Green Energy for Today and Tomorrow

Did you know that most of the energy we use comes from the sun? For example, the sun helps plants to grow. Plants that grew millions of years ago turned into coal, oil, and natural gas（天然气）. We call these fossil fuels（化石燃料）.

However, fossil fuels cause pollution. This is bad for the Earth. Fossil fuels are also nonrenewable. Some day they will be gone. So, scientists want people to use green energy.

Why is green energy important? First, it is clean. It doesn't hurt the Earth. Next, it is renewable. It won't run out. Green energy gives us almost 25% of the electricity we use today.

What are the main sources（来源） of green energy?

Water Power

Water power uses moving water in rivers and dams（堤坝）. Moving water has energy. Water power makes 

16.6% of the electricity we use.

Wind Power

Is wind power new? No, it isn't. People used wind power many years ago. Wind power makes 4% of the electricity we use.

Solar Power

Solar power comes from sunlight. The sun shines on solar panels（太阳能电池板）, and electricity is made. Solar power is now as cheap as some fossil fuels. It makes 

1.5% of the electricity we use.

Biomass energy（生物质能）

Biomass energy is energy that we get from plants around us. For example, dead wood or grass is burned in power stations. This makes electricity. Biomass energy is green energy because we plant new trees or crops（庄稼） after we use it. Biomass energy makes 2% of the electricity we use.

New Green Energy

The ocean rises and falls each day. This moving water can make electricity. We call it tide power. There is also heat under the Earth's surface. Scientists can use this heat for energy, which is called heat power. We may find other sources of green energy in the future.

Some day, green energy could make 100% of the electricity we use. That's good news for the Earth!

Computers are useful machines. They can help people a lot in their life. For example, they can help people to save much time to do much work, and they can help people to work out many problems they can't do easily. Our country asks everyone to learn to use computers except the old people.

Today more and more families own computer. Parents buy computers for their children. They hope that computers can help them to improve their studies at school. But many of their children use computers to play games and watch videos. For most students, computers cannot help them to study better but make them fall behind. So computers are locked in boxes by parents.

In some other countries, even some scientists also hate computers. They say computers let millions of people lose their jobs or bring them a lot of trouble. Will computers really bring trouble to people or can they bring people happiness? It will be decided(被决定) by people themselves!

It is true that people with better education* are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don't. It seems that the purpose* of education is to make people get jobs. But not all the people agree with this idea.

Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education in order to make more money in the future. This was probably one of the earliest purposes of education. In fact, if education is just a way to make a living, people don't need to spend so much time in school. They can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. And people don't have to learn maths and languages so carefully. So it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.

So what is education for? Education is well-rounded and it should improve a man in many ways. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative* thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of all, take an interest in the world.

I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the only reason.

Confidence is very important in daily life. It can help you to develop a healthy attitude (态度). A study shows that the people who are more confident are much happier. They can have more chances to make themselves successful. But how to be more confident? Here are some suggestions: 

Speak loud 

When you are not confident, you can't do well what you want to do. You speak in such a low voice that other people can hardly hear you. Try to speak loud enough so that people can hear you clearly. The high voice can help you become more confident. 

Play sports 

Physical exercise makes you tired but completely relaxed. A strong body helps you be full of confidence. 

Encourage yourself Write down a list of things you did during the day to see how many things you have done well. Did you finish your homework? Did you tell a joke that made everybody happy? Give yourself praise for the good things you've done. 

 Get rid of (消除) fear 

Fear comes along with failure (失败). But it's easy to overcome (克服) if you know that failure is part of your life. Don't hide your head just because you said something stupid last time. Try to start again and believe you can do better. 

Pick up a hobby 

If you like singing, sing as much as you can. In some ways, a hobby can make you outstanding. And it will make you happy and confident. 

Harbin is the capital (首都) city of Heilongjiang. Many people like Harbin because of its winter tourism (旅游). Last winter, people talked a lot about Harbin on the Internet.

To make visitors feel welcome, Harbin did a lot of things. At the airport (机场), there were shows to watch. And visitors could get warm clothes to wear in dressing rooms. Local (当地的) people also helped a lot. When they were not busy, they went out to give free rides to visitors. When some tourists couldn't find hotels, the local government (政府) let visitors stay in their service center at a low price.

Many of the tourists were from southern China. It doesn't snow very often there. They dressed themselves like potatoes and many of them are shorter than the people in Heilongjiang. So the local people called them "southern little potatoes". The nickname (绰号) quickly became popular on the Internet. The tourists liked the nickname and shared their warm experiences of Harbin. A girl left a note at the hotel, saying, "This southern little potato is leaving. Harbin is so beautiful. The people are so friendly. I can't wait to come back again. Yours, southern little potato." After people saw this note online, "the southern little potato is leaving" became a hot topic, and more and more people shared their trips.
