Tu Youyou, aged 85, is a medical scientist at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. she has just become the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel prize, for helping discover artemisinin, a new kind of medicine known as "Qing-hao-su" in Chinese in 1971 and dihydroartemisinin, used also to treat malaria(疟疾).

    The discovery of "Qing-hao-su" and its use in treating malaria are regarded as the most important breakthrough(突破) in tropical medicine in the 20th century. It is also a major health improvement for people in developing tropical countries in south Asia, Africa, and South America.

    This is the first time her work has been widely recognized in China, and it also marks the first time China has won a Nobel prize in the sciences.The last time a Chinese national won a Nobel Prize was in 2012, when Mo Yan got the literature award.

    Tu also received several medical awards in the past including the 2011 Lasker Award in Clinical Medicine for the same achievements.Tu was the first native Chinese who was educated and works in China to win the Lasker award, too.

    Frank was clever, but he never liked to work hard. He often said to his friends, "If you work hard, you will make a lot of money, but it is not so good. I want easy work and a lot of money. Hans Christian Andersen(安徒生)

    Hans Christian Andersen is a great writer. He wrote many popular stories for children all over the world. April 2 is his birthday and it is also Children's Book Day.

    Andersen was born(出生) in 1805. When he was a little boy, his father read him a story every day. He felt very happy at that time. But his father died when he was 11 years old. Then he had to leave school. Andersen started working as an actor and singer. He loved reading books so much that he went back to school at 17. His first book came out in 1835. From then on, he wrote about one book a year for 37 years.

    Colin Boyle was born in 1973 near Dublin, Ireland. While he was ill in hospital at age 10, his uncle gave him an old violin. He loved it right away. After he left the hospital, he practiced at his school every day after class.

    One day in 1987, John Leaf, the manager (经纪人) of several successful musicians, came to Colin's school. He was having a meeting with the headmaster when he heard Colin practicing. After the meeting, he found Colin and invited him to appear in one of the concerts he was organizing that year. Colin, however, refused Leaf's invitation because just then he was preparing for some important school exams. Years later, Colin made it to college to study engineering. At college he met Kim O'Malley, who was studying chemistry (化学). Kim was also good at music. Being students, they didn't have much money and they usually worked in a restaurant on weekends.

    One evening in April 1992, while Colin and Kim were at work, they heard that there would be no live (现场演出的) music in the restaurant that night because the singer could not come. Colin and Kim persuadedthe owner of the restaurant to let them play. Everyone was shocked to hear how good they were. After that, they worked hard together and improved greatly in music.

    "Look here, Watson," Holmes said after we finished lunch. "Please sit down. I want to talk to you. I don't know what to do, and your advice is important to me. You smoke your cigar (雪茄烟) while I explain."

    "Please continue," I said, as I lit my cigar.

    "Now there're a few important points in young James' story. One, his father cries Coo-ee before he sees him. Two, he talks about a rat (老鼠). I think young James is telling the truth (真相)."

    "So why did Mr. McCarthy shout Coo-ee then?"

    "Well, he was not shouting Coo-ee to his son. It was by chance that James heard. The Coo-ee was to call the person he was meeting. But Coo-ee is an Australian cry, Australians usually say it when they meet to catch attention. Perhaps Mr. McCarthy was meeting someone from Australia."

    "I see. But why did he talk about a rat, then?" I asked.

Holmes took a piece of paper from his pocket and put it on the table.

    "This is a map of Australia," he said. He put his hand over part of the map. "Now, Watson, what can you read there?" he asked me.

    "ARAT," I read.

    "And now?" Holmes moved his hand.

    "BALLARAT," I read.

    "Yes. That was the word the dead man said. It's a place called Ballarat. His son only heard the 'rat' part of the word. Old Mr. McCarthy was trying to say where his murderer was from, the town of Ballarat. The grey cloak is point No. 3. If James is telling the truth, there was a grey cloak (斗篷). So now we have an Australian from Ballarat with a grey cloak."

    "Great!" I replied.

    "And it's someone who lives nearby, as the Boscombe Pool isn't open to the public. Only people from the farm nearby or the Turner house can go there," said Holmes.

    "That's wonderful, Holmes!" I exclaimed.
