One Sunday, Malachi Bradley was searching for wild mushrooms in eastern Utah when he realized he had wandered too far from the mountain lake where he was hiking with his father and family.
The 10-year-old boy tried looking for a road to flag down a driver, but the area about 200 miles east of Salt Lake City was too remote. He remembered the survival skills his father taught him and eventually hunkered down between rocks still warm from the sun to protect himself from the weather. The remaining warmth helped him get through the cold night.
Over the nearly 30 hours he was missing in the rugged backcountry, he found river water to drink and even tried unsuccessfully to catch a fish with a spear made from a stick.
Meanwhile, dozens of search-and-rescue workers were combing the area on horses and ATVs, as well as in the air, but they couldn't spot Malachi in the wooded landscape.
Back at Paul Lake, his father, Danny Bradley, and a friend who had joined them for camping were keeping a fire burning, hoping the boy might wander back on his own. As the hours wore on, Bradley imagined his son alone in the woods and was terrified that he might be hurt.
The next day, Malachi heard a police helicopter flying overhead. He knew the searchers aboard the craft couldn't see him through the trees, so he started walking again until he found a clearing. He stayed there, briefly falling asleep, until a search plane spotted him from the air and a helicopter landed to pick him up on Aug. 24. Medical staff said he was cold and hungry but fine.
Malachi said he'll go camping again, but next time he'll stay close to other people. "I'll learn from my mistakes," he said.
Limiting kids' recreational(消遣的) screen time to less than two hours a day, along with enough sleep and physical activity, is associated with improved cognition(认知), according to a study published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health.
The study included about 4,500 US children aged 8 to 11 and measured their habits against the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth. It found that 51% of the children got the recommended(建议) nine to eleven hours of uninterrupted sleep per night, 37% met the recreational screen time limit of two hours or less per day, while 18% met the physical activity recommendation of at least 60 minutes of accumulated physical activity a day. Only 5% of the children in the study met all three recommendations; 30% met none at all.
The researchers found that as each recommendation was met by a participant, there was a positive association with global cognition, which includes memory, attention, processing speed and language. Those who met all three had the most "superior" global cognition, followed by those meeting the sleep and screen time recommendation and finally the screen time recommendation alone, according to the study.
Other organizations, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics have guidelines in place to help with the management of children's screen time. The organization suggests putting realistic rules or limits in place for how long your children are on their screens, knowing who they are talking to and what they are doing. The amount of recommended screen time depends on the age of the child. Besides, parents should also make sure to encourage physical activity and have bedroom rules such as creating "tech-free zones".
Scientists in Argentina have created the world's first cow with two human genes that will enable it to produce human-like milk.
Genetic engineering was used to introduce the "mothers' milk" genes into the animal before birth, according to the National Institute of Agribusiness Technology in Buenos Aires.
As an adult, the cloned cow "will produce milk that is similar to that of humans", which will prove "a development of great importance for the nutrition of infants(婴儿)", said the institute. "The cloned cow, named Rosita ISA, is the first in the world with two human genes that contain the proteins present in human milk," said the statement.
In April, scientists in China published details of research showing that they had created dairy cows which produced milk containing proteins found in human breast milk. But the Argentine team said the Chinese only introduced one human gene, while their research involved two, meaning the milk will more closely resemble that of humans.
"Our goal was to raise the nutrition value of cows' milk by adding two human genes, which do good to the immune system of infants," said Adrian Mutto, from the National University of General San Martín which worked with the institute.
Cristina Kirchner, President of Argentina, said that the scientific institute made all Argentines proud. She also said that she had refused the "honour" of having the cow named after her. "They came to tell me that the name is Cristina, but what woman would like to have a cow named after her? It appeared to me to be more proper to call it Rosita."
Any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is thrown into the water, with you trapped inside, is absolutely terrifying. However, most deaths result from panic, without a plan or understanding what is happening to the car in the water. By adopting a brace(支撑) position, acting decisively and getting out fast, you can save yourself from a sinking vehicle.
Brace yourself for impact. As soon as you're aware that you're going off the road and into a body of water, adopt a brace position. The impact could set off the airbag system in your vehicle, so you should place both hands on the steering wheel in the "ten and two" position.
Undo your seat belt. Untie the children, starting with the oldest first. Forget the cellphone call. Your car isn't going to wait for you to make the call.
Leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the window. A car's electrical system should work for up to three minutes in water, so try the method of opening it electronically first. Many people don't think about the window as an escape option either because of panic or misinformation about doors and sinking.
Break the window. If you aren't able to open the window, or it only opens halfway, you'll need to break it with an object or your foot. It may feel counter-intuitive (与正常预期相反的) to let water into the car.
Escape when the car has equalized. If it has reached the dramatic stage where the car cabin has been filled with water and it has become balanced, you must move quickly and effectively to ensure your survival. While there is still air in the car, take slow, deep breaths and focus on what you're doing.
A. Open the window as soon as you hit the water.
B. Surviving a sinking car is not as difficult as you think.
C. It takes 60 to 120 seconds for a car to fill up with water usually.
D. Such accidents are particularly dangerous to the risk of drowning.
E. In conclusion, if you know what to do in the water, you will be safe.
F. This is the first thing to attend to, yet it often gets forgotten in the panic.
G. But the sooner the window is open, the sooner you can escape directly through it.
Love is blind: the magic of Tabby
In October, 2003, I started my work at my local animal shelter's Adoption Department. Over the years, more than 50,000 animals have 1 the doors of the shelter. Most of them, I do not remember. But occasionally there are 2 animals, who touch me so deeply that I could never possibly 3 them. Tabby was one such animal.
Tabby, blind and deaf, was probably 14 years old. So her chances at adoption seemed 4 at best. After all, we didn't have many adopters coming in 5, "Can you show me all of your really old dogs who are also 6?" We had all thought that Tabby would live out the rest of her life at the 7.
One day a woman named Loretta came to the shelter. Her son, Gary, had 8 Tabby's pictures and stories on the shelter's website at home. They were interested in meeting her! It was the only 9 we ever received about Tabby. What could a young child possibly see in a 14-year-old dog who was both blind and deaf? Most boys would want a dog who could grow with them and 10 through grassy fields on summer days. Tabby would 11be able to do that. But after meeting her, Loretta and Gary decided that she was the right dog for their family. They adopted Tabby!
If Tabby's story had simply ended with her 12 adoption, it would still have been something very special indeed. 13, it was what happened after her adoption that people might regard as "magic". Gary 14 from epileptic seizures(癫痫发作). Since Gary and Tabby met they became 15. They did everything together. They became so "in tune" with one another that Tabby began to telegraph Gary's seizures 16they occurred, giving his family a(n) 17 that one was about to strike. What's more, Gary seemed to be having fewer and fewer seizures since Tabby's 18.
How could it be? Nobody could explain 19 Tabby did it. But those of us who were fortunate enough to know her and her family had 20 the magic, the kind that has its roots in love.
David will never forget what happened to him the day before yesterday. He (eat) something at home when he received a strange phone call from a hospital. The caller said that his son (fall) to the ground unconscious on the way to school. It was he took him to the hospital. David hung up his cellphone and rushed to his son's classroom, only to find him listening to the teacher attentively. He suddenly realized that he had been cheated, but he felt (relieve). Just at that time the phone rang again, saying, "Your son is in great danger and he needs immediate operation which costs 48,000 yuan. The doctors here say they will not operate your son until they receive the money." When (ask) from where the caller had taken his son to hospital, the caller rang off. David gave a big smile and said, "What a pity!"
If the cheater thought he could get money from David in such a(n)(honest) way, he was wrong. Such phone calls are common these days. A few of them might have fallen victims to such tricks. Most parents are sensitive to (they). It was really silly to cheat educated men like David.
Believe it or not, it's a true story. The (colleague) in his office can confirm it, such as Tom, Peter and so on.

Dear Peter,
Glad to receive your letter, and now I'll tell you something about the first aid course in our school and some suggestions about burns.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
I woke up earlier than my brother as every other day of the week. I jumped out of the bed, got dressed, brushed my teeth, and had breakfast. Saying good bye to my mother, I got in the car no later than 7:05. I got to school on time, even though my brother came out of the house late as he used to.
It was a Thursday. I was walking to the chemistry rooms when my phone in my left pocket vibrated(震动). I took it out and looked at the shiny screen. As soon as I saw my father's name on that screen I realized something was not right.
He would not call me in the middle of a school day just to talk. He would want me to focus in school and do well. I answered the phone, and my father sounded worried. He told me to find my brother as soon as possible, walk with him to the school picking-up zone and get in the car with my brother. Our driver would take us back home where my father was.
When I was in the car with my brother my dad called the driver and told him to take us to the hospital. We were going to meet him and my mum there. As soon as my brother and I found about the change in plans, we looked at each other in the eyes. I immediately noticed the fear in my brother's eyes.
To be honest, I was really scared too, probably more than he was. But I did not say anything. We arrived at the hospital. I saw my dad on the phone waiting for us at the entrance. He was smoking. Seeing my dad smoking made me more worried. I had never seen him smoke before. He hated it. As soon as he recognized the white car, he threw the cigarette away. I looked at my brother; he was looking out of the other window. I did not tell him what I just saw. I did not want him to worry.
