My mother retired (退休) at the age of 55. She was bored every day and got 1 easily. Our family relations became terrible. My brother thought of a good idea to solve the problem. He bought her a new smartphone and taught her to use WeChat.

She was 2 by WeChat soon. After taking photos, she liked sharing them in her friend circle.

But she sometimes 3 . This afternoon, my mother prepared to make dumplings for dinner. She took many photos as usual. But after dinner, we didn't see any photos. Finally, my father asked her, "Why don't you share your delicious dumplings in your friend circle today?" My mother looked 4 and said, "My smartphone was boiled in the pot." "Oh, my God! I have to buy a new one again!" 5 cried.

Many of our conversations are gossip(闲话).I have noticed three effects of gossip: it can hurt people; it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction; and it can cause social pressure in a group.

An important negative(负面的）effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic that a person prefers to keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.

If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it? The answer lies in another effect of gossip. Sharing the latest rumor (传言) can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don't. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the "in group". In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority (优越感). 

Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. For example, if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can be sure that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The dos and don'ts carried through gossip will never show up in any student handbook.

Next time you feel the urge (冲动) to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your "juicy story" might have.

 Last month, Shenzhen launched its first smart cat adoption(领养) center in Bao' an District in July. The center is a 6- square- meter room with a glass door. It makes it easier for people to adopt street cats. Through this center, two cats have already found new homes.

 People who rescue street cats can apply to bring them to the center. If the staff think the cats are suitable to stay, there's a daily fee of 20 yu an to take care of the cats' health 24 hours a day. The fee can be paid by the rescuer or raised by the public.

 People who might want to adopt a cat can enter the center by scanning(扫描)a QR code and paying 10 yuan. Visitors also need to put on shoe covers before going in. Inside, visitors can find basic information about the cats and how to adopt the cats. There's also a smart feeding machine where visitors can buy food for the cats. And it doesn't cost anything to adopt a cat.

 Many people like the center for protecting street cats, especially in winter. However, some citizens worry that the cats might be harmed by cat haters. The staff explained that they will monitor the center all the time, and they can lock the doors through remote control if needed. Serious problems will be reported to the police at once. The center allows up to three visitors at a time, and children must be with a parent.

 More smart cat adoption centers are planned for Nanshan and Bao' an districts. With the adoption centers, over 10 pet- themed parks, and 50 pet- friendly malls, Shenzhen is on its way to becoming a" pet- friendly city".

Natural disasters are sudden events that usually bring terrible results. People may lose their homes, money and even lives during the disasters. We have recently found that natural disasters sometimes happen. So we decided to find out some famous natural disasters around the world.

Mr. Stevens walked around the class handing out math books. Then he returned to the front of the class and looked at us. We stared (盯着看) back. "What are you waiting for? Get started!" he said. 

We looked at him, confused (困惑的). A student asked, "Mr. Stevens, aren't you going to teach us first?" Mr. Stevens replied, "You're smart kids. Open the book and get to it. If you have any questions, raise your hand, and I'll come to help you."

My friend Paul and I opened our books to the first page. A competition began. Paul and I spent all our free time at home working through the lessons. Mr. Stevens, true to his word, helped anyone who had a problem. It was not a normal way of teaching but it worked well. Paul and I worked like dogs and finished two and one half math books that first year. 

It was a turning point in my life. Mr. Stevens made me realize I was good at math and that I was able to reach the top of any class I attended. I kept learning that way all through my high school and university. 

I've carried Mr. Stevens' lesson with me all my life. Whenever I am faced with a new challenge, I think of the first math class of my junior high school. Instead of sitting around, I just get started. Then before I know it, the challenge has been dealt with.
