It was a beautiful day with a clear, blue sky and a soft wind. Everything was quiet and the book in my hands was lovely until I felt my chair 1 . I noticed the little round table moving. At that moment, I thought to myself, "It is an earthquake." I was 2 as I ran to tell my parents. But when I reached them, the earthquake stopped. 

Nothing happened in the next few hours. My family and I were not 3 and our house was still standing. We watched the news about the 4 . The epicenter (震中) was very close to Hualien. We felt very 5 to be far away from it. After we watched the situation in Hualien on TV, I decided to volunteer to help those people right away. 

I arrived in Hualien county with a few other volunteers. We tried to 6 the people there. After hours of 7 , we found a few people who were lucky to be alive. We 8 sent for doctors to make sure that they were all right. When they met their families, they cried for 9 . That made me happy. However, not everyone had a happy ending. We also found 10 of those not making it through the earthquake. And I felt terrible when I saw the tears of the people crying for those dead people.

What do you usually do on weekends? Last Saturday, I helped my {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(亲戚) in his garden, a place that always makes me happy. The garden was a bit messy, so we {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(决定) to clean it up. Next to the big oak tree in the {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(中心的) part of the garden, we planted new flowers to make it look nicer.

We worked {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(耐心地), digging, watering, and trimming(修剪). We felt the {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(温暖) of the sun on our backs as we worked. Each task needed {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(注意), and we tried to do everything {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(正确地). As time went by, we got a bit {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(累的), so we took breaks under the tree and enjoyed the quiet.

At one point, a friendly {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(陌生人) came by and asked how to get to a nearby park. I smiled, stood up, and gave him {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(方向). By the end of the day, the garden looked great, and I felt really proud of what we had done.

Students learn their lessons in class. They sit in the classroom and listen to their teachers. This is a common（常见的） way of learning. 

Is this the only way for students to learn something? Of course not. There is another way to learn—you can teach yourself. For example, if you cannot remember what you learn at school when you are doing your homework, what can you do? You can look at your books. This is a way to teach yourself, and it is not a difficult thing. You can do this at any place and at any time. 

How do you teach yourself? First，you must read. Read something you want to read, or you have to read. Second, you must ask yourself questions. The questions are something you don't understand or you want to know about. You can write down these questions. A clever student is also good at asking questions. Third, you must answer the questions yourself by thinking hard, by reading books and sometimes by asking other people. These are the ways of teaching yourself. If you work like this for a long time, you are sure to be more successful（成功的） in your study. 

Hello, everyone. Because of the high rate of school violence (暴力), teenagers' safety (安全) becomes a serious problem. We are planning to set up an organization named School Watch to make sure that students have a safe school environment. Please be part of our plan!

What is School Watch? School Watch is a volunteer organization in our school. It helps us stop violence. It will keep yourself and your schoolmates safe. The other members of School Watch care for you and your classroom. And you do the same for them.

Is it for everyone? Anybody can become a member of School Watch because everyone has something to offer.

What else can it do? School Watch makes it possible for us not only to help each other but also to make friends with each other. Some members may offer to help schoolmates who have problems with their homework.

Who is the Best School Watcher? Our school will look for the Best School Watcher and give him or her lots of prizes. You could be the one.
