Artificial intelligence(AI) can now do amazing things. ChatGPT is an AI that can answer questions, tell stories, and do much more. But it's very" thirsty", said a new study.

When ChatGPT works, its" home"- data(数据) centers around the world- gets very hot. Workers then have to use water to cool them down. Cold water goes into pipes(管道) near the computers at these centers. Because the computers are very hot, the water turns into vapor(水蒸气) and goes into the air. The water needs to be super clean. If they use sea water, it can eat away the pipes.

If you ask ChatGPT 20 to 50 questions, it needs to" drink"a 500- milliliter bottle of water. When people trained ChatGPT, it used 700,000 liters of water, said the study. This is the amount that is needed to make about 370 cars.

ChatGPT is not the only one that needs data centers. Everything you do on the internet needs data centers to work. There are more than 8,000 data centers in the world, said a report in 2021. The number is still growing. If AI keeps using a lot of water, we may have to" fight" with AI for water.

Jokes made by AI lack(缺乏)creative thinking. It seems you can ask artificial intelligence (AI)programs anything, and they'll give you an answer. So, can they tell jokes?This question was raised by a UK comedian(喜剧演员)Karen Hobbs in one of her shows in June. Instead of the usual jokes she created, Hobbs told jokes written by ChatGPT. 

When Hobbs asked ChatGPT for a joke, it gave one about a man joking about getting bored with his shopping-obsessed(痴迷于购物的)girlfriend. Even when she asked to tell it from a woman's perspective(视角), it was still a shopping-obsessed girlfriend but told in the first person

It's no surprise that many jokes by AI come from a man's perspective, as men are much more common in comedy. The BBC said that AI storytelling can only create stories based on what is already there

A good joke in real life can always change based on the audience's reaction(反应). This is a skill that often leads comedians to improvise(v. 即兴创作). That's something that AI can't do for now. 

For example, in improvise(n. 即兴创作), comedians don't make preparations. They depend only on their natural reaction to the audience. 

However, that could change. Research is being done to give Al a greater understanding of the world around it, which makes the future of AI jokes still uncertain. 

Theo works days, nights, and weekends in the tulip, fields in the Netherlands and never feels tired. How is this possible? Theo is an AI robot that looks fo sick flowers each spring. 

The work stops viruses（病毒）from spreading among the plants. The robot looks for troubled tulip bulbs（鳞茎） and kills them if necessary. They are removed （去除） from the healthy ones，in a processing center after the harvest. 

There are 45 robots like Theo working in the tulip fields of the Netherlands. Their job becomes important as the winter turns to spring and the busiest season nears. People come from around the world to see the colorful flowers. 

This is the second season that Allan Visser has used a robot. He said it is very costly-the same as sports car-about $200, 000. In the past, knowledgeable farmers would walk the fields looking for tulips that showed signs of sickness. "I prefer to have the robot because a sports car doesn't take out thesick tulips from our field, " he said "Yeah, it is expensive, but there are fewer and fewer people who can really see the sick tulips. 

Erik de Jong, the manager of the company that makes the robots, said all of the knowledge they use in the computer program comes from tulip farmers—farmers like Theo van der Vourt. He is the farmer after whom the robot is named. 

Van der Vourt retired（退休）after 52 years of looking for sick flowers in his fields. ＂It＇s fantastic＂he said, "It sees just as much as I see. "

In the world that we are creating very quickly, there might be some new kinds of jobs in the future. Robots will become more common in our homes and schools, so we' ll need people who know {#blank#}1{#/blank#} to fix them. These workers will be like robot doctors. They will {#blank#}2{#/blank#} what's wrong with a robot and help it get better. As AI(人工智能) is developing {#blank#}3{#/blank#} , we' ll need people to check that it works properly. We call these people AI rule keepers. They will make sure that AI will do something {#blank#}4{#/blank#} to humans.

 The best way to get ready for these future jobs is to be open to new {#blank#}5{#/blank#} and never stop learning. Knowledge is important, and problem solving skills will be needed for our future education and work.

Facial-recognition cameras are everywhere — even in your smartphone. Many people use this technology to unlock their phones, open doors, or make quick payments. But there is a problem during the epidemic(流行病）: everyone wears masks. What a headache!

Scientists are trying to solve this problem. For example, E&T Magazine reports that Hanvon, a tech company in Beijing, has made a new system. It can recognize（辨认） over 95％ of people when they wear masks. 

What's the secret? It's all about your eyes. Marios Savvides from Carnegie Mellon University studies facial-recognition. As we get older, he says, our faces change shape. But the area around our eyes stays almost the same — even if we put on weight. As long as there are enough data from the area of our eyes, the cameras can recognize us. 

TECH5 is another facial-recognition company. The Swiss company's products scan（扫描） the shape of your face. They also scan your irises, which are the colored parts of your eyes. TECH5 hopes to ignore（忽略） all of the face below the nose. 

This kind of software has a more important use than just unlocking your phone. "It can discover criminals, even when they wear masks, " said Huang Lei from Hanvon. Hanvon's technology is used by Chinese police in places like subway stations and airports. Similar technology is used by the United States Air Force. 

Huang pointed out one big weakness: it fails when people wear both a mask and sunglasses. "In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost, " Huang said. 

The world's oldest known musical instruments are more than 40,000 years old. For tens of thousands of years, humans have been making music for pleasure and to express themselves. Recently, there has been a rise in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create music. Some AI music has become so popular online. The technology has been used by lots of musicians. Some people think that using AI to produce music isn't creative enough because it just makes songs out of old music. What do you think? Is AI bad for new music?

Using AI might be cheaper than paying a musician. If companies can use AI to produce popular music that makes lots of money from people buying and listening to it, it could put musicians like me out of work. If musicians can't earn money from music, there will be far fewer of them creating new songs. Anyway, listening to music that was made by a computer isn't the same experience as listening to human-made music.

When I create songs, I put different feelings and real experiences into my work, creating songs that connect with people at a deep level. Songs produced by AI aren't original because the computer just makes music from the old one. AI music isn't completely creative.

No—AI can produce new ideas, says Mary

I'm a music lover. When I turn on my radio or headphones and a great new song comes on, it makes me feel good. Wonderful music brings people together to sing and dance. If people are enjoying music, does it matter whether it was made by a human or a machine?

I think music makers can use computers, which help to perfect sound and mix different layers of a song. For them, AI is just another new technology, a tool that they can use to express ideas. It won't replace musicians but they can work with it. Building on AI music could save them time. It could allow much more music to be produced and it could lead to new and special style s of music. AI could create exciting music that humans could never have dreamed of.
