The UN has recognized the contributions of volunteers on Dec. 5, International Volunteer Day. Here, the four things are offered to consider before taking the leap into overseas volunteering.

    Choose your organization carefully

volunteering may be a fundraising mechanism(筹资机制)for a development project. For others, volunteering is fundamental to their programs, and those serving take on professional roles in longer-term development.

Volunteers want to help and make a difference, but most know this isn't a purely selfless act. You will learn new skills, broaden your horizons and come to better understand yourself and the world. Reflect on your motivations. You want to help reduce global poverty or protect the natural world, but what else? Have you always wanted to travel, but not as a tourist? Work with kids? When you understand your motivations, you'll be in a better position to choose the option that is right for you.

    Work alongside the local community

Often times, travelers volunteer in isolation(隔离)from the local community in which they are working in. This enables you to ensure you are committing to a project that promotes long term and sustainable change.

A volunteer trip is just the beginning

Further ignite(点燃)the global change maker in you by taking your experience one step further when you return home. Spread the message of your transformative experience to others, helping to spark the change within them.

A. And that's all OK.

B. Know why you're going.

C. Don't assume you know it all.

D. Communities always welcome volunteers.

E. Volunteer travel is a life-changing experience.

F. Some organizations require you to pay your own way, and often include a fee.

G. Make sure to travel with organizations that have strong partnerships with local communities.

Long-term saving goals are often several years or even decades away and can include saving for retirement and putting money away for a child's college education.

What is the easiest way to stay warm in the super cold?{#blank#}1{#/blank#}. At least that is what Santa Claus told me.

During Christmas, Dennis and I went to Finland. We brought back some tips for keeping warm in a cold temperature.

    ⒈There layers(层)work wonders.

Start with the base layer, which sits right on your skin: choose something that can absorb sweat{#blank#}2{#/blank#}A sweater is a good choice. The most important layer is the outer clothes, which should be waterproof(防水的)and windproof.

    ⒉{#blank#}3{#/blank#}.

You lose heat from every millimeter of uncovered skin, which was the biggest lesson I learned on this trip. My whole body was well covered. But I missed one sport: my face. So it often felt like the wind was going to blow my nose off.

    ⒊Exercise, don't just stand still.

When it's cold, exercising may be the last thing you feel like doing, but be smart.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}and you will feel the difference. When we first got to Finland, we were freezing. But after a couple of minutes jumping around, we felt less cold.

    ⒋If you have a heater

You may want to turn it all the way up, but it's best to keep it at between 18 and 20 degrees{#blank#}5{#/blank#}but not create a huge difference between inside and outside.

A. Grow a crazy beard.

B. The key is what your layer is

C. Cover every bit of your skin

D. That will keep you comfortable

E. Take a walk, faster than your normal speed

F. Don't forget to keep your hands and feet warm, too

G. The middle layer keeps your body heat from getting away

Are anger problems should also be recognized as an illness like depression and anxiety? Anger is largely viewed as a secondary emotion — one caused by other emotions. People are thought to be angry because they are sad, anxious or stressed. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Today, though, a growing number of mental health experts think that anger is a serious problem that needs its own treatment.

To tell the difference between "normal" anger and "anger problem" is difficult. After all, everyone gets really mad from time to time. Experts point out a few ways.

Disordered anger, as it is sometimes called, tends to be of greater intensity (强度). {#blank#}2{#/blank#} An example: While most people would get upset if a driver cut them off, someone with disordered anger might try to chase down the car and force it off the road.

And in cases of disordered anger, the person gets angry more frequently and his/her anger lasts longer.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} But people with anger problems often stay angry for days, weeks or even years; their feelings of anger don't disappear over time.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Disordered anger often damages people's lives. "It interferes (干扰) with people's relationships and their jobs," says Raymond Chip Tafrate, a US psychologist. "Even their health is affected."

    Anger clearly increases the risk of certain health problems, as many studies have shown. When people are angry, their hearts beat faster and their blood pressure goes up. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

Experts suggest that people with an anger problem take anger-management programs. The programs teach people to control their responses to stressful situations through the use of relaxation techniques. The programs sometimes also include life-skills training to help bring down stress and remove angry feelings.

A. Anger takes away people's joy in life.

B. Consequences are also important to consider.

C. The anger buried inside him rises to the surface.

D. For most people, angry feelings disappear quickly.

E. Over time, these changes will have bad effects on the body.

F. In the past, many doctors didn't accept the idea that anger could be a problem all on its own.

G. It takes very little to set off a person with an anger problem, and their responses are very strong.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

With the College Entrance Examination drawing near as a senior year student, you may have so many pressure coming from so many directions that you can't figure out what to do first.

    Balancing goals in life

When you have many things to do and a lot of demands on your time, you can lose sight of what's important. One of the best ways to see the big picture—{#blank#}1{#/blank#} —is to lay out your goals.

Pressure Points and How to Deal with Them

Confused or overwhelmed- talk to someone you trust. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. They may help you find solutions to your problems and worries

Being too hard on yourself - ease up, take a break and do something you enjoy. Daydream, read a book, go out with friends—anything that helps you relax.

Problems, problems, problems—recognize your limits. It's too stressful to try to deal with all your problems at once. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}.

It's important to remember that goals belong to you—not to your parents, your teachers, or your friends. After you're set your goals, identify the skills you have to achieve those goals. If you're not sure what skills you'll need, do some research. Try the library, your guidance adviser and teachers, and other people who could help you.

Goals exist to serve you. If your goal is something you no longer want, change it. Identify the barriers to getting your goals. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. Don't get depressed by a big, long-term goal—see what steps you can take to achieve it and set those steps down as short-term, “do-able” goals.

A. Goal-Setting Tips

B. Consider ways to overcome them

C. what you want out of life

D. Choose what's most urgent and set aside the rest until later

E. Discuss your concerns with a friend, parent or teacher

F. As long as you know what skill is important and what isn't

G. Too much to do

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

A. Why should you forgive?

B. How should you start to forgive?

C. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.

D. Try to see things from your offender's angle.

E. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.

F. To make your anger die away, try a simple stressmanagement technique.

G. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.

Forgiveness

To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Try the following steps:

Calm yourself. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.

Don't wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don't see things the same way. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.

Take the control away from your offender (冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who caused you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#} If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender's point of view.

Don't forget to forgive yourself. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} But it can rob you of your selfconfidence if you don't do it.
