Do you know anything about the Suspended Building of Tujia Nationality (土家族吊脚楼). There are many houses of this kind in Hubei. Usually they have two floors. On the first floor, there are no rooms for people because it is for pigs, cows, chickens, ducks, sheep, dogs and so on. Tujia people always put the firewood (木柴) on the first floor, too. And they use it to cook. People live on the second floor. The living room is in the center of the house. It is very big. It is for dinner and meeting friends. There are some bedrooms next to the living room. The kitchen and the bathroom are usually at the back of the house.

But now, many young people don't want to live there. Some of the Suspended Buildings are very old. The government (政府) are trying to keep them well, because they are the colorful culture (文化) of Tujia Nationality.

A horse fair was an interesting place. There were young horses and many beautiful horses from the country. But there were also a lot of poor and thin horses.

At the horse fair there was a man with a gentle voice and kind grey eyes. He offered 23 pounds for me, but the salesman refused. Then a man with a very loud voice came. I was afraid he was going to buy me, but he walked away. Then the grey-eyed man came back again and said, "I'll give you 24 pounds to buy him."

"Done," said the salesman. "He's an excellent horse and if you want him for cab (出租马车) work, he can help you earn more than you pay for him. The horse is well worth the price."

Half an hour later we set off for London, along country roads, until we came to that great city. There were streets to the right, and streets to the left. We went into one of the small streets, and then into a very narrow street, with small and old houses.

My owner stopped at a house. The door opened, and a woman, a little girl and a boy came out.

"Is he gentle, Dad?"

"Yes, Dolly, as gentle as a little cat. And you can pat him."

Dolly, the little girl, patted my shoulder without fear. It felt so good! They led me into a comfortable, clean room, and after a delicious meal I lay down to sleep, thinking "I'm going to be very happy here".

My new owner's name was Jerry. His wife was called Polly and they had two children, Harry and Dolly. The next morning they came to see me. I loved it when they patted me and spoke in gentle voices.

"Let's call him ‘Jack', after the old horse, shall we, Harry?" said Dolly.

"Yes, sounds great!" said Harry.

The first week of my life as Jack, the London cab horse, was very hard. The noise, the people and the traffic on the streets scared me. But Jerry was a very good driver, and that helped me a lot. Jerry soon found that I was ready to work hard and do my best, and he didn't whip (鞭打) me.

He kept me very clean, and gave me as much food as I wanted. But the best thing was that I had Sundays off.

Restaurants around the world only used lots of plastic straws (塑料吸管) before, but many of them start using paper ones now. Are paper straws really better than plastic straws?

A plastic straw usually takes more than 200 years to break down (分解). It slowly turns into small pieces of plastic. If they fall into the sea, seabirds and fish will eat them for food. It is bad for their health and may kill them. Paper straws are different. They start to break down in just three days. They are much safer and better for animals and Earth.

However, some people still don't like paper straws. They think paper straws will affect (影响) the taste of the drink. In fact, we can use other things. For example, glass straws are easy to clean. And we can use them for a long time. We can also use real straws. Many people started to use them in the 1800s.

We are happy to say that there's a trip to Apple Farm for all the children in Class 2. The trip is on Wednesday. On this trip, your children learn about farm life and have great fun in the open air (野外). 

There are lots of animals on the farm. In the morning, the children can feed (喂) the hens and the ducks. They can also see the cows, and sheep. The farmer, Mr. James, has a tractor(拖拉机). At about 2 o'clock, the children can take a ride (搭乘). This is always very popular. 

We are traveling by school bus. The bus goes at 9 o'clock, so please don't be late. Please bring lunch boxes and drinks. Also bring boots, as the farm can be muddy (泥泞的). The sun is big, so bring a sun hat, too. We will be back to school at about 4:00 p.m.
