I'm not much of a crier most of the time. But {#blank#}1{#/blank#} when I was reading a book on a plane, I started crying. Of course, it came as a big surprise when tears came up, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't {#blank#}2{#/blank#} myself.

    Oh no, not this now. I thought to myself. But even as the thought entered my brain. I felt the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} hot drop of salty water coming down my face. I put my head down, hoping that I could go on reading.

    In fact, the harder I tried, the more tears pushed their way out of my eyes. You could guess how surprised the man next to me looked.

    My head {#blank#}4{#/blank#} in shame. He must think I was crazy. Maybe I could turn towards him, hold up the cover of the book and say in my crying voice. "I'm sorry, sir. It's just a really good book!" But I didn't, say anything. Instead, I just put my head back against the {#blank#}5{#/blank#} and let the tears run. Do you know what decision I made while I was crying? My decision was that it was OK if he thought I was crazy. I preferred to be crazy instead of being the kind of person who wouldn't cry when the situation called for it, or who wouldn't let {#blank#}6{#/blank#} feel anything at all.

    I've been that girl who has spent so much time trying to make sure people didn't think f was crazy. But now I don't want to be that girl any more —that bored and {#blank#}7{#/blank#} girl. I'd rather {#blank#}8{#/blank#} this girl who is able to forgive (原谅), love and act, even if it means being disappointed or being hurt again and again.

I always think my daughter Kendall is the best. When she was only three, she 1  for the people, like a little angel.

When Kendall was five, we noticed that she 2  had a tic(抽搐). When the problem got worse, we took her from doctor to doctor. During the treatment(治疗), Kendall kept on singing. 3  , her tics disappeared when she sang.

When Kendall was sixteen, we thought she would be cured (治愈) soon. However, a(n) 4  thing happened.

At a party, Kendall jumped on Jim for a piggyback ride. But he bent lower than she thought and she jumped higher than 5  thought. Kendall flew over his back and landed on the floor—on her neck. People sent her to 6  immediately, and she became paralysed (使瘫痪) from the neck down. She couldn't 7  . But to my daughter, the biggest 8  wasn't whether(是否) she would walk again, but was whether she could take part 9  a famous show.

As the days went on, feeling on her left side 10  , but she was still paralysed on the right side of the body. One day, a friend 11  with a microphone(麦克风) and put it on her bed. Every day, Kendall tried hard to pick it up. It was more 12  for her to pick up that microphone than a spoon or a fork.

Sometimes she had to bite a toothbrush to take her mind off the 13  . We all cried because of the pain we saw. But on the day —only three months after her accident — we cried with joy when she sang, 14  she didn't enter the Top of the show.

A young man named Mark lived with his father, a wise old man. One day, Mark told his father {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (sad) that he made little progress in learning the guitar, although he had tried hard. Mark asked his father {#blank#}2{#/blank#}some help.

"Follow me, and I {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(lead) you to the high hills around our village tomorrow,"said his father. Then, they set out. The road was long and difficult, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Mark still followed his father. As they got higher, the father said that he wanted to go to the top of the highest hill where he had never been. Mark was surprised but decided {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(help) his father. With great difficulty, Mark helped his father climb the hill. Finally, they got to the top.

"When you were {#blank#}6{#/blank#} little boy,sometimes the elder children laughed at you. Do you remember why?" said his father.

Mark nodded. He remembered that as a child, he and all his {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(friend) called this hill Mount Impossible, because small children couldn't reach its top.

"And today,"said his father,"you not only climbed here, but also helped {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(I) to get here."

"I became bigger and stronger than before,"said Mark.

"Instead of {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (climb) Mount Impossible every day, you played on the smaller hills and became {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (good) at climbing,"said his father. "It became possible for you to climb Mount Impossible while you weren't even thinking about it."

Our family had lived in Los Angeles for two weeks. "LA is not a bad place, Sonny." Dad said. But I didn't like the city. I missed* Michigan. I missed my old friends and even the trees there.

That afternoon, I went out to find a basketball court*. Dad said there was one around, but it was twenty-minutes' walk away! When I got there, I saw three children playing some kind of one-on-one*. Two of them were taller than me, and one was about my size.

The short boy played well, but the other two were too tall for him. One-on-one wasn't his game. He needed someone to pass to. I went down to the other basket and played alone. Then I heard someone calling me. It was the short boy.

"I'm Louie. Are you coming to join us? Small against* tall."

"Sounds good." I thought for some time. "I'm Sonny."

Louie introduced the other two boys. They were Chuck and David. We nodded to each other and started the game. Like I said, Louie really was a good player. He just needed someone to pass to. Soon, Chuck and David found    ▲   . The score was always close. Both teams had to try our best. In the end, Louie and I didn't win the game, but we made it interesting.

A little later, I saw Dad come. I said goodbye to them.

"Coming back tomorrow?" asked Louie.

"Yeah."

The sun was going down behind pink and orange clouds. On the way back home, Dad said, "Who said Los Angeles doesn't have great sunsets*?"

"LA is not a bad place." I said. Now, it could be home.

"Everybody， it' s time for our group project. Let's get to work!" says Ms. White. 

Amy is the leader of one group. She is not 1 forward to working with her group because a boy named Ray is always absent from the group meetings. He doesn^' t follow the rules ，and he2 to do any work. This slows the whole group down. 

Amy considers telling Ms. White about these problems， but she doesn't want to get Ray in trouble. 3 ， she decides to talk to him and find out what the4 is. She says，"Everyone is working hard on our project. But so far， you haven't done anything. Is there something wrong？"

Ray thinks5 for a few seconds， and finally says， "It' s not that I don't want to be in the 6 . Sometimes， I don' t really understand the things we' re learning. I know it' s not fair， but I don't want to say something stupid， so I do7 . 

Now Amy understands. Ray isn't 8 he just needs help!"From now on， she says，"I will do my best to help you feel more confident （自信的）. Then you can do your share， and it will be 9 for everyone. "Thank you! I'll try hard to do my part. " says Ray. 

Amy feels happy. She realizes that10 about problems is better than keeping them as secrets. 

Yesterday, Peter had a wonderful trip with his parents on the Ferris wheel (摩天轮) in Bao'an Coastal Cultural Park. He was so amazed at the new city landmark that he wanted to know more about the Ferris wheel. So he looked it up in an encyclopedia online.

In 1892, so mc leaders from Chicago planned a fair. They wanted it to be the greatest fair ever. It would show the newest ideas in science, business and art. They also wanted to build something amazing at the fair. The Eiffel Tower had been built three years before in France. The Chicago leaders wanted something even more impressive. So they asked people to send in designs.

G. W. Ferris was a young engineer. He heard about the fair. He wanted to attract visitors to the fair, so he decided to design a big wheel made of steel (钢). The wheel was 250 feet across. Large cars hung from the end of each spoke (车轮辐). Each car carried 60 people in a big circle through the air.

On May 1, 1893, the fair opened. People from around the world came to see the latest inventions. They felt the heat of new electric stoves. They stood in the cool wind of small fans. They even saw a machine that washed the dishes.

Ferris's wheel was the main attraction at the Chicago Fair. People stood in line to ride on it. They wanted to see the fairgrounds from the wheel's highest point. As the wheel turned upward, some people were afraid. Others were thrilled at what they saw below. Fountains shone in the sunlight. Flags waved in the wind. A train snaked through the grounds. At night, coloured lights li t up the sky.

Today we call these smaller wheels "Ferris wheels".
