It was late and there weren't many people on the street. l guessed a lot of people were probably asleep. But I was on the way home from my office. 

There was a man riding his bike behind me. I didn't think anything of it until I turned off the highway to go home and he turned off too. Then I turned into another street and he followed me again. 

I was starting to feel a bit afraid especially when I turned into my own street and he followed me there too, I parked my bike in front of my house and he stopped in front of my house too. I was feeling quite scared by then, He was all dressed up in his bike clothes and I wanted to know what was going on. He came up to me and said my indicator (转向灯) wasn't working. He said that he was worried about me. He wanted to make sure 1 got to my home safely and knew about the problem so I could work it out. 1 thanked him for his kindness and he got back on his bike and rode off. 

l learnt an important lesson that day: Do not be so quick to judge (判断) a person. Maybe a person doesn't look like a good man, but he might have a heart of gold.

What do you think is an important social skill? I think it's being polite. It can help you make friends, show respect and achieve success. Here are some tips to help you be polite. 

Greet people politely. You can be polite by offering a proper greeting. When first meeting or greeting someone, give him a warm smile. It shows that you are in good spirits and are happy to see him. Also, shake hands to show respect. 

Make small talks. Instead of jumping right into business. You can make small talks first. Talk about their lunch or their day. Listen carefully and pay attention to what they are saying to you. Show them you're interested by asking questions. 

Congratulate other people on their success. When others do well, offer them your praise. If you meet a friend who has recently graduated, won a match, or got a new job, congratulate him. 

Avoid uncomfortable topics. Some topics can make people uncomfortable. You might hurt other people's feelings if you talk about them. Try to keep your conversation in the pleasant areas. 

Make eye contact (接触). When in conversation with someone, look them in the eye when you're speaking. Keeping eye contact shows that you are paying attention. However, don't stare at people all the time. 

A couple of months ago, I made a promise to myself. I put some money in my wallet with the purpose of giving the money to the person in trouble.

Months passed, and as my daily life got busy, I was unable to keep my promise. Whenever I opened my wallet and saw the money, it reminded me of my promise. and I would feel a little disappointed because I haven't taken action. The voice inside told me that I should do something soon.

Today, while walking to work on a busy street, I passed a blind old lady with her hand out on the corner. Seeing her aged face and sightless eyes, I stopped at once. What a poor old lady she was! All of a sudden, I remembered my promise and the money lying in my wallet. I took out the money from the wallet and bent (弯腰) down to her level. Gently, I took her hand, placed the money into it, and closed her fingers over the money so that she could feel it and understand my action. The lady nodded her head a little bit.

I felt like I had achieved something. I kept my word to help someone in need! It was really a small act but especially a meaningful one! You will never make it if you don't take the first step.
