Say "No" to the Wrong Idols (偶像)

It is natural for young people to worship (崇拜) cool and good-looking young "idols." We always look {#blank#}1{#/blank#} to listening to their new songs and movies. We spend a lot of time {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (care) about them—even more time than we spend on our studies or work. We often wonder: What {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (make) them win the fame? What could I do to be cool like them?

Well, guess what? Many of your idols {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (be) only made to "look" cool. If you could see into their {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (person) lives, you would find these stars aren't so bright. Their beauty is skin-deep (肤浅的). Some of them might not be as honest, kind or hard-working {#blank#}6{#/blank#} you are! They aren't {#blank#}7{#/blank#} worshiping at all. 

Modern "idol culture" often sends the wrong message that life is always easy and fun. But the best actors, the top-ranking (顶级的) sports stars, the world's {#blank#}8{#/blank#} creative scientists and the bravest soldiers all experience the stress of dealing with life's many {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (difficulty). 

Idols can serve as important role models in our lives, so it's very important {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (choose) the right ones. We should celebrate people who teach us important values that can help to guide us on the road ahead. 

The next time you see some pretty popular "stars," ask {#blank#}11{#/blank#} (you): Do I really need these people in my life? What kind of people should I really worship?

When I was little，I was really little.But my dream was big.I dreamed of being a basketball player.I tried out for the teams at school，but I was never given a chance.

As I got older，I did grow a little bigger，but not a lot bigger.On my 12th birthday，I decided to try a new sport：running.I told Grandpa，"I'm going to be a sportsman.""

"Dave，"Grandpa began gently，"if you can't be big，you can do something big."

I ran 12 miles on my 12th birthday.On my 13th birthday，I did it again，but I added an extra（额外的）mile.On my 14th birthday，I ran 14 miles.15 on my 15th，16 on my 16th，and you guessed it—17 miles on my 17th birthday.All this running inspired（激发） another big dream.Someday，I'd run the Boston Marathon（马拉松赛）.I told Grandpa about my decision."But，Dave，you haven't trained for the marathon.Are you sure you're OK？"Grandpa asked.But he was still sure to walk over and cheer me on.I ran fast that day.But I fell at Mile 18 and the workers sent me to the hospital.Later that night，I called Grandpa and told him I failed."No，"he said calmly，"you didn't fail.You discovered something."I did？"I asked.

"Yes，you discovered that big dreams don't just come true.They take work.If you train and work hard，I am sure to wait for you next year and cheer you on."

I trained every day，running miles and miles.Sadly，just two months into my training，Grandpa died.He wouldn't be waiting for my second Boston Marathon.I decided I'd run for him.

That day，I ran fast，"Keep going!You can do it!"His words filled my head as I forced my legs to make each painful step.As I crossed the finish line，I threw my arms in the air and cried， "Grandpa，I did it!"

Have you noticed these days the temperature is not so normal？The greenhouse effect（温室效应） is one of the reasons. 

How does it work？

A greenhouse is a building with glass walls. In the daytime，sunlight shines into the greenhouse and warms the plants and air inside. At nighttime，it's colder outside，but the greenhouse stays warm inside. That's because the glass walls of the greenhouse keep the sun's heat inside. 

The greenhouse effect works much the same way on Earth. Greenhouse gases in the air such as CO₂ hold heat like the glass walls of a greenhouse. During the day，the sun shines and Earth's surface warms up in the sunlight. At night，Earth's surface cools，giving heat back into the air. But some of the heat is kept by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. That s what keeps Earth warm. 

How do humans influence the greenhouse effect？

Human activities are changing Earth's natural greenhouse effect. Burning fuels（燃料） like coal and petrol puts more CO₂ into our atmosphere. Too much of these greenhouse gases can cause Earth's atmosphere to hold more and more heat. 

What brings down the greenhouse effect on Earth？

Plants can help a lot. All plants—from big trees to tiny plants in the ocean—take in CO₂ and give off O₂. 

Do you want a job in the holidays? Just go for it. First, you need to know what kind of job is suitable for your age and interest.

If you're 13 to 15

It seems that you can't work almost anywhere, but you're probably allowed to clean your neighbors' cars or walk their dogs. There is no lowest wage (工资）for children under 16. By law, you can't work more than 35 hours each week during school holidays. And you can't work before 7 am or after 7 pm.

If you're 16 to 17

The lowest wage for 16~17-year-old teenagers should be no less than seven dollars per hour. You can't work in a pub or bar, but you can work in many other places. By law, you can't work more than 40 hours each week.

What jobs are out there?

Obviously your choices are limited (限制) by the fact that you can only work during school holidays, but the following situations are fine.

At Christmas, most shops are short of hands, so you may find something to do there. In autumn, there's always fruit picking. It can be pretty hard work, but it pays really well.

If you're mad about football, you can choose to work in a sports shop or help out at a local football club. No matter how much you are paid, you are doing what you like.

The men's Rugby World Cup 2023（橄榄球世界杯赛） starts on September 8th in France. The first game is between France and New Zealand. France may feel a little scared（害怕的）. New Zealand is a small country，but it has the best rugby team in the world!

Sione Mulipola，36，is a rugby player and coach（教练） from New Zealand. Rugby is very important there because it's the national （国家的） sport. "People start playing from a young age，just like I did，" he said. 

Rugby is different from other sports，like soccer. You need to tackle（抱摔）people. "As a coach，I see many players feel scared about getting hurt，but we teach them the rules and the right ways to tackle，"said Mulipola. 

A good rugby player can run fast and has a strong body. "They also need to think quickly. This makes the game so exciting to watch and play，"said Mulipola. It is said more than 100，000，000 people will watch the Rugby World Cup 2023.
