I was ten years old when my mother died. Ten years old on that very day, my mother organized a party for me at the hospital. She made sure everyone there brought me presents. 

Nurse Ms. Louise gave me a fountain pen. "Now you can write beautiful stories, Katie," She said. Then the twins in the same room gave me a pink diary. A little too cute for me. I mean, I read Stephen King, the novelist and wanted to write like him. There was one box they held out till the end. It was a large box, carefully wrapped (包裹) with exquisite paper and ribbons. "Who's it from?" I asked. 

"It's you," Mama mouthed, hard breathing, but she smiled a very small smile at me. I read her lips. She meant it was a present for me. 

"Of course, it is," I said happily. 

I took off the paper carefully. It was a beautiful box made of heavy cardboard. Then I opened it slowly and...

"It's empty," I said. "Is this a joke?" I turned to ask Mama, but she was gone, no breath. 

"Mama!" I cried. I screamed. 

I cried steadily for a week at night, and for about a year, I stopped writing and reading. I felt empty and angry. 

One night, I woke up remembering how she had said, "It's you." Not, "It's for you," just "It's you." Mama had been a writer herself. She didn't use words carelessly. But, why? 

I took the box out and opened it. It was as empty as the day I had put it away. 

 "It's you," I whispered to the box. Suddenly I knew. 

I was the box, solid and strong, maybe even beautiful on the outside. But I had to fill up the box to make it all it could be. I had to fill me up as well. 

Then ____. The first thing I put on paper was about that birthday. I kept it in the box, and pretty soon that box was overflowing with stories. And poems. And memories. 

And so was I.

A businessman found he couldn't sleep at night, because he often slept a lot during the day. He became so worried, so he went to see a doctor.

"Can you help me, Doctor?" he asked the doctor worriedly "I sleep little I can only sleep less than two hours at night."

The doctor looked over the businessman, asked him some questions and gave him some medicine. Then he asked him to work less hard. The doctor said he was sure that he was not seriously ill and he would be better soon. The businessman went back home with the medicine,

Instead of feeling better, the businessman felt worse. He slept even less than before. After a long talk with the businessman, the doctor found out the reason: the businessman's wife gave him the sleeping medicine in the morning, and that kept him awake at night!

Studying too much?

Most people work or study from Monday to Friday. The weekend is usually a time of rest. But today's Chinese teenagers can hardly rest during the weekends. 

According to a survey, 24% of the Grade 8 students in Beijing have classes at the weekend. Over 40% of the middle school students have less than eight hours' sleep each night because of study. 

And this doesn't happen only in Beijing. Ji Chunying is a Grade 9 student in Guangzhou. The 14-year-old girl has to get up at 6:45am on Saturday. Then she has classes all the day. On Sunday, she goes to extra(额外)classes for math and physics. But Ji doesn't complain. She says her classmates all work very hard. 

Finding time to have fun

Zhao Ming, 13, is from Zhenjiang, Guangdong. Zhao's weekend is less busy. But he still spends Saturday in school. On Sunday, after finishing homework, he plays basketball. "I feel happy because I still have time to do the things I like. " he said. Some students are much luckier. Ding Yi, a grade 8 student from Laiwu, Shandong, is one of them. During the weekend, Ding usually gets up at 8:00a. m. . Then she spends some time doing homework. After that she is free to go shopping or watch TV. "My teacher says I don't need to push myself too much. " Learning well at school is enough, " Ding said. "I feel pretty lucky. "

Do you like to go to the library? If you are lucky, you may meet a pig there. Her name is Daisy II. The pig star travels to different libraries for story hours. She helps teach children that reading is fun. 

Everything started in 1995. That year, Mr. and Mrs. Minor got a pet pig called Daisy. Daisy loved different people. She even did a Kiss­ A ­Pig event. People paid to give Daisy a kiss and later the Minors gave the money to children in need. A librarian (图书管理员) saw Daisy at the event. It gave her a good idea. She invited (邀请) Daisy to the library for story hours. Mr. Minor accepted the invitation. 

Daisy became popular soon. Children loved seeing her in the library. More and more libraries invited Daisy for story hours. Mr. Minor gave up his job. He and Daisy started traveling around the country together. 

In 2009, Daisy died of old age. Daisy II took over the show. Now, Mr. Minor travels with Daisy II. "I did over 300 shows last year, " Mr. Minor says. He plans to do more this year. "Meeting Daisy makes kids want to read more about pigs, " he says. "Then they may decide to read something else. "
