Up to 65% of children don't get as much sleep as they should do, and this can make them nervous and slower at school, scientists say.

So how long should young people sleep each night? The answer is between eight and ten hours. If you don't get enough sleep at night, you'll have less energy the next day.

But the scientists say many children have missed out on 4, 500 hours of sleep by the time they are seven years old. They say that children miss sleep because they have TVs and computers in their rooms, and busy parents don't read to their younger children at night any more. The traditional "bedtime story" helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully. Children with TVs and computers in their bedrooms were more likely to sleep badly, and to get less than eight hours' sleep. Even losing one hour's sleep a night can mean that children do less well at school.

German scientists think that your brain(大脑) keeps working while you are asleep. To show that they were right, they gave two groups of people a problem to work out. One group went to sleep, and the other group stayed awake. The result? The people who slept worked out the answer more quickly. This showed that their brains had been trying to find the answer while the people were asleep. So, make sure you get enough sleep tonight, and you'll be at your best tonight, and you'll be at your best tomorrow!

A student walks into the teacher's office with his heavy schoolbag slowly and looks worried. "What's happening?" the teacher asks. He tells a lot of small things that make him really unhappy. Then the teacher stops working and decides to do something to help the little boy.

He asks the student to get a glass of water and some salt* from a box. The teacher asks the student to put the salt into the glass of water and drink it.

"How does it taste*?"the teacher asks.

"It doesn't taste good."the student answers.

The teacher doesn't say anything else, but asks the student to get the same amount* of salt and go with the teacher to a nearby lake.

"Put the salt into the lake,"the teacher says. The student does what the teacher says.

"Now, taste the water from the lake,"the teacher says.

The student gets some water from the lake with his hands and tastes, the teacher asks,"How does it taste?"

"Fresh and a bit sweet,"the student answers quickly.

"Do you taste the salt?"the teacher asks.

"No,"the student shakes his head.

The teacher sits beside the student,"The pain* of life is just like salt—no more, no less.

However, how salty it tastes depends* on the container* you put the pain in."

"How do you feel now?"asks the teacher.

The student looks at the teacher with a big smile. He feels much better now.

"Thank you for giving me such a lesson. I think I will never forget the taste of them and learn to be a lake."

China successfully launched the Shenzhou-18 manned spaceship to send three astaurants to Tiangong space station for a six-month task at 8:59 pm on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.

With the help of a Long March-2F carrier rocket, the spaceship blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center successfully. The Shenzhou-18 crew members are Ye Guangfu (September, 1980), from Chengdu, Li Cong (October,1989) from Handan and Li Guangsu (July, 1987) from Xuzhou , with Ye who used to be a crew member during the Shenzhou-13 mission from October 2021 to April 2022 , as the task leader. But it is Li Cong and Li Guangsu's first space flight. The main purposes for the task include orbit handover(轨道移交) with Shenzhou 17 crew and carrying out a series of experiments and tasks during their stay of six months

The three Shenzhou-18 spaceship astronauts have entered the country's space station and met with another astronaut group on Friday, starting a new round of in-orbit crew handover The Shenzhou-17 crew opened the hatch(舱门) at 5:04 a. m. (Beijing Time) and greeted the new arrivals And they took group pictures.

According to the China Manned Space Agency, the six astronauts will live and work together for about 5 days to complete planned tasks and work." The new crew will carry out more than 90 experiments in the fields of basic physics, space science, space life science, space medicine and space technology", said Lin Xiqiang, deputy director of the CMSA, at Wednesday's press conference.

A special task for the Shenzhou-18 astronauts is to create an "fish tank" and raise zebrafish in zero gravity to study how the space environment affects their growth and system balance. The "fish tank" can hold four small fish. But if the experiment succeeds, it will be a significant breakthrough to cultivate vertebrates in China's space program. The next step in our research includes experiments on fruit flies and mice," said Cang Huaixing, a chief researcher for the space station's scientific experiments.

China will also try its best to push the research on foreign astronauts and space tourists in space station flights.

Reading for pleasure (消遣) is the easiest way to become a better reader in English. It is also the most important way.

Some students say they don't want to read for pleasure. They say they want to use their time to learn the rules of the language and new words. They say that pleasure reading is too busy.

Many experts (专家) say that pleasure reading is very important for learning English. Dr. Stephen Krashen, a famous expert on learning languages, says that pleasure reading helps you learn many important things about English. Students learn more grammar and more words when they read for pleasure. They also learn more about good writing.

Dr. Krashen tells us that pleasure reading helps each student in a different way. Each student needs to learn something different. Pleasure reading makes it possible for each student to learn what he or she needs.

Reading for pleasure is not the same as studying. When you read for pleasure, you choose your own books, and you don't have to remember everything. There are no tests on your pleasure reading books. Pleasure reading will help you:

•learn how English speakers use English

•read faster in English

•find examples of good writing in English

•learn new words

•learn about the culture of English speakers

 阅读下面语篇,从每题所给的A、B、C三个选项中,选出最佳项。

These days, if you want to travel from New York to Beijing, the flight will take about 16 hours. You also have to wait at the airport, and sometimes you have to transfer onto a different airplane. If you add up all of the time, the trip will take at last 20 hours. But in the future, the trip from New York to Beijing might only take two hours.

Right now, a company is developing (开发) something called ET3—"evacuated tube (真空管) transport technology". Here's how it works. A tube goes all the way from New York to Beijing. The tube is only a few meters wide. Capsules (舱) move through the tube. Six people can sit in one capsule.

For international travel, the capsules can travel at about 6,500 kilometers per hour. Why can they travel so fast? Because there isn't any air in the ET3 tubes, the capsules can move at such a high speed. Also, the capsules are quite light. Each only weighs 183 kilograms. There are other advantages (优点) of ET3. Because it use electricity, it's quite clean. Also, it's a lot quieter than air planes and cars. Last, ET3 tube and capsules don't need much building materials.

Of course, there are still some problems about ET3. The biggest problem is that right now it would cost a lot to build ET3. To lower the cost, we will need much better technology.

However, it's still exciting to think of how ET3 will change the travel in the future. Who knows? Maybe someday you can have lunch in New York and dinner in Beijing.

 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

The holiday is the season to be joyful. However, many people feel sad or worried during or after holidays. When such feeling is connected only with holidays and doesn't happen at other times of the year, it's often called holiday blues(忧郁).

____This can be a result of money problems, extra activities, and stress around holidays. People can also have holiday blues for terrible relationships with family and being alone during the holidays. Much traffic jam around holidays can cause holiday blues, too.

Holiday blues can have you feeling like hiding instead of celebrating. They can also lead thinking patters(方式) that aren't helpful. For example, if you angrily shout at your kids, then you may think you're the worst mom. If you can't make cookies this year, you will think you're just not as nice as you used to be. If you make efforts to make money, you may feel you'll never be rich. So we shouldn't think little of holiday blues.

There are some very simple and useful ways to help people to deal with holiday blues. Start new traditions to your family. Don't be too hard on yourself. Take some time to volunteer. Take some time to take a bike ride, a relaxing walk, etc. Don't eat too much food — overeating can make your body sick and uncomfortable.

But if you have unshakable sadness or terribly hate eating, you may need to see a doctor. Let him check your degree of sadness or worries. Talking to someone may also help you feel better. But at other times you require medical treatment. Thus, you can shake the blues off and get back to the things about your life you do enjoy.
