福建省莆田市第八中学2019届高三上学期英语期中考试试卷题
You can read a book for pleasure one time through and be just fine. However, it is harmful to deal with academic reading the same way. In order to read and comprehend a book or article for school, you need to be much more strategic(策略).
Understand types and themes.
In most reading tests, the student is asked to read a passage and predict what might happen next. This is to make sure you're able to infer information from the clues. The type of text of a book helps you make predictions about the action-which helps you.
Read with tools.
Any time you read to learn, use active reading skills and there are tools that are not so good to use. A pencil and a pack of sticky notes will be good tools. You can mark in the margins without any damage. Use your notes to write down thoughts, impressions, predictions, and questions as you read. You create some serious damage when highlighting.
It is not wise to look up new and unfamiliar words as you read. Make a logbook of those new words, and revisit them later. Be sure to keep a logbook of new words and visit it often!
Analyze the title (and subtitles).
Once a text is completed, the writer may reflect on the true message or purpose and come up with a new title.
A. Find out the new words.
B. Work the vocabulary skills.
C. That is, if you want to earn a good grade!
D. A highlighter(荧光笔), on the other hand, can be a really bad tool.
E. What might happen next will help you a lot in reading.
F. Prediction is a common reading comprehension strategy.

The International Space Station proves his prediction that we would not simply visit space but seek to stay there. |
The man who could see the future
The ability to predict the future is a rare talent. American author Isaac Asimov (1920-1992), one of the great science fiction writers of his age, had such a talent. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Now that we're here, let's see what he got right.
{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Asimov thought computers would cause a revolution comparable to the industrial revolution of the 19th century. Specifically, he said that "mobile computerized objects" would be an important part of everyday life. Here, he clearly predicted our world of smartphones, tables and other devices. He also had a great deal to say about space exploration. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}
How did Asimov develop his special sense of future developments? {#blank#}4{#/blank#} He read the newspapers and magazines sold in his parents' candy store. His scientific interest gained sharper focus at Columbia University in New York. Asimov went to study chemistry, but became bored with pure laboratory science. Instead, he thought hard about the social implications (作用) of science. He wanted to communicate his ideas to the public.
{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Asimov had his finger on the pulse (脉搏) of both scientific and social change. He had a clear vision of what was coming around the corner for humanity in his works like the Galactic Empire series (《银河帝国系列》). "His predictions are absolutely fascinating," Calum Chase, an English writer, told BBC News. "He was a genius."
