Scientists were studying sea turtles (龟) in Costa Rica. That is in Central America. One turtle had something sticking out of its nose. The turtle could not breathe. At first, the scientists thought it was a worm (虫). They pulled it out. It was a plastic straw ( 吸管). The scientists made sure the turtle was healthy. It came back into the water. The scientists posted a video of helping the turtle on the Internet. When people saw it, they were shocked. The video made Diana Lofflin start StrawFree.org. The group is in California. Its goal is to make people know the harm plastic straws take to the environment. Lofflin hopes people will find some things instead of plastic straws. "Straws are not necessary for enjoying a drink," she says. "Saying no to a plastic straw is a way to make a difference in the world."
Plastic rubbish washes into rivers and oceans when it rains. Fish and other animals eat the plastic. It can kill them. An activity toban plastic straws is growing. In California, it isn't allowed for food servers to give straws to customers who don't ask for them. Nancy Wallace works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in Washington, D.C. She says schools should refuse to use plastic. Kids must do their part, too.
One day, I walked into a stranger as he walked by me. "Oh, excuse me." I said. He replied with a smile and said, "Please excuse me, too. I wasn't watching out for you." We apologized (道歉) and went our own ways.
Later that day, when I was cooking, my daughter was standing too close to me. When I turned to reach for some milk, I nearly knocked her over. "Move out of the way." I shouted. She walked away sadly, But I didn't feel like I had to apologize to her.
While I was in bed that evening, my husband said to me, "Dealing with a stranger, you were polite, but with a daughter you love, you were unkind. Your daughter brought you some flowers that she picked herself this afternoon. You'll find them in the kitchen by the door. Have you seen the tears in her eyes?"
I quietly went and knelt (跪) down by my daughter's bed. "Honey, I am so sorry." I said, "Are these the flowers you picked for me?" She said, "I found them by the tree. I picked them because they're pretty like you. I knew you'd like them especially the blue ones." I tearfully replied, "Sweetie, I'm really sorry for the way I acted today. I shouldn't have shouted at you." "It's okay. I love you anyway." she said as she kissed me on my cheek (脸颊).
If we can be polite to strangers, why can't we be kind to the ones we love?
a. The writer shouted at the daughter. b. The husband gave the author advice.
c. Her daughter picked flowers for the writer. d. The writer apologized to the daughter.
There are many ways to help improveyour health like eating healthy food, taking exercise and getting medical help. But the easiest and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule is that the youngeryou are, the longer sleep you need. But regardless of (不管) age, some people need to sleep more while for some a few hours is enough.
The problem withsleep is that more and more people in the world are not sleeping enough. According to the World Health Organization over half the people in the world may besleep-deprived. Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100,000 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problemssuch as high blood pressure (血压).
Why are so many people sleep-deprived? Part of the reasons may be cultural. In the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are usuallvseen as "lazy".Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don't have much time to sleep, they onlysleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you'll do.
How do we teachthese people to learn the value of sleep?Perhaps they may listen tothe advice of Dr. James Maas. an expert (专家) in sleep. He says, "Sleep is like a credit (信用卡) card. When you sleep less, you are only borrowingtime. You always have to pay it back."
For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person once said. "Don'tthink you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish (愚蠢的) idea which is held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to do more."
Now students' English handwriting (书写) gets worse and worse.
That makes their teachers feel worried. Is your English handwriting beautiful? !
When you write English words or sentences, you can use paper with lines. That will make your handwriting straight. . Be sure to fill the lined space completely. And make sure these capital letters (大写字母) are written properly.
Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, just slow down a little.. If you write too quickly, it's hard for you to stop where you should, and you may make more mistakes easily.
When you hold your pencil in the correct way, writing is much better. Some kids press down really hard when they write. That makes the handwriling bad. Try to be relaxed and don't hold the pencil so hard. Let your writing appear nice and clean. If you do so, people will guess you are a student with a good habit.
Draw more pictures
. While you are drawing pictures, you need to use the skills to cuntrol (控制) your pencil better. Even though you have no chance to draw at school, you can practice by drawing at home.
Handwriting is very important. Imagine you are a famous movie star or a well-known sports player, whad do you do when your fans run up to you? Givethem your autographs (亲笔签名) , of course!
A. Hold your pencil right B. We will try to learn English well C. If not, here are four steps that really work D. Drawing can improve your handwriting E. Going slower makes your handwriting clearer F. Those lines on the paper can help you to write words in the right size |
Two months ago, when our class election (选举) started, I decided to run for class president. I enjoyed speaking in public and got along well with people, so I felt it easy to win. But I was1that people would feel bad for me if I lost.
I was busy preparing in the following week. My plan wasn't to make promises to do things I couldn't2but to show my class why I wanted to be president. I3my posters in hallways and in the classroom.
I also spent three hours writing my speech, saying that I was the one they could turn to whenever they had a problem. Since I was4 prepared, I felt that my chances of winning were strong.
However, when I gave my speech on Election Day, the response (反应) wasn't what I had5. Few people actually listened. When it was my opponent's (对手的) turn, everyone was screaming his name. His speech was short, but all to the point. By then, I realized I should have made mine shorter and clearer.
It was obvious(明显的) who would6. For the rest of the day, I felt like it was over. I wanted to just go home and cry, but I made it through.
My7was right: I didn't win.
The next day, people were still talking about the election. I just pretended (假装) not to8.
But later, things got better. People9about the election and talked to me just as they did before.
I don't regret putting time and energy into the election because I've learned that things aren't always going the way I expect. And moments of failure like this build10 —since then I've learned to face disappointment and grown stronger.
Wind power is a very clean source of energy. This is how wind power works. Wind makes windmills (风车) spin (旋转). When the windmills spin, they make electricity. Then we can use the electricity.
A lot of people think that wind power is new, but that's not true. For thousands of years, people have used wind to sail boats and move water. We still do those things today, but these days we mostly use wind power to make electricity.
Wind power is a very popular source of energy. Most people think that we should use it more and more. First of all, it's clean. Windmills don't pollute the environment at all. Second, we can use wind power forever. After all, we will always have wind. Also, wind power is cheap, and it's getting even cheaper.
A lot of people don't understand wind power very well. They believe that there are problems with wind power, but many of those problems are not real. For example, some people say that windmills are dangerous for birds. They used to be true, but it isn't true anymore. Old windmills killed birds because they spun very fast. New windmills spin slowly, and they aren't dangerous for birds.
However, there are real problems with windmills. One problem is that many people think windmills are very ugly. This is a problem for people, because windmills are often in very pretty areas. Also, wind doesn't blow all the time, so we can't use wind power all the time. Finally, windmills are noisy.
Wind power is becoming more and more common. Right now, more than 80 countries use wind power. About 2.5 percent of the world's power comes from the wind. For some countries, that number is a lot higher. Wind power gives Denmark more than 25 percent of its electricity.
Mr. Green brought his family to China and visited Yongzhou. On May 4th, 2019, they enjoyed the magic mountains there. They had a great time. They took a lot of photos on the way and then they had a picnic under a big tree. Suddenly it began to rain heavily, so they hurried to the hotel. When they got there, they couldn't find their expensive camera. They wanted to go back to look for it, but there wasn't enough time because they had to catch the plane at 20:30 that night! They didn't have dinner because they all felt sorry. To make his family happy, Mr. Green said, "Well, 让我给你们讲一个有趣的故事吧。An old man lived in a 200-meter-tall building. One day he fell down from it by accident, but he didn't hurt himself at all."
"It was a miracle(奇迹)" shouted his children. why?" "因为他住第一层!"
They all began to laugh loudly. Just at that time a policeman with a camera came in. He said a Chinese boy found it under a big tree and the boy asked him to find out the owner.
"It's really a miracle!" the Greens said happily.
