It was a cold, rainy day. My father and I drove to a hill. It was dangerous to make a two-hour trip along the highway in such weather. I didn't want to go, but my father asked me to go to see something at the top of the hill. 

After driving for a long time, we stopped the car at the foot of the hill and got out. Walking along a path, we turned at a corner. When we got to the top of the hill, I saw many flowers there, like a carpet（地毯）before us. 

A lot of questions came to my mind. Who planted these beautiful flowers? How? When?

As we went on, we saw a sign with words on it, "Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking. "

The first answer was, "One Woman—Two Hands, Two Feet, and Very Little Brain". The second was, "One at a Time". The third, "Started in 1973. "

On our way home, I was so shocked by what we had seen. The woman changed the world. One bulb（一株） at a time. She started about 50 years ago. It might be just the start of an idea, but she kept at it. I thought to myself, "If I had a dream and worked hard on it, just a little every day, what could I get?" And then, I told my father, "I will start tomorrow. "

My father looked at me smiling. "____ !" he said.

My name is Michelle. It is a great pleasure to write to you. I like reading your books Harry Potter. A few days ago，I listened to a radio program about you. Now I know you were born in England and you are now living with your husband and children in Scotland. I also know that you taught English at home and in other countries before you started writing books. The radio program said that you could write only when your baby daughter fell asleep，so you worked on the first book for five years. That was really a difficult job. But you have already finished writing seven Harry Potter books. That's great!Your son David，your daughters Jessica and Mackenzie must be proud of you. Of all five books I have read，I love the second one best because I find it easier to understand. It brings me anew world where I can enjoy the adventures with Harry and his friends. I hope I can become a writer like you when I grow up. Thank you for spending time reading my letter.

Now pets play an important part in our life. More and more people keep pets in their families.

I have a dog called Huanhuan. She is really cute and friendly. She always brings happiness to my family. We all love her very much and we take her as our family member. When we have breakfast, she likes to jump to my mother's legs to ask for the food she likes. When we watch TV at night, she likes to sit on the sofa with us. When I am sad, she can do some funny things to make me laugh. When I make fun of her, she plays with me happily. Every morning, she always goes to do morning exercises with us. Now we can't be without her.

 We get lots of happiness from Huanhuan, but keeping pets needs time and money. So if you want to have a pet, you must spend time looking after it and you should be patient with it!

How much do you know about terraces (梯田) in China? Imagine mountains are in silver (银色) water, shining in the spring sun.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} During autumn, these same mountains are gold, and in winter they are covered with white frost (霜冻 ). These are the amazing colours of the Longji Rice Terraces. 

It was hard to build these terraces for the local Zhuang and Yao people in Guangxi.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Reaching as far as the eye can see, these terraces cover tall mountains, often from the bottom to the very top. 

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} First, building the terraces meant that they could have more fields to grow rice. Second, the flat (平坦的) terraces catch the rainwater and stop the soil from being washed away. 

People have worked in harmony (和谐) with nature to make these terraces. The terraces have hundreds of waterways (河渠). During the rainy season, rainwater along these waterways moves down the mountains and into the terraces.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} This forms clouds and then rain falls down onto the mountain terraces once again. 

Though modern technology could help produce more crops (庄稼), these terraces still mean a lot to the local people. For them, traditions have too much value (价值). 

I'm Mike. I am a junior high school student. Junior high is different from primary school. These differences help us grow and learn new things. My parents help me a lot during this time.

 In junior high, we have more subjects. This means I need to plan my time well. In primary school, my teacher told me what to do. Now, I have to make my timetable for study. At first, this was not easy for me. However, my parents help me by showing me how to create(创造) a timetable. They teach me to turn big task into small ones, then work on them one after another. It's useful.

 Making new friends is another part of growing up. In junior high, I meet many new people. Sometimes,I feel shy about talking to them. My parents tell me to be brave(勇敢的). They also tell me I can join clubs. Because it's easier for us to make friends with others through clubs.

 The challenges in junior high also teach us important lessons. For example, when I face problems, I must learn to be patient (耐心的) and work hard. My parents tell me that it is OK to make mistakes because I can learn from them.

 Thanks to my parents, I believe I can work out any problems in junior high and grow as a better man.

17-year-old Girl Rides to School

Kacey Tucker, a 17-year-old girl, comes from Saudi Arabia. The girl rides her horse to school every day.

"My family has two horses, Jacob and Donald." she says, "My sister, Melissa and I often ride them to school."

After finishing all her middle school classes in Saudi Arabia, Kacey 

goes to a university (大学) in America now." My cousin's university has a really clean and big barn （畜棚）," says Kacey, " And I'm very happy to study there."

Kacey gets another horse, Winston in America. And she rides the horse to and from the university every day.

"That's so cool. I'd like a horse, too!" one of Kacey's classmates says.
