Amsterdam, the capital and most populous city in the Netherlands, is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, famous for its beautiful canals, top art museum, cycling culture, and Red Light District. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.

    Must-See Attractions

Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. You'll also want to check out Amsterdam's Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. The top museums to visit are the Rijksmusuem, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a popular place for celebrity spotting and nightlife today.

    Transportation

Travelers should be aware that Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the busiest airports in the world. This airport is located about 15 kilometers southwest of city center. You can catch a train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station, which has many connecting routes. It's typically not a good idea to drive a car to the city center because traffic is heavy and parking is difficult to find. Cycling is incredibly popular here, and it's easy to find cheap bike rentals around town. Amsterdam has a flat terrain(地形) and is a great city to explore on foot.

    Money Saving Tips

Unless you really want to see the tulips(郁金香) blooming, avoid booking between mid-March and mid-May. This is when hotel and flight prices rise.

Look for accommodations in Amsterdam's South District, where rates are generally cheaper than in the city center.

Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money.

Instead of hiring a tour guide, hop on a canal boat. They're inexpensive and will give you a unique point of view of the city.

Check out our homepage to view price comparisons for flights, hotels, and rental cars before you book.

    (1) Which attraction was built with the original purpose of drawing the rich?
A . Albert Cuyp Market. B . The Ann Frank House. C . The Van Gogh Museum. D . The Canal Ring.
    (2) Which means of transportation is not advisable in Amsterdam according to the passage?
    A . The plane. B . The train. C . The car. D . The bike.
    (3) Which way can help visitors save money in Amsterdam?
A . Seeing the tulips blooming in spring. B . Avoiding accommodating downtown. C . Buying car tickets at the machine. D . Hiring a local tour guide.

Even though one out of three American children live within a mile of their school, almost not half of those students often bike or walk to class, scientists report.

Children who live in the South, in country areas, or who have college-educated parents, are among those least likely to bike or walk to school, notes the report, which is published in July.

Sarah Martin and her workmates at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) studied materials from more than 7, 000 children between 9 and 15 years of age.

They found that almost 35 percent of the children lived within one mile of their schools. Children between 11 and 13 years old were more likely to walk or bike than 9-year-olds. Children whose parents had a high school education were more likely to bike or walk than children with college-educated parents.

"The majority of children are missing an opportunity to increase daily physical activity," Martin said in a prepared statement.

According to the CDC, nearly one in five (18. 8 percent) children between 6 and 11 years old are overweight. Increased daily physical activity is one of the methods the CDC gives to help deal with obesity (肥胖)in children.

Martin said that there are all kinds of reasons why children in city areas might be more likely to bike or walk. They said the fact is that schools may be in mixed-use neighborhoods where it is more possible to bike or walk, compared with other places where there may be fewer safe sidewalks.

    (1) Sarah Martin and her workmates found that         .
A . younger children would like to bike or walk to school B . older children are much stronger than the younger children C . kids whose parents received less education walk more D . some children are becoming much lazier than others
    (2) According to the CDC, many children are overweight because they         .
A . eat too much every day B . have unhealthy meals C . are too busy to travel D . take less physical activity
    (3) From the passage, we can infer that         .
A . children should receive a better education B . some children don't bike or walk because there are fewer safe sidewalks C . it is unnecessary for children to walk to school D . children in country areas have more chance to bike or walk than those in cities
    (4) What section of a newspaper may this passage be taken from?
    A .  Education. B . Culture. C . Sports. D . Health.

Having lived in California until 1970, my family has felt a number of earthquakes. We have been fortunate, however, to have suffered no bodily harm or property damage.

There is a website that lists all California earthquakes recorded from 1769 to the present. The site lists the dates and times as well as the magnitude(震级) and the exact location of any quake that measured more than 6. 0. There are only a few quakes that stand out in my memory and, luckily, none is shown in the website. So, my personal experience with earthquakes might be considered insignificant.

There are three earthquakes that are difficult to forget. The first one was in 1955 and our oldest daughter was walking with me in our backyard in Redwood City in California. As the shaking became stronger I held her to me with one arm as I held on to one of our fruit trees with the other. All three of us (my daughter, I and the tree) shook for two or three minutes that to us felt like hours.

The second one was in 1963. Our entire family was visiting Disneyland in Southern California. The earth started to shake just as we were beginning to walk from our hotel toward the famous landmark.

My third experience with an earthquake was a lonely one in California. It was in my sixties and I was alone in an old church. As the building started to shake, I quickly headed for the door to go outside. I remember I said a little prayer—something like, "Help me get out of here in time, Dear Heavenly Father". Minutes later, I was safe outside.

    (1) What massage does the passage mainly tell us?
A . A new film about an earthquake B . The survival of an earthquake C . Three earthquake experiences D . The rescue of children in an earthquake
    (2) The earthquakes the author has experienced         .
A . all caused bodily harm B . are all recorded in a website C . all measured more than 6. 0 D . all happened in California
    (3) When the first earthquake happened, the author         .
A . was staying with his daughter B . was planting fruit trees C . held on to a tree for hours D . was in a hotel
    (4) What does the underlined part "the famous landmark" refer to?
    A . A church. B . Disneyland. C . A building destroyed by an earthquake. D . The place where the author was born.

Some people don't know whether to learn American English or British English. Here is my answer to it.

It's really, really hard to pick up a native-sounding accent if you learn English as an adult. Children pick up accents very quickly, but adults don't. Even after speaking English every day for twenty or thirty years, you'll probably keep a bit of a foreign accent. I've met many English learners who've lived abroad for several years in an English-speaking country. For the most part, I can't tell what country they've lived in unless they tell me.

Since it's so hard to learn an accent, you probably shouldn't spend a lot of time trying to guide yours to one accent or the other. There are better ways to use your time, like learning new vocabulary or phrases.

Even if you are able to get an American or British accent, it won't make much difference. That's because English speakers are used to hearing different accents. Americans hear British accents on TV and movies. And we all hear accents from other countries: Russian accents, Korean accents, French accents, and so on. Usually, British people like the way that Americans sound, and Americans like the way that British people sound. So you're OK either way.

So just pick whatever language is most convenient for you. If you have friends or teachers from America, you should probably learn American English. If you have British friends or coworkers, maybe it's better to learn British English.

It's probably easiest to stick with just one kind. However, there's nothing wrong with mixing a bit of British and American English together. It won't hurt you!

    (1) The author mentions English learners in Paragraph 2 to show         .
A . it's hard to speak like native speakers B . the author isn't good at telling accents C . people don't like speaking with an accent D . people like to live abroad to learn a language
    (2) What does the author think English learners should do?
A . Choose a special country to live in. B . Make use of time to learn new words. C . Tell the differences between accents. D . Learn British accents through movies.
    (3) Paragraph 4 mainly shows that         .
A . there are many accents in the world B . which accent to learn isn't that important C . American and British accents aren't very different D . Americans and British people understand each other
    (4) The author thinks mixing some British and American English together is         .
    A . okay B . necessary C . wrong D . dangerous

How to Make Friends at a New School

Starting with a new school can be difficult. Everything seems to be different, and you don't even know where to go for your own classes. However, if you use these skills, you can quickly turn some of those strangers into friends.

    Be yourself

If some people don't accept you, they're not the kind of friends you need. People often stay together because they have similar interests. For example, someone who does a lot of sports may make friends with those who also run or swim a lot.

Remember to be nice to the people you meet at your new school. If you think that you will say something that may make them feel sad, do not say anything and just nod your head if they talk to you. Also, remember to be as helpful as possible!

    Believe in yourself

A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don't keep your eyes on the floor. Raise your head and make eye contact with other people. Introduce yourself. Tell them your name and where you're from.

    Remember people's names

You like it when people use your name, and so do other people. Besides, ask them in a kind way if they have a nickname. You'd be surprised how often this may come in handy.

    A. Be friendly to others.

    B. Making new friends can be hard, too.

    C. Join after-school activities you like.

    D. Never change what you are to try and fit in.

    E. If you see someone you know, smile or say "Hi".

    F. People may become angry if you just begin by saying "Hey" each time.

    G. Don't sit at the back of the classroom where other people don't notice you!

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.

The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?"

"Oh, yes… but I don't have money on me…" she replied.

"That's nothing. I'll treat you today," said the man. "Come in."

The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.

"What is it?" asked the man kindly.

"Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped her tears. "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!!"

Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?"

Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered mother's familiar face and weathered hands. "Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me."

On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.
