Once there was a duck called Rodney. He lived in a town near a big forest.

Most animals in the town thought Rodney was a clever* duck because 1 could tell the stories of many great writers and even the stars in space. Rodney himself was also proud*of being the cleverest in his town. He 2 asked others for help.

One day, he went for a walk in the forest alone. And before long, he was 3 . Just then, a bird flew by and said to him, "You're quite far from the town. Do you want me to show you the 4 ?" Rodney didn't want other animals to think that he, a clever duck, would 5 help. So he said "Oh no, I'm OK!" to the bird before hurrying off.

It was getting dark. Another bird flew past and saw him. "Hey, are you 6 the way to your town?" The bird asked. But the proud duck told him that he was just watching the stars, and then hurried away again 7 asking for help.

"How can you see the stars in a forest with so many trees?" the bird thought. "A 8 young duck!"

It was really dark then. Rodney couldn't see anything to guide him. He became afraid and sad. Rodney finally 9 he would ask for help when someone came along. He waited with hope 10 not an animal came by. The forest was dark and quiet. The clever duck spent a cold night shivering under a leaf.

"If I was really clever, I'd listen to others!" he thought.

I have invented robots which improve the work of cars. My love of making things began when I was a kid. I really became 1 about inventing after I learned about Thomas Edison.

In Grade Four, we 2 a project by our teacher in class. We had to write to a company and learn about the products. I chose the Thomas A. Edison Company. Soon after,3 company sent me a book about the life of Thomas Edison. 4 excited I was!I enjoyed reading and re- reading about his inventions. I like the recorded sound and the electric light best.

My dad 5 my interest in inventing and encouraged me. He showed me 6 I could turn my ideas into plans and then into new things. Once, I surprised 7 witha model plane I made. Later, we found a similar model plane 8 a store. I learned that different 9 often invent similar things. I also learned that not all great ideas work. Failure is a common part of the inventing.

My dad is always looking for a better way 10 a simple job. His guiding hands, together with my interest in inventing has led me to become an engineer and inventor. Of course, I also thank Thomas Edison. He is my hero.

Long long ago, there is an old man. He lives in an old house." This house is too noisy(吵闹的)," he says. The door and the floors creak(咯吱作响). The windows go bang- bang.

One day, the old man goes to see a very wise(睿智的) woman." My house is too noisy," he says." What can I do?" The woman says," Take this goat to your house." And the old man does. The goat goes maa- maa. It breaks a chair with its horns(角). Bang!

The next day, the old man goes back to the woman." My house is still too noisy!" he says. So the wise woman gives(给) him a cow to take to his house. The cow goes moo- moo! The goat goes maa- maa! The old man puts(放) a quilt over his head.

The next day, the old man goes back to the woman." My house is still too noisy!" he says. So the wise woman gives him a donkey(驴) to take to his house. The donkey goes hee- haw, hee- haw! The cow goes moo- moo! The goat goes maa- maa! The old man shouts loudly," It is too noisy!" 

The next day, the woman comes to the house. She says," Open the door. Let out the goat, the cow and the donkey." The old man does. And what do you know?      ▲      The old man goes to bed and sleeps all day long.

There are some very good inventions which, for one reason or another, don't become popular. These inventions should be better known, even though I think that some of them are crazy. Let's have a look at some of these inventions and see if you agree that they should be more successful. 

The Australians had a great idea to stop people from drinking and driving. The idea was that if a driver wanted to start the car, she or he would have to blow into a bag first. If there was too much alcohol(酒精) in their breath, the car wouldn't start. It sounded like a great idea to me, but people said that they might need to drive the car in an emergency even if they had drunk too much alcohol. Another idea I liked was an invention by a scientist who thought his children watched too much TV. He linked the TV to an exercise bike so that the electricity to power the TV was generated(产出) by the bike. If the children wanted to watch a lot of TV, they had to pedal(踩踏板) very hard. I found another invention on the Internet which was intended (倾向于) to encourage good habits. Believe it or not, this invention was an ashtray(烟灰缸) which spoke to you when you lit a cigarette! The "voice" of the ashtray was activated (启动) by the heat from the cigarette and reminded you how dangerous it is to smoke. 

One of the strangest inventions I have come across is a bicycle which can cross rivers! The idea was that when you came to a river, you could inflate a huge plastic ball all around the bike. You would then get into the ball which would float on the river while you pedaled the bike inside the ball! Why not use a bridge instead? A friend of mine at school once bought a strange pair of football shoes. On the bottom of the shoes there was a rotating pad of studs (转动钉垫). The idea was that you would change direction more quickly if the studs rotated with you. The problem was that every time you stopped you changed direction whether you wanted to or not! I think he wore those shoes twice! One thing I would like is a baseball cap with a built-in radio so you can listen to sport all day with your hands free. While we are on the subject of sport, the Americans invented a kind of robot for sports fans. If you were watching your team on TV on your own, you could press a button and the robot would do "high fives" with you! Fantastic! I wonder if you have any good ideas for inventions like these.

Have you ever been to Xitang Water Town?

Xitang Water Town is a small ancient town on water. It is in Jiashan County, Zhejiang Province, China. Xitang is famous for its bridges. alleys(小巷) and sheltered corridors(廊). 

Nine rivers run through Xitang, dividing it into eight parts, with stone bridges, quiet streets, and corridors. The bridges of Xitang date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. 

Through a bird's-eye view of the whole town, green waves are everywhere and every family lives near water. In the morning, water

runs under bridges; thin mist(薄雾) is like silk: pink walls on both banks stand tall and houses are reflected(反射) in the water. In the evening, the setting sun shines softly and songs come from fishing boats. The whole old town is like a poem and a picture. It is hard to know that it's people in the picture or the picture in the heart of people.

Xitang enjoys convenient transportation. Visitors who travel to Xitang usually need to go to Shanghai or Hangzhou first, then go to Xitang from there. 

From Shanghai: Traveller s may take direct buses from Shanghai South Long- distance Bus Station or Shanghai Tour Bus Centre to get there. 

From Hangzhou: You may take direct buses from Hangzhou Jiubao Bus Centre Station to get there. 

It is recommended to spend a whole day to visit the water town.
