One Thursday afternoon, when I was in Grade 7, a new boy came into my classroom. He was short and thin. He walked up to the teacher and told her, very seriously, that he was new. His name was Christian. He sat down, took a look at me, and then looked away. I didn't think he was very nice and I was sure he wasn't the type I would like to become friends with.

During that year, I didn't talk to him much, but he smiled at me when our eyes met, always shyly. He never ate lunch with anybody, and he never talked to anybody but me.

But one day I joined those unkind kids who were making fun of him. We made fun of him though I thought it was wrong. 

"Haven't you got any friends? " a kid asked Christian, who had walked past us alone, head down.  "No, he hasn't got any friends. He's too stupid and shy. " I said. Then Christian looked up at me with the saddest dog eyes I had ever seen. I felt very sorry at that moment.

That night, I couldn't sleep because I couldn't get Christian's face out of my mind. In the weeks that followed, he never met my eyes in class and never smiled at me. It was really hard for me to decide to write him a note asking him to forgive（原谅）me. But I thought I should. 

The next day in class, I wrote him a note telling him how sorry I felt. About five minutes later, I turned and saw tears in his eyes. "You will never realize (意识到) what your apology（道歉）has meant to me, Jimmy, "he said to me. "I hope we can become friends. "

We had lunch together that noon and we had the best talk I had ever had. Over the years at high school, we were close friends.

When I think back, I realize that, if I had not apologized, I would never have known what a lovely person Christian was.

Apologies can really change your life, so never miss the chance to tell somebody you are sorry.

Mr. Taylor loves fishing. It is his favorite sport. He often fishes for hours without catching anything. But this doesn't get in the way {#blank#}1{#/blank#} his hobby. He still likes sitting by the river {#blank#}2{#/blank#} ( patient) day by day.

Some {#blank#}3{#/blank#} ( fisherman) can't catch fish, either. Sometimes they just catch dirty old shoes and rubbish. Unluckily, Mr. Taylor is even {#blank#}4{#/blank#} ( bad) than them. He never catches anything, not even old shoes. One day, after he spent the whole morning fishing by the river, he went home again with {#blank#}5{#/blank#} empty bag.

" You must stop fishing!" His friends laughed at him and said," It's a waste of time."

{#blank#}6{#/blank#}, Mr. Taylor didn't get mad." But they don't realize one important thing. I am only interested in {#blank#}7{#/blank#}( sit) in a boat or by the river. We are supposed {#blank#}8{#/blank#} ( value) the sunshine and fresh air when we get close to the nature. It can make me {#blank#}9{#/blank#}( forget) the noise of the city for some time." He said to {#blank#}10{#/blank#} ( he).

The oil- paper umbrella has a history of over 1, 000 years in China. There are different s{#blank#}1{#/blank#} about it. The most popular one is about Lu Ban. 

When Lu Ban and his younger sister visited the West Lake, it started raining suddenly. They agreed to have a competition. They should i{#blank#}2{#/blank#} something for people to go out on rainy days. 

Lu Ban spent the whole night building ten pavilions（凉亭）near the lake. The next morning, however, when Lu Ban was p{#blank#}3{#/blank#} of his achievements, his sister held something unusual in her hand. It could be opened into a round shape. It was light and beautiful, so people could carry it e{#blank#}4{#/blank#} wherever they went. 

Lu Ban said, "You've solved the problem wisely, so you w{#blank#}5{#/blank#} the competition. " Then the umbrella was made and it received a lot of praise from people. 

Later, people used much cheaper paper instead of silk, cutting the cost of umbrellas. People also brushed tung oil（桐油）across the surface to make them strong. 

My best friend is Lisa. She is also my cousin.

 We often hang out together. On Saturdays, l always go to the library with her. We read books and do our homework there. She studies {#blank#}1{#/blank#} than me so she often helps me with my homework. Lisa often helps to bring out the best in me {#blank#}2{#/blank#} I am becoming better and better. And I. am better {#blank#}3{#/blank#} sports. so I often teach her to play tennis after finishing homework. And we go to the movies once a month. As for me, hanging out with friends is not only at lot of fun because her jokes can make me laugh {#blank#}4{#/blank#} but also helps me keep friendship. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} time together helps us stay close.

 For example, I {#blank#}6{#/blank#} to do anything interesting with her last summer vacation. So we went to {#blank#}7{#/blank#} friend's farm in the countryside. {#blank#}8{#/blank#} was great. We fed some{#blank#}9{#/blank#} and saw some baby pigs. They were so cute. She taught me how to take care of them. Still no one seemed to be bored as we get enough health y food and took quite a few photos there.

 As the saying goes, a true friend {#blank#}10{#/blank#} for your hand and touches your heart. I know she cares about me and I wish we are good friends forever.

Patricia Casquinho is a 15- year- old girl. She was born in Portugal, but lived in Germany for years before she finally went to study in the US as an exchange student(交换生). What made Patricia interested in studying in America?

"I love watching American movies about teenagers. I come here to experience the high school life," Patricia said. However, her life in the US was not easy at first." It was hard to get used to so many different things here. But talking with my new friends made it much easier. They helped me a lot," said Patricia.

 During her stay, Patricia noticed some differences between the schools in the US and Germany." In Germany, we don't have many exams like SATs or SOLs. We just have final exams. Also, there is a difference in the school timetable. The school day in Germany is shorter. Students usually start later and finish earlier. Besides, American students often take classes with different students from different grades. We don't do that in Germany. And we don't have school sports teams either," Patricia shared.

"I've played sports games on the school sports team since I came here. This is really my favorite experience in the US. And I will share my life here when I go back home," she said.
