge opens in China

A new bridge just opened on October24.The long bridge links(连接)three cities. It is the HongKong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge(HZMB).The bridge looks like the letter "Y ".It is 55 kilometers long. It is the world's longest sea bridge. China spent nine years building this bridge. The HZMB is not just a bridge, but also part tunnel(登道)and part island .In one part, the bridge turns into an undersea tunnel. The tunnel passes through two man-made islands. Large ships can pass by above the tunnel. The HZMB makes it much faster to travel between the three cities. It takes 45 minutes to go from Hong Kong to Zhuhai. In the past, it took four hours.

Chinese scientists made headlines last year by cloning(克隆)a pair of monkeys-Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua. Their names come from the Chinese words zhonghua, or "Chinese nation ". The monkeys were cloned using the same techniques(技术)that were used to produce Dolly, the world's first cloned animal, about 20 years ago. The monkeys could be used as a model to study genetic(遗传的)diseases, including some cancers(癌症).

As one saying goes, where there are Chinese people, there are kungfu legends. Jin Yong was regarded as one of the greatest kung fu fiction writers in China. And for many people, he built a magical kungfu kingdom that they could escape into every now and then. But this kingdom is falling apart now, because he passed away on October 30, 2018, at the age of 94.

Is there intelligent(有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said "no" or "we don't know". But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers(天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists(存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these beings(人生物).

Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old." This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life," say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size-the universe is huge." Tools like the Hubble Telescope(哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies," says Shostak. "And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars.

Some planets going around these stars might be similar to the Earth."

In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes(高倍望远镜) allow scientists to discover smaller planets-the size of Mars or the Earth-in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.

Have beings from space already visited the Earth?" Probably not," says Shostak. "It's a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other ways, such as radio signals(信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don't have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other."

Did you know that each day one person in the USA throws away 4.4 pounds of rubbish? Almost every month, we throw away our own rubbish in packaging alone. Packaging (including boxes, bags, etc.) comes to our homes with the things we have bought. Several weeks ago, the TV news said that in a city in Italy tons of rubbish were piled up in the streets, and the smell was rather terrible. What can we do to help? We should get to know the following Rs.

Reduce To reduce means to make less rubbish. That is one of the first things we all should do for the environment. Reduce your rubbish by doing things like packing your lunch in reusable containers(可再利用的容器), taking smaller portions(份) at dinner so you don't waste food when you have had enough, writing on both sides of paper, and using less water when taking a shower.

Reuse to reuse is to use things again. Think about the bags you get from the shop. They can be reused to carry your lunch, to hold your rubbish, or to collect used cans. You can even take them back to the school next time to carry your things instead of getting a new bag!

Recycle(回收利用) Recycling is an important part of keeping our planet clean and green. It can also save energy. Be sure that you don't throw things in the rubbish bins that can be recycled to make something else Paper, plastic, cans and bottles can all be recycled. But food, electrical waste and mobile phones cant. When you are not sure whether something can be recycled, go to your parents and teachers for advice.

Follow the three Rs, and every one of us can do something to save the Earth. It is also the best way to save ourselves.
