    Improve your memory

    Do you find yourself forgetting where you left your keys or blanking out information on important tests?Before your next big exam, be sure to check out some of these tried and tested ways of improving memory.

    Focus your attention on the materials you are studying. Attention is one of the major components (组成部分) of memory. In order for information to move from short-term memory into long-term memory, you need to actively attend to this information.

    Structure and organize the information you are studying. Researchers have found that information is best organized in related groups.Or you can make an outline of your notes and textbook readings to help group related concepts (概念).

    When you are studying unfamiliar material, take the time to think about how this information relates to things that you already know. By establishing relationships between new ideas and previously existing memories, you can greatly increase the likelihood of recalling (回想起) the recently learned information.

    Pay extra attention to difficult information. Remembering information at the beginning or end of an article is easy. However, recalling information from its middle can be difficult.Another way is to try restructuring what you have learned so it will be easier to remember. When you come across an especially difficult concept, devote some extra time to memorizing the information.

A.Use this approach in your own studies.

B. Try grouping similar concepts and terms together.

C. Relate new information to things you already know.

D. Repeat the information you are studying to improve memory.

E. Try to study in a quiet place and concentrate on your learning.

F. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to help improve your memory.

G. You can overcome this problem by spending extra time memorizing this information.

Travel Light

    Getting away for a short time always seems like a great idea—until you have to pack. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}The rule is: pack light. Here are some tips to help you pack.

    Make a list. Think of what you need from your head to your toes.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} When you've done this once, it'll be easier next time.

    2). Consider buying small-size samples of shampoo, toothpaste, and other items at your local drugstore. You can reuse the plastic containers next time you go away too.

    3). Choosing which clothes to bring is probably the hardest packing decision to make. Think once again from head to toe — hat, shirts, jeans, sneakers, etc. Once you've picked out what you want to bring, think carefully. Do you really need that extra pair of jeans? If so, fine.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Don't try to fool yourself. You are the one who will be left holding the bag.

    4). Weather is an important factor in your packing. If it's cold, you could wear a jacket, a sweater, a regular shirt, and a T-shirt. Putting them on will keep you warm. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Remember how much easier it will be to carry your bag! As for shoes, you may want to call ahead to see if dress shoes are necessary. If so, one pair will be enough, along with one pair of comfortable shoes. Remember that it is you who have been invited somewhere, not your things. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} So, do it right—pack light.

A. Mixing and matching is a smart and easy way to lighten your load.

B. But packing won't be a problem if you remember one simple rule.

C. You will have an easier time if you're weighed down.

D. But make sure they're really worth the extra weight.

E. It's best to bring these things with you.

F. And it'll leave more room in your bag.

G. Keep the list for future reference.

    Stress(压力) is a popular cause of major diseases affecting people worldwide. It is so common that people have begun to search for the best and easiest ways to reduce stress. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

Exercise for a better life.

    Regular runners say that there is no better feeling than the one you get when you finish your daily run. Organize it.

    Keeping your workplace and home organized is also a way for you to avoid stressful situations. Working in a messy(凌乱的) area keeps your brain thinking on several different things at the same time.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

Manage your time wisely.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Sticking to(坚持) your schedule gives you focus and a goal to work on. It also helps you avoid missing out on deadlines which are a great source of stress. Managing your time wisely means managing your stress.

    Speaking in public is most people's least favorite thing. The reason is that we are all afraid of making fools of ourselves.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    But stop biting your finger-nails. Public speaking is easy. It's just plain talking, and you talk all the time. Although I'm basically shy (honest!), I've been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more than 30 years, and I can tell you that public speaking is not a “gift” like musical talent.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Here are some of the lessons I have learned:

    Your audience is going to come away with one or two of your main ideas. One or two. Not ten or 20.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} And if you don't have a clear idea of what you want to say, there's no way your audience will.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}— how you are going to open, what major points you want to make and how you're going to close.

    When I do a radio or TV piece, I often write the last sentence first.{#blank#}5{#/blank#} A strong close is critical: the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember.

    The standard length of a vaudeville (杂耍) act is usually 12 minutes. If all those performers singing and dancing their hearts out couldn't go on longer without boring the audience, what makes you think you can?

A. Some people are born to be good at making speeches.

B. Anybody who can talk can speak in public.

C. Try to relax yourself before making the speech.

D. The more important the speech is, the more frightened we become.

E. If you can't express in a sentence or two what you intend to get across, then your speech is not focused well enough.

F. When you know where you're headed, you can choose any route to get there.

G. No matter how long or short your speech is, you've got to get your ducks in a row.

    People know the dangers of fires. It's good for a family to learn how to prepare for a fire. There are some suggestions:

    Put a smoke alarm in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}.  The sound tells everyone to leave the house at once.

    Make escape plans. Everyone should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out. Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily.

    Buy fire extinguishers(灭火器) in the house.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}.

    Practice for a fire. We do fire practice because we teach children about fire safety. Everyone in the family should know the following fire rules:

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}.The fire can grow more quickly if you open the door.

    Stay close to the floor.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}. The best air is near the floor because smoke rises.

    What should you do if your hair or clothes start to burn? First, stop. Don't run! The fire burns faster because of more air. Drop! Fall to the floor. Then roll! Turning over and over will make the fire go out. Put a blanket around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you.

    There are many possible causes for fires. A wise family is ready all the time. If there is a fire, don't forget to call 119 for help.

A. Smoke can be more dangerous than fire

B. Everyone in the family should know how to use them.

C. Don't open a hot door.

D. The alarm makes a loud sound.

E. Everyone should follow your plan.

F. Open the windows!

    Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” {#blank#}1{#/blank#} I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.

    First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if you choose a positive attitude. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn't matter. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.

    Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive(主动的) language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.

B. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary.

C. They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time.

D. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.

E. Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.

F. However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”!

G. The second reason lies in the reluctance of using what has just been learned.

    Our personal strengths are part of what makes us unique as individuals, and part of the value we offer to the world around us. If we're not aware of our personal strengths, we can't use them well.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    The activities we enjoy often slow the skills we naturally have. Take a few moments to think about the things you really love doing and look at the potential parts that enrich these experiences for you.

    Ask trusted friends and family.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Many of us come from cultures where it's polite to be modest, and this can make it hard to make out our own strengths without any outside help. Ask trusted friends or family what they think your personal strengths are, and see if any of the answers surprise you.

    What qualities do you like in yourself?

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}For example, if you like the fact that you stick to your goals, even when the going gets tough, one of your personal strengths might be determination.

    What makes you proud?

    Think about three examples in your life when you really felt proud of the way you acted or responded. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}What values did you display and why do you feel proud of the way you acted?

A. Notice what you enjoy.

B. Take a look at a list of personal strengths.

C. Sometimes it's hard to judge our strengths exactly.

D. Most of us have role models in our business and personal life.

E. What was it about your action or response that made you proud?

F. We potentially miss out on true achievements in our lie and careers

G. The qualities you like about yourself will show some of your personal strengths.
