Our family had lived in Los Angeles for two weeks. "LA is not a bad place, Sonny." Dad said. But I didn't like the city. I missed* Michigan. I missed my old friends and even the trees there.

That afternoon, I went out to find a basketball court*. Dad said there was one around, but it was twenty-minutes' walk away! When I got there, I saw three children playing some kind of one-on-one*. Two of them were taller than me, and one was about my size.

The short boy played well, but the other two were too tall for him. One-on-one wasn't his game. He needed someone to pass to. I went down to the other basket and played alone. Then I heard someone calling me. It was the short boy.

"I'm Louie. Are you coming to join us? Small against* tall."

"Sounds good." I thought for some time. "I'm Sonny."

Louie introduced the other two boys. They were Chuck and David. We nodded to each other and started the game. Like I said, Louie really was a good player. He just needed someone to pass to. Soon, Chuck and David found    ▲   . The score was always close. Both teams had to try our best. In the end, Louie and I didn't win the game, but we made it interesting.

A little later, I saw Dad come. I said goodbye to them.

"Coming back tomorrow?" asked Louie.

"Yeah."

The sun was going down behind pink and orange clouds. On the way back home, Dad said, "Who said Los Angeles doesn't have great sunsets*?"

"LA is not a bad place." I said. Now, it could be home.

Most of us spend all day at school or work. After a long and busy day, all we want to do is to return to a comfortable home. Smart technology can turn any home into a nicer place to live in.

Smart homes have been around for some time. A company called Pico Electronics invented a type of technology called X10 in 1975. As the curliest smart home technology, it allows household devices (家用设备)，such as lights and alarms, to communicate with each other by using radio waves.

Of course, 5G network connectivity has made smart homes much more complicated (复杂的) than X10. Perhaps the most popular smart home technology is the voice-activated assistant. Users are allowed to communicate with almost any device in their homes simply by speaking a few words. This is especially convenient for children and people with disabilities, as the devices can help them finish tasks that would normally be too difficult.

Common household devices can become "smart as well. For example, smart fridges can create dinner recipes with the vegetables that are being kept inside.

But smart homes are not just about convenience. They are also good for the environment. By regularly checking your energy use and automatically (自动地) turning off lights and other devices that you' re using, smart homes can lower much electricity you use. Using less energy means that we use fewer natural resources (自然资源)，which is good for the environment.

Chinese chess，also known as Xiangqi，is a traditional game in China. It is a 2﹣player game played on a board. It is believed that Xiangqi first appeared in the Warring States Period（战国时期）， p{#blank#}1{#/blank#}of people like playing Xiangqi. 

Chinese chess is played with "red" and "black" pieces. The two players take turns，and the player holding the red pieces goes first. Both players need to be c{#blank#}2{#/blank#}to make one move each time. In the end，one player will b{#blank#}3{#/blank#}the other. 

Xiangqi is both an educational game and a part of Chinese culture. The ways to play it show the wisdom of Chinese people. T{#blank#}4{#/blank#}playing Xiangqi is challenging，players can improve their minds and thinking skills. Therefore，some adults{#blank#}5{#/blank#}that students should try playing Xiangqi. 

My son, Kevin, loved wrestling (摔跤运动) as he was growing up. When he entered high school, he showed a lot of athletic ability. Even as a freshman wrestler, we could see the hope of his future, and he went on to improve each year. As a senior, he'd become the leader of a team that set an unbelievable record. Just as we expected, he went into the state tournament (锦标赛). 

Then he won four matches and ranked number one. Here we were, in the finals of the state tournament, ready to win our championship—we still didn't have a state championship when his high school career was over. 

Unluckily, his last match didn't go well! I felt terrible, and I was unwilling to accept what had just happened and unable to believe it. I painfully watched Kevin as he shook hands with his opponent (对手) and stood calmly as the judge raised his opponent's hand in victory. Then he quietly walked out of the gym. 

A few weeks later, I received a letter from Kevin's school. In the letter, the principal praised Kevin's devotion to his team, his respect to his opponents and his spirit of competition. After I read this, I cried. 

For years, I had watched every single match where Kevin had wrestled in high school, but I hadn't noticed all the outstanding qualities that his principal (校长) mentioned. I always focused on the wins. And when he didn't get that final win, I was especially hurt and disappointed. I'd failed to realize that Kevin was working hard to achieve victories, but always performing with character no matter whether he won or lost. 

At that moment, my son became my mentor (导师). He taught me that winners in life appreciate the pursuit more than the victory itself. 

There are many ways to help improve your health like eating healthy food. Taking exercise and getting medical help. But the easiest and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule is that the younger you are，the longer sleep you need. But regardless of（不管）age，some people need to sleep more while for some a few hours is enough. 

 ① .  According to the World Health Organization over half the people in the world may be sleep﹣deprived(睡眠不足的). Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100, 000 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problems such as high blood pressure. 

 ② . Why are so many people sleep-deprived? Part of the reasons may be cultural. In the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are usually seen as "lazy". Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don't have much time to sleep. They only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep，the more work you'll do. 

 ③ . How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep? Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr. James Maas, an expert in sleep. He says, "Sleep is like a credit （信用卡） card. When you sleep less, you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back. The more hours you don't sleep, the more hours you should sleep to 'pay back' the hours on your 'sleep credit card. '"

 ④ . For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person once said. " Don't think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish idea which is held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to do more. "
