The world has got 24 time zones(区域). That's one for every hour of the day. When you get up in the morning, it's time for people on the other side of the world to go to bed. 

China is a large country. It has special cultures with a very long history. 

Chinese food plays {#blank#}1{#/blank#} important role for Chinese families. Chinese people eat their meals with chopsticks. One of the main foods {#blank#}2{#/blank#} （be） rice. Tea is a favorite drink. 

Chinese calendar is different from the one in {#blank#}3{#/blank#} （west） countries. New Year's Day is in late winter. It is also called the Spring Festival. And it also has some special {#blank#}4{#/blank#}（tradition） cultures. For example，sweeping the floor {#blank#}5{#/blank#}New year's Day sweeps away all the old year's bad {#blank#}6{#/blank#} （lucky）. 

The Chinese zodiac，known as Sheng Xiao，follows a twelve-year cycle. Each year is {#blank#}7{#/blank#}（name） after an animal. For example，the year that begins in 2022 is the year of the tiger. 

Chinese is a little difficult language. Chinese writing {#blank#}8{#/blank#} （develop） for over 4，000 years. It has thousands of characters. A character stands for a word and also a {#blank#}9{#/blank#} （mean）. Besides Putonghua，Chinese people speak some other {#blank#}10{#/blank#}（form） of the language，and there are many kinds of dialects （方言）. 

This was our last trip before high school. I had been looking forward to it for weeks. But at the roller coaster, my stomach felt too tight to say anything at all.

The big girl beside us was Tasha, my best friend Dan's sister. We came here in her car. She was a singer. She was fantastic on the stage. Just the image of her up there made me think she was so cool.

Our roller coaster car pulled up, and my friends rushed forward, I felt my legs couldn't move. All I could think about was the roller coaster might fly off into the sky. Without a word, I turned, ran out of the line. I knew what people were saying about me, but I didn't care. I just kept moving past the crowd, found a bench near the bathrooms to sit down and put my head in my hands.

"Hey! Steve! Are you okay?" I looked up. It was Tasha!

"Oh, uh, yeah, I just started feeling, um, sick." I responded.

"You know, it's okay if you were scared. Everyone gets scared." She said.

"You don't." I said in a low voice. "I've seen you on that stage. You were fearless."

"I'm glad it looks like I'm not scared!" Tasha smiled. "But that's not true. I get really scared and nervous before I perform."

Before I noticed she was on the bench by my side, her words moved on.

"Hey, look, singing is important to me. And I want to share what I love with my people. So, even if I'm scared. I do it anyway. I push through the fear and just get up and do it. Is taking roller coaster important to you? "

"Yeah, it is. And I want to be able to look back and remember having fun with my friends. I don't want to remember running away and sitting alone by the bathrooms."

"Everyone gets scared, but brave people don't let fear control them." She looked into my eyes. Still being lost in what she said, I saw my friends coming towards me.

I got up and went with them to the coaster.

When we were leaving, Tasha took a photo of my big smile in front of the coaster. I put it on my door. It stayed there through all four years of my high school, a reminder* of what was more important to me than fear.

In my classroom last Thursday, I sat next to a girl who was coughing. I covered my mouth to protect myself from the cold. However, the moment (时刻) I got home, I knew those germs (细菌) had got to me. I had a headache. My mum took my temperature. Sure enough, I had a fever. I was asked to drink as much water as I could. My dad asked me to stay at home until I got better. I was feeling down because I had a science test the next day, and I didn't want to miss it.

The next day, my dad took me to the doctor's. The doctor said I had the flu. He advised me to get a lot of rest and take some medicine. While at home last Friday, I slept most of the day. When I woke up, I tried to study for my science test. However, I couldn't stay awake long enough to study. At that moment, resting was more important than studying.

After being home from school for four days, I finally felt better and returned to school. My teacher, Mrs. Jenkins, gave me the science test I had missed earlier. She sent me into another classroom to finish it. The science test was much too difficult for me, but at least I was feeling healthy enough to take it. Great!

Carnival( 狂 欢 节 ) does not take place only in Louisiana. There are many celebrations around the world. 

In Brazil, the celebration goes on from the Saturday before Mardi Gras(大斋节前的最后一天)to Mardi Gras Day, but in some Brazilian cities the celebration can last seven or eight days. Just like New Orleans, not many important things are decided in Brazil from New Year's Day to Mardi Gras Day because everyone is preparing for or celebrating carnival. Most Brazilian parades have a topic, which could be political or historical. The parades had to have a topic tied to Brazil until 1996. Some cities in Brazil do not have a street carnival, but they might have an indoor party. 

Bolivia has carnival parades( 游 行 )for children and then more parades for adults. The children dress up in costumes and walk in the streets. The adults make traditional dance groups and dance in the streets. But the main part of Bolivia's carnival is getting wet. Almost everyone gets wet from water balloons and water buckets. In Oruru, Bolivia, their carnival is held in the last ten days of the carnival season. People there join in dancing, but their main carnival event is a ceremonial parade that lasts for twenty hours and parades for four kilometers. Over 20, 000 dancers are involved as well as 10, 000 musicians. This parade attracts at least 400, 000 people. 

The carnival in Venice, Italy is often regarded as the most carefully prepared carnival and lasts ten days before Lent( 大斋节). Many events are held in the canals including shows, concerts, dances and water processions. The official ending to the celebration is the party held in St. Mark's Square. 

"You pretty, he ugly(丑陋). You swan(天鹅), he frog(青蛙)!" Foreign people just love this funny English sentence(句子) going around the Chinese Internet.

It all started when a foreign girl named Kris posted a sad photo online. It looked like her boyfriend made her cry. Some nice Chinese people tried to cheer her up. They asked her to find someone better. Some made funny Chinglish to make her feel happy, such as "You swan, he frog." This became a hit with foreigners. Many found it cool. After learning that it came from the famous old Chinese story of the beautiful swan and the ugly toad(癞蛤蟆), they shared it a lot online and made funny pictures with it.

In the past, people often corrected(纠正) those who spoke Chinglish because it was full of grammar errors(语法错误). However, with globalization(全球化), people from different countries can now share their ideas more often. Different styles of speaking English are becoming common. For example, the well-known "add oil" has now appeared in the Oxford dictionary and people use it widely. The expression(表达) shows Chinese culture.

"Once I understood the full meaning, it became much funnier," said Cody, a young man from New Zealand, when asked about "you swan, he frog". "It's great that more Chinese culture is being shared with the rest of the world," he told China Daily.
