According to a new American study, having dinner with children may help to reduce (减少) the number of problems that develop in parent—child communication. The1was done among about 5, 000 middle school students in Chicago public schools.

    The students were studied at the beginning and the end of the sixth grade and again at the end of the seventh and the eighth grade. They were asked2they ate dinner with their parents. They were 3 asked how often their parents had a conversation(谈话)with them that lasted more than 104, praised(表扬) them when they did well, asked them where they were going and asked how they were doing in school. The study5the more parent—child communication, the6problems between them.

    Family meals are a good opportunity to7in touch with children, said Jayne Fulkerson, a member of the study team. "You can get to know8going on in their life better."

    However, Fulkerson also suggested that parents9suitable(合适的) topics(话题). Topics10grades and homework are not good choice.

A rich man and a poor tailor(裁缝) lived in the same house. The rich man lived upstairs and the tailor lived downstairs. The tailor liked to sing when he made clothes. He sang one song after another. But the rich man liked to sleep a lot, and the singing disturbed him.

As summer comes around, outdoor activities are getting more and more popular. One of {#blank#}1{#/blank#} is bike riding, or biking. The biking craze (热潮) is now sweeping through China.

Wang Jing is a student from Hangzhou. She {#blank#}2{#/blank#} exercised before because she didn't like sports much. But since her hometown hosted the Asian Games in 2023, her interest in sports has {#blank#}3{#/blank#} a lot. She has realized the benefits of sports {#blank#}4{#/blank#} is now a big fan of biking.

"I feel free and peaceful {#blank#}5{#/blank#} I ride," Wang said. "Biking allows me to experience the beauty along the road and the world seems to slow down," she added. Wang is only one of those who are deeply in love with biking. In {#blank#}6{#/blank#} like Chengdu and Beijing, thousands of people have started to join in the biking craze.

Will the craze in China last for a long time? The {#blank#}7{#/blank#} is "Yes." Thanks to the craze, there have been events like group rides and bike festivals. These create a sense of community {#blank#}8{#/blank#} bikers. They share road information, biking experience and sometimes even meals. They are just like a{#blank#}9{#/blank#} family. As biking has become a lifestyle, experts {#blank#}10{#/blank#} that this biking craze will continue. They expect a sharp increase in the number of bike riders.

Have you ever wondered how many ants there are on the earth? Scientists at the University of Hong Kong certainly have. In a new study, they estimated (估计) the number of the world's ants is about 20, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000(20 with 15 zeroes!

That means for every human, there are nearly 2. 5 million ants. If you put all the ants on a scale, they'd weigh more than all the wild birds and mammals (哺乳动物) on the earth. 

How did they count such a big number? In the past, many scientists have counted ants in different areas. They collected fallen leaves and earth and dried them to force the ants to come out for counting. Based on 465 studies that cover the whole land, the new study made the estimation. According to Wang Runxi, one of the authors, the number and distribution(分布) of ants can be valuable to show the environmental changes. 

"Ants play an important role in the ecosystem, " Wang told Science and Technology Daily. "They help loosen the soil, spread seeds, break down things and form a part of the food chain (食物链). They are everywhere on the earth except for the coldest places. "

"Compared with big animals, little ants are more sensitive (敏 感 的 ) to environmental changes, " Wang added. Most ants live in tropical (热带的) and subtropical(亚热带的) areas. But in recent years, ants have been moving toward the two poles because of global warming. Changes in forests, such as too many trees being cut down, also have influence on the number of ants, the study showed. 

"Our global map of ants allows us to better understand and predict ants' responses to worrying environmental changes, " scientists wrote in the study. 

There is some good news for the students at Yangguang Middle School. Our school  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(ask) students about their hobbies last week. And based on these results(基于这些结果), we have set up four interest groups. 

The first one is a collecting group. Most of the students like collecting things. For example, some students are interested in collecting {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(fan). Some students enjoy collecting money from different countries, like US {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(dollar). In this group, students can collect different things they like, and they can hold some activities to show their collections. 

Sports group is {#blank#}4{#/blank#} second. Many students like doing sports. That's {#blank#}5{#/blank#} it can help them stay fit. Students can play many ball games in this group. And they can also learn how{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(swim) and take part in some sports competitions. 

The cooking group is also interesting. Some students enjoy cooking, and they think cooking {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(bring) them joy. Some students want to make some dishes {#blank#}8{#/blank#} presents for their family. In this group, students can learn to cook different kinds of dishes, including(包括) cookies, noodles and soups. 

The last one is the reading group. Some students like reading books. They think reading gives them many {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(value) things and makes them improve a lot. Students can read any book{#blank#}10{#/blank#} their student cards in this group. 

These are four interest groups. We also plan to set up more groups in the future.
