Many cultures in the world tell stories about dragons. In some cultures they are good and in some they are bad. No matter good or bad, in the stories they are always 1 and have supernatural power. Some people say that there used to be real dragons, but most agree that they were imaginary creatures (生物).
Dragons in China and other Asian countries are usually said to be 2. People say that they bring strength, good luck, and health. In ancient China, the dragon was a 3 of the Chinese emperors. Some Chinese people believe that dragons live under water most of the time. Unlike European dragons, they do not have wings, and they 4 using magic. The Dragon person can't make great achievements in life 6 he or she knows how to make the best use of his or her energy, intelligence, and talent.

After that, we went on down the river. It was very dark that night and it wasn't easy to see where we were going. Suddenly, a big steamboat came at us very fast, and the next minute it was right over us. Jim and I jumped off the raft (木筏) into the water. The boat hit the raft and went on up the river.
When I came up out of the water, I couldn't see Jim anywhere. I called out his name again and again, but there was no answer. “He's dead!” I thought. Slowly, I swam to the side of the river and got out. I saw that I was near a big old wooden house. Suddenly a lot of very angry dogs jumped out at me. They made a terrible noise and someone called from the house, “Who's there?”
“George Jackson,” I answered quickly. “I've fallen off a river boat.”
Well, the people who lived in that house were very kind, and they took me in and gave me some new clothes and a good meal. I told them that my family were all dead, so they said I could stay with them as long as I wanted. It was a beautiful house and the food was good there, so I stayed.
A few days later one of the slaves in the house came to me and said, “Come with me!” Together, we went down to some trees by the river. “In there!” he said and went away.
On the ground, I found a man, asleep. It was Jim! I was really pleased to see him. When the steamboat hit the raft, Jim told me, the raft didn't break up. Jim swam after it and caught it. Then he began to look for me.
We decided to leave at once. It's all right living in a house for a little while, but you feel more free and easy and comfortable on a raft.
The Internet, mobile phones and Ipads are part of our lives now. Technology is greatly affecting all ways of our lives, from the ways we work to the ways we play. And it even causes a number of social problems such as cloning humans.
We have had lots of technology and it has changed our lives a lot. There is no doubt that humans will continue to use more and more technology. Here are some examples of modern technology that will change our ideas and will affect our lives greatly.
Global positioning system(GPS)(全球定位系统)
It's a system that uses radio signals from satellites to show exact(精确的) information. It tells you where the user is on the earth in all weather conditions. It's made up of three parts: satellites, control equipments(设备) on land and receivers.
Space Technology
Russian and American scientists have worked together for the international Space Station(ISS) for a long time. They hope the ISS will provide a long-lasting lab. Such a lab will bring humans limitless(无限的) advantages. It's even hoped that one day spare technology will take humans to their new houses in space.
Underwater Robot
Hercules is a kind of underwater robot with some high technology equipments. It will be used to search for ancient ships which were destroyed into the deep sea during their journey long ago.
The world is changing so quickly that it's hard for us to catch up with all the new inventions because they seem to come out every month. It's important for us to learn about new technology and the role that it plays in our lives. So we should be willing to accept modern technology, or we will fall behind the times.

Language changes all the time. New words and phrases appear and develop. The words and pronunciations used by young people in the UK can be very different to those used by adults. Living in a multicultural (多元文化的) society has an effect on language, especially on young people, whose friends are often from a mix of backgrounds. TV and music also have big influence on the language of the young. Often UK singers sing in American accents (口音) without realizing.
Young British people use lots of language that you usually can't find in most dictionaries. These informal words and expressions are known as ‘slang'. It is not possible to make a complete list of modern British slang. By the time the list was finished, it would be out of date! New words come and go like fashions. However, here are a few examples:
Ø Safe, sorted, sound, cool or wicked all mean "That's good" or "I understand".
Ø Instead of using different tag questions like … isn't it? can't you? or don't they?, people use innit.
Ø Instead of saying very, really or completely, people use well.
Ø Whatever means I don't care.
Ø ‘He's fine' or ‘He's fit' both mean ‘He's good-looking'. Fine and fit can describe a boy or a girl.
Not everybody uses slang and not everybody likes it. A school in Sheffield, in the north of England, recently stopped its pupils using slang words such as hiya (hello), cheers and ta (both mean thank you). The head teacher says that if young people learn to speak ‘correctly' this will help them get a place at university and a good job.
When British people use language like this, it's no surprise that some students say they can't understand native (本土的) speakers. But perhaps learners don't need to worry about communicating with native speakers so much. Research shows that most of the English spoken in the world today is spoken between non-native speakers of the language. In fact, when we think about "International English", there is no such thing as a native or non-native speaker.
— But the teacher says we can't leave until we've finished.
— . I'm going.

A: Hey, try this! It took me two hours to buy the cheesecake.
B: Why two hours? The store is only one block away from your place.
A: I know! But the line was terribly long, and a man behind me was trying to . So it took me some time to "take care of" him.
B: You him?
A: Please! I'm a friendly lady! I just talked to him, well, maybe a little loudly. And … I used some words that were a little . When I was "talking" to the man, I lost my place in line. So I had to wait all over again!
B: It was really , huh?
A: It WAS! So why don't you try some?
B: Well, , I'm a little sick of it. It is too sweet.
Beijing has many charms. It is a perfect place to start exploring(探索) the wonders of the whole country. A four-day tour is possible to cover the greatest sights and enough to make you love the Chinese capital.
Day 1
Any visit to Beijing is incomplete without a walk on the Great Wall. Most people choose to visit Badaling, but Juyong Pass is less crowded but more wonderful. There are many locations for great photos. Also, pick a clear day to go so that your eyes can reach the beacon tower(烽火台) far away.
Day 2
All sites designed for this day run through the center of Beijing. If you don't plan your day carefully, after hours of walking you still won't finish a small part of the tour. First, start at the Temple of Heaven. Next, have lunch at Qianmen Street, enjoying the famous Peking Duck. Then, spend a whole afternoon in the Tian'anmen square, the largest city square in the whole world.
Day 3
If your feet ache after two days' sightseeing, you may want to slow down. You can visit the Capital Museum or walk along Wangfujing, the modern shopping street. If you are wondering how Beijingers used to live, you can go to the hutongs, enjoying the moments there and relaxing yourself.
Day 4
This day is designed for those with endless energy. The Summer Palace, Yuanmingyuan, the Lama Temple are all good places to go. You may want to spend the last night in Beijing in Sanlitun, the serious nightlife area and a favorite with local people and foreign friends.

When Gregor Mendel was teaching high school students, he noticed that plants had different traits (特征). For example, some pea plants were tall, w others were short. Mendel wondered why, so he decided to experiment.
He c the seeds (种子) that were produced. He planted these new seeds and waited for the r. He wondered whether the new plants would be of medium h. But all the plants that grew from the seeds were tall.
Mendel wanted to see what would h to the next generation (一代). He crossed the tall plants with each other in the same way he had experimented with the tall and short plants. When the n plants grew, three fourths of the plants were tall, and one fourth were short.
Mendel found out that a plant r a message from each of its parents, and that message is carried by the plant's genes (基因). For example, a pea plant gets a gene for tallness or shortness from one or both of its parents. Mendel a found out that some genes were stronger than others. The gene for tallness was stronger than the gene for shortness. So a plant would be t if it had one gene for tallness and one gene for shortness. But if a plant had two genes for shortness, it would be short.
Mendel had made a great d, but few understood it at that time. Mendel became famous only after his death.
