I' m ready to do my first jump 10 months after a skydiving (特技跳伞) accident. I can't wait! That accident almost killed me and it made me stay in hospital for half a year. During the boring long days, I didn't feel glad to be alive. I was wondering how I could live without my favorite sport.

It all started one evening after a nine-to-five day. I was sitting on the sofa when an ad (广告) came on the television. "Try skydiving," it said. The next day, I went to the skydiving school in my town. At the end of the day's lessons, I knew I found the fight sport for me.

I will never forget my first jump. Five of us walled to the runway and got into a plane. I was scared, but the others were tailing and joking, and I started to feel a little relaxed. It was a beautiful, cloudless day and the sun was just going down. Soon it was time to jump. As I jumped from the plane, I shouted. But then everything became quiet. It was the most wonderful four minutes of my life.

From the first jump, I was hooked. I started spending all my free time skydiving . It became my reason for living. Things were going really well. Then an accident happened on my 104th jump. I broke my both legs, right arm and nose. I stayed in hospital for six months, but I still couldn't forget skydiving.

My mother couldn't understand why the only reason I wanted to get better was to go skydiving again. But for me, skydiving is life, and life is skydiving.

A young and successful man was driving down a street in his new Jaguar (捷豹汽车). He was going too fast. As his car passed, a brick (砖块) knocked into the Jaguar's side door. He was very angry and drove the car back to the place where the brick had been thrown. The angry driver jumped out of the car and stopped the nearest kid, shouting, "Who are you? What are you doing? That's a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you do that?"

The young boy was apologetic. "I'm sorry. I didn't know what else to do," he said. "I threw the brick because no one else would stop."

With tears dropping down his face, the young boy pointed to a place just around a parked car. "It's my brother," he said, "he fell out of his wheelchair (轮椅) and I can't lift him up."

Crying, the boy asked the man, "Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me." Moved deeply, the driver hurriedly lifted the disabled boy into the wheelchair.

"Thank you and God bless you," the thankful child told the man. And the man simply watched the little boy push his brother down the sidewalk toward their home.

It was a long and slow walk back to the Jaguar. The dent (凹痕) was very noticeable, but the driver didn't want to repair the side door. He kept the dent there to remind him of this message: Don't go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention.

God speaks to our hearts every day. Sometimes when we don't have time to listen, he has to throw a brick at us.

I arrived at my mother's home for our Saturday family dinner. The smells of food flew over from the kitchen. Mother was pulling out quilt after quilt from the boxes, proudly showing me their beauties. I knew they were all made herself. She was preparing for a quilt show on TV. When we began to fold and put them back into the boxes, I noticed something at the bottom of one box.

I pulled it out. "What's this?" I asked.

"Oh?" Mom said, "That's Mama's quilt."

I spread the quilt. It looked as if a group of school children had made the pieces together.

"Grandmother made this?" I asked in surprise. My grandmother was a master at making quilts. This certainly didn't look like any of the quilts she had made.

"Yes, right before she died. I brought it home with me last year and made some changes,"

Mom said, "I'm still working on it. See, this is what I've done so far."

I looked at it more closely. She had made a line straight(直的). At the center of the quilt, she had stitched a piece of cloth with these words: "My mother made many quilts. She didn't get all lines straight. But I think this is beautiful. I want to see it finished. Her last quilt."

"Oh, this is so nice, Mom." I said. I was sure now that by completing my grandmother's quilt, my mother was honoring her own mother. I realized that I held in my hands a family treasure. It started with the loving hands of one woman, and continued with the loving hands of another.

Ever since I was a child,my mouth has caused me trouble.I'm not a bad person;I have just had a hard time learning when to keep my mouth closed.

My mom has told me again and again,"Robert, your constant bad words are hurting me.If you continue to be this rude, you will get into big trouble."

It's been a problem at school several times, too, when teachers have told me something I didn't want to hear.I used to feel it was my duty to stand up for myself and tell them ______ off.

One day in English class I began working on my homework until I heard a classmate talking behind me.It was Nathaniel, talking to himself as usual.

I said ever so nicely,"Nathaniel, would you be quiet?"

Nathaniel continued talking to himself.I quickly shouted,"Nathaniel, shut up!"

For the next five minutes,we threw hurtful words back and forth at each other.

"At least I don't have an ugly lazy eye like you!"I shouted.

I knew this would bother him deep inside. It would hurt his feelings and shut him up.

What I said filled him with anger. He tried to reach over my seat and grab me as he shouted."That's it! That's it!"

Surprised at his reaction,I sat back in seat.Never had I seen Nathaniel act like this before.

Later on,we were taken to the principal's office.

There, the principal told US to discuss the matter. It wasn't until then that I finally found that when I hurt someone physically, the wounds(伤口)eventually heal. But when I hurt them with my words, sometimes the pain never goes away.

At the end of the discussion,I said sorry to Nathaniel.

When I headed back to my room,I spent some time praying. I began to think about how often what I said hurt others. But I believe that as I keep praying and asking God to help me,he'll tell me when to keep my mouth closed.

There are many different kinds of disasters around the world. As an adult you know what to do during a disaster, but what about the children? Some adults think it would probably never happen to them, so they don't teach their children what to do. Before it's too late, here are ways to help you prepare your children for a disaster.

Educate: It is always good to let your children know about possible disasters. This doesn't mean children have to live in fear. When teaching them about disasters, keep the conversation positive (积极的) by telling them there is a solution (解决办法) to the disaster. Keep the conversations short, allow for questions and answer them honestly.

Prepare: Always be prepared. And that is the best piece of advice for children. For example, when preparing for bad weather, get the tools you need, like candles, radios, food, water and medicine. Teach your children what is needed in certain disasters so that they know what is available for them, if ever needed.

Plan: You should always have a plan for you and your children for any dangerous situation. Write out a simple list that they can read. The plan could start with "listen to an adult's advice and/or call 119".

Practise: Once you have got the correct safety tools and worked out the right plan, practise every few months. Practising what to do during a disaster with your children will help them if the time comes.

Disasters can't be avoided but they can belessened once you are prepared and ready for one.
