Last Friday a storm swept through two villages in the New Territories, destroying (摧毁) more than twenty families. This bad rainstorm damaged (破坏) seven houses1so that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows or broken doors. The sad2is that one person died, several people got badly hurt and took some medicine in the hospital, and a number of other people3the houses from the government because they had no money and no proper place to live. All in all, over one hundred people were homeless after the storm.
A farmer, Mr. Tan, said that the4storm began early in the morning and lasted for over an hour. "I was eating with my wife and children," he said, "When we heard a loud noise, a few minutes later our house fell down on top of us. We tried our best to5. Then I realized that one of my children was missing. He was good when I went back inside and found him,6very scared."
Mrs. Wu said that her husband had just left for work when she felt that her house was moving. She was7. However, her children fell asleep. She ran outside as soon as she heard the sound with children in her arms. "There was no time to take anything," she said, "A few minutes later, the house came down."
Now people should know the real8of the nature instead of hurting it, because we will never know what the nature will do to hurt people.
Traveling is one of the best ways for people to know different places while it's also a challenge for people to go to a new place. So travel safety (安全) is also a necessary part when traveling around. Here are some tips (建议) about how to protect yourself when you're going to have a trip. |
|
Make a plan When you don't have some friends to help make things like transportation clear, you'd better find more information about your travel place. Pick a place that's not too far from your city or with good traffic. |
Get a room Think about your hotel conditions. You may feel safer in a famous hotel. Whatever you decide, make sure to get a room for yourself before leaving home. It will be much better if it is near the subway or the bus station. |
Take fewer things Take only as many as you can easily carry by yourself—put them in one carry-on bag so that you don't need to take the risk of losing them. Leave expensive things at home. |
Communicate with others Tell your travel route (路线)—or at least where you'll be every day—to your parents and a few friends. If you're traveling abroad, make sure your cell phone has international service. |
Dear Helen,
I was so happy to have your letter. I asked so many people through the Internet about the MOOC you asked me before. MOOC is a learning website for students and adults in China to have more classes from other schools, including hundreds of Chinese and Western universities. It was so clever of you to have online classes to understand the subjects deeply.
Recently, our school asked us to take online classes. My parents and I held different ideas towards online classes and we even argued about it. In their mind, the reason why I liked to have online classes was that I wanted to play with the computer. They said that online teaching was not like face-to-face teaching, and that the less communication between teachers and students would cause no feedbacks (反馈) from students in time. Besides, learning online at home would be a worse way because students were easier to concentrate on other things instead of the classes.
However, I thought differently. I thought it was great for students to know how to deal with the learning problems online, because online teaching shared resources to all people, which cost a little at the same time. This could also bring hopes to those people who failed to afford many courses at real schools. I believed that online teaching made it come true that one could be able to study at the best place for him according to his own conditions.
Now I am so sad about this. I think my parents and I need to talk more, not just argue with each other. What should I do with the argument?
Yours,
Lexi

For those who want to make a tour to feel the real Beijing, the Hutongs and Siheyuans with a history of more than 2,000 years are the best places to visit.
Hutongs mean streets or small alleys (小巷) which are typical in Beijing. Most of the Hutongs were built during the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties (from 1271 to 1911). The center of the city of Beijing was the royal palace—the Palace Museum.
A standard Siheyuan usually includes houses on its four sides, and the house which stands at the north end and faces the south is called the "main house" or the "bright house", the ones on both sides are called "side houses". All the Siheyuans, from their size and style, remind us about a clear truth—whether they belonged to (属于) normal people or the rich. Because not only ancient palaces but also government offices, temples (寺庙) were built basically on the pattern of the Siheyuan.
In recent years, Hutongs and Siheyuans are not only kinds of architecture (建筑) , but also work as a window. We can see the change of life in Beijing is very quick through them.
