I was in my room, slowly getting ready to head to the theatre with the rest of my family.

I don't want to put on the show in the theatre that day. "Kirstie, come here!" Mum called from down the hall.

"What is it?"I called back and found my mum outside the bathroom, holding a wet book.

Mum gave the book a shake. "Henry's book was in the bathroom. Did you put it there?"

"Not on purpose," I said disinterestedly,"It was already on the corner, and it happened to fall in when I stepped out." Mum looked at

me angrily,"You could have picked it up. That would be the kind thing to do."

Mum never acted like this before. Being kind wasn't actually that hard. But after Henry and his dad moved in, everything felt different. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, Mum took me aside.

"This is our corner of the world now, Kirstie,"she said. "Let's try to make it a good one. "

I nodded unwillingly.

The theatre was busy as usual. One play a year in the theatre used to be what Mum and I did together most excitedly. But now, with Henry here, it won't be special any more.

Soon, it was my turn. I forgot my anger at Henry when I went on the stage.

As we kids lined up on the stage, I realised how poorly I had tied(系) the drawstring on my skirt —my bow(蝴蝶结) suddenly came untied and my skirt began to drop — in front of hundreds of people!

It was not a dream! It was terribly real! People soon began laughing, and I could feel my face burning.

Then Henry, beside me, came to my aid! He tidied up my clothes, tying the drawstring with a beautiful knot (结). He made a joke about me"not"knowing knots, and most of the people laughed again! This time, the laughter felt OK!

At the end of the show, I found Henry and touched him on the shoulder. "Thanks!"

He smiled, "Knot a problem!"

I smiled guiltily (惭愧地 ). Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to have a new person in my corner of the world after all.

When Helen Keller was nineteen months old, a brief illness made her both deaf and blind. With such limitations, how could Keller ever be expected to find happiness?

Because happiness has been considered a personal concept, it is difficult to define（定义）. Many people throughout history have tried. Greek scientist and philosopher Aristotle wrote, "Happiness depends upon ourselves," which is not a definition but an observation that individuals are responsible for their own happiness. Roman statesman and philosopher Lucius Seneca wrote of a particular quality of happiness, saying, "True happiness is to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future."

Is there a scientific basis（基础）for happiness? Researcher suggests happiness is a matter of perspective: "Truly happy individuals construe life events and daily situations in ways that seem to maintain their happiness, while unhappy individuals construe（理解）experiences in ways that seem to reinforce unhappiness". Basically, this means the way you choose to remember events and situations affects your happiness.

Some research concludes happiness is made up of three parts: pleasure, engagement and meaning. Pleasure involves things that give physical and emotional joy, such as playing a sport or seeing beautiful art. Engagement involves positive interactions（互动）with other people, such as studying or working with people whose company you enjoy. Meaning relates to feeling that your work is useful and important to others.

Even with scientific rationalization（合理化）, questions remain. For example, are younger people happier than older people? In fact, the opposite seems to be true. This may be because younger people tend to experience higher levels of negative emotions, such as anxiety and anger. The young also have less control over their lives because they lack both independence and the ability to make many of their own decisions.

Perhaps the most important question is whether you can change how happy you are. Studies of identical twins suggest that genetics forms about half of your happiness level. Your quality of life influences about 10 percent of your happiness. That means about 40 percent of your happiness is determined by your choices and actions.

From this explanation we can see that one way you can make yourself happier is to set goals. Keller had a definition of happiness in keeping with this idea. She felt happiness did not come from simply trying to satisfy your own desires but rather by contributing your time and skills to improve the world in some way.

Even if you are unable to achieve a goal that makes the world better in some small way, simply trying will likely give your life meaning and, at the same time, happiness.

One summer evening, Sylvie hurried the cow through the forest, following a path to her grandmother's home.

Suddenly she heard a loud whistle(哨子声).

"Hello," a young man carrying a gun called out cheerfully, "I've been hunting for birds." he explained,"but I've lost my way." Sylvie led the stranger through the forest.When they reached her house, the stranger explained his problem to Sylvie's grandmother and was invited to stay there for the night.

After dinner, the young man said he was a scientist, who collected birds."Do you put them in a cage?" Sylvie asked."No," he answered,"I shoot birds and put something special into them to preserve them.I have over 100 different kinds of birds at home.Their feathers(羽毛) look as bright as before."

"Sylvie knows a lot about birds too," her grandmother said proudly.

"Maybe she can help me," the young man said."I saw a white heron(鹭) not far from here two days ago.I've been looking for it ever since.It's a tall, strange bird with white wings.Have you seen it?" he asked Sylvie.Sylvie didn't answer.Her heart began to beat fast.She had seen that bird! The young man added."I would give $10 to the person who showed me where the bird is."

That night Sylvie thought about the wonderful things she and her grandmother could buy with ten dollars.She also wanted to be the young man's friend, because she had never seen anyone so handsome.

When the sun began to rise, Sylvie quietly left her house and hurried to a huge tree.She wanted to climb to the top of the tree where she could see the whole forest.

Sylvie's face was pale when, at last, she reached the top.Suddenly, a bird with big white wings flew past her and landed on a branch below her.The other white heron was sitting on the ne st in a nearby tree.Now Sylvie knew the bird's secret! An hour later, Sylvie returned to the house.The young man would give them the money they needed.Besides, Sylvie wanted to make him happy.But Sylvie was silent.She remembered how the white heron flew through the air and how they watched the sun rise together from the top of the forest.Sylvie could not speak.Finally, she decided to keep the secret of the white heron.

The young man went away later that day and never returned.
