JUST ASK I'm Patrick, but you can call me Pat. This is the space where I can help you with your daily life problems, one-on-one. Go ahead and ask away! |
Q Dear Patrick, My roommate, Jenny, doesn't wash her clothes much and they smelled. I don't know how to talk to her. What should I do? Lily |
A Hi, Lily. Problems like these are normal when people are living with roommates. I've lived with roommates before. If there is a problem, I make sure to speak up about it and not let the problem get worse. As the famous saying goes, "The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now." The same goes for good communication. You can find a good time to talk about it, like in the afternoon after classes. When you talk with her, try not to be angry about it. You can use a "compliment sandwich", something like, "You've been a good roommate so far, however I can't help but notice the smell coming from your clothes. Could you please make sure to wash them?" Again, it's far better to be honest and easy-going. Don't pretend the problem will go away. Pat |

Are you good at learning English grammar? What do you think about learning grammar when studying a foreign language?
I was a young English teacher in a middle school. One day, a student asked, "Mr. Lewis, what is the difference between a period(句号) and a comma(逗号)?" I hated these grammar rules and hardly understand them myself. As I looked at the textbook, I knew that even if I told this student all the different rules about commas, he wouldn't remember them.
I was also in no mood(心情) for a long lesson. My mum had died just a few short weeks ago. I missed her so much. All I wanted to do was stay in bed, but my own young family was living a difficult life and I knew I had to take every day of work I could.
I looked at the textbook again but couldn't read it because my eyes were so watery. All at once, however, I got an idea. "A period is the end of a sentence or a thought," I said, "A comma, on the other hand, is just a short pause(停顿) before the sentence continues on." When I finished saying this, my heart suddenly felt lighter. I smiled and thought of my mum continuing on in a place much brighter and happier than the one I was in now.
That little moment of light helped me as I continued to miss my mum over the months and years to come. Recently I remembered it once again when I saw this sentence in a book I was reading: "Death is not a period, only a comma."
Our lives are a sentence and a story that goes on forever. Our time here is only a part of it.
Our planet is facing a big problem. It's called environmental pollution. What is it? And why is it so bad? Let's find out!
What is Environmental Pollution?
Environmental pollution is that the harmful things are put into the air, water, and soil.
These harmful things can make our planet sick and affect the life on it.
Sources of Pollution:
★Air Pollution
Cars, factories, and power plants(电厂) release harmful gases into the air.
★Water Pollution
Factories, waste water, and plastic waste contaminate our rivers, lakes, and oceans.
★Soil Pollution
Chemicals from factories and pesticides from farming can harm the soil.
Effects of Pollution:
·Animals and plants can die.
·Our air and water can become unsafe.
·Climate change can get worse.
What Can We Do?
·Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: We should try to use less, reuse things, and recycle what we can.
·Green Energy: Use solar, wind, or water energy instead of fossil fuels.
·Plant Trees: Trees absorb harmful gases and give us oxygen.
·Awareness: Tell others about the importance of protecting our environment.
Conclusion:
Environmental pollution is a big problem, but if we all work together, we can make our planet healthy again. Let's start taking action today!
Scanning QR codes makes life easier or harder?
Today, QR codes(二维码) are everywhere in our lives. However, scanning(扫描)them a lot might sometimes feel like a burden(负担). Is scanning QR codes for everything really convenient? What do you think?
Some people think using QR codes is convenient for us. We can scan a QR code to get on the bus without using cash. When you're at a store, you just need to show the QR code on your phone. Then you have paid for your toys or snacks. You don't need to worry about getting the numbers wrong. Also QR codes help us get lots of information, and it's all fast and right. For example, in the zoo, there are QR codes everywhere. Scan them and you can learn all kinds of amazing facts about animals, like having a personal tour guide right on your phone.
But Some people think scanning QR codes feels like a burden now in our everyday lives.
First, it takes more time. Back in the day, ordering food at a restaurant was simple-just talk to the waiter! Now, you might need to take out your phone and scare a QR code to follow a restaurant or an official account(公众号). If there's no Internet, you can't even do that. Also when you scan some QR codes, there might be pop-up(弹出) ads. They may take you to some other pages. Or you need to share more of your information. Later, you may get calls and junk(垃圾)messages.
Learning is a lifelong journey. We all want to know how to learn much (well). I hope my advice can help you a little.
First, have some learning plans before exams. This could be from one month to six (month). It depends on the (important) of the exam. If you are learning the final exam, you should make a one—month plan.
Second, think about (you)environment. Make sure the place where you are going to learn is comfortable with enough light. However, if you are the kind of person that likes listening to music while learning, you have to find out what kind of music (work) best for you. (general) speaking, you can also choose (classic) music instead of pop or rock music.
Third, have enough rest. Your mind will work less effectively you learn for too long Many people suggested learning hour with a ten-minute break.
