It was a cold snowy morning after the winter vacation. And it was my first day at my new school. I was walking alone slowly and worrying about lots of things. It was early and there weren't many people on the road. Suddenly a girl who was riding a bike on ice fell down. She was trying hard to get up but fell again. Without thinking, 1 went over and helped her. She said" thank you" with a smile and then rode away. Her words warmed me a lot.

    Finally, I got to school. The teacher led me to the classroom and introduced me to the class. Then he asked me to sit down beside a girl. I felt so nervous that I didn't dare to look at her. Soon the first class, English, started. Their textbooks were different from those in my old school. As I was wondering what to do, an English book appeared in front of me. "Let's share," the girl beside me said. "Hi, I'm Carrie." I looked up. It was the girl I helped this morning. Later on, we became good friends.

    From that I learned: To help others is actually to help ourselves!

Holidays are not necessarily for fun or rest. Doing something meaningful can also get special pleasure. When the final bell rang, the 1 were reminded that there was no school on Monday —Labor Day.

Kayla was excited about the news. She loved breaks. She wanted to go out to play with her friends. When the school bus 2 Kayla off, she ran into the house and told her mother happily,"Mom, I am excited about no school on Monday."

Kayla slept in the next morning. Saturday was her 3 day of the week. She could enjoy playing video games all day. On Sunday, her friends came 4 and they played basketball for several hours.

Then it was Labor Day — the extra(额外的) day off that Kayla was looking forward to. But her dad 5 Kayla early that morning. He told Kayla that in honor of Labor Day, the family would be cleaning both inside and outside the house. Kayla couldn't believe it. As Kayla wiped (擦) her eyes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad 6 .

When she sat down at the kitchen table, Kayla asked her parents, "Are you 7 about working today? Isn't Labor Day a holiday?"

"Yes, Kayla. It is,"replied her dad,"but your mom and I thought working hard today would make 8 know why Labor Day was celebrated in the first place."

At first, she was against the plan from the bottom of her heart, but she had no 9 . First, Kayla was arranged(安排) to wash the breakfast dishes. After that, she was asked to give their dog a bath. It was a hard 10 and needed a lot of tiring, careful and patient work. So she slowly got down to the work with great unwillingness(不情愿).

11 things began to change as she was doing. 12 the dog, she found it was a lot of fun with so many soap bubbles (气泡). In no time, she got the work done with great 13 .

When they finished all the work, Kayla enjoyed 14 in her tree house, drinking the lemonade. "Does Labor Day make the lemonade taste even more 15 ?"Kayla thought. What a meaningful day it was!

A cold winter night, a girl quarreled (争吵) with her mother, then ran out of the house. When she went through a noodle shop, she suddenly felt very hungry.

The seller saw her standing there and asked, "Hey, little girl, you want to eat a bowl?"

"But... but I do not carry money..."she shyly replied to the man.

"Okay, I'll treat you. Come in. I will cook you a bowl."

A few minutes later, the seller brought her a bowl of noodles. After eating some pieces, the girl cried.

"What is it?" he asked.

"Nothing. I am just touched by your kindness!" she said with tears. "Even a stranger on the street gives me a bowl of noodles. But my mother, after a quarrel, she is not a good mother!!"

"Girl, why did you think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you felt that way. Your mother has been taking care of you since you were born. Why were you not grateful (感激的) and why did you hurt your mom?"

The girl was really surprised after hearing that. "Thanks, I got it."

Dear Mike,

How is everything? I am not happy these days. My parents are angry with me because they think I live an unhealthy life on weekends. They want me to spend my weekend like my sister Jenny.

I always get up late. So I usually have nothing for breakfast. I play basketball for an hour then. For lunch, I often eat out. Hamburgers and ice-cream are my favorites. I know they are not good for me, but they taste great. After lunch, I usually go to the movies with my friends. Sometimes, I sleep all the afternoon. In the evening, I either watch TV or play computer games. I don't go to bed until eleven thirty.

But Jenny is different. She never gets up after six thirty. Then she brushes teeth and does morning exercises. After that, she has milk and eggs. She does her homework all the morning. For lunch, she eats rice, meat, fish and vegetables. She studies for 3 hours before she eats dinner. Sometimes, she helps with housework after dinner. Then she goes out to take a walk. She reads and takes a shower before going to bed."What a great day I have!"Jenny always says.

It is weekend! I just want to relax myself well. I don't like to hear my parents always say the same words again and again to me. It's terrible to live like Jenny! What can I do?
