Life can be so wonderful, full of adventure and joy. It can also be full of challenges, setbacks and heartbreaks. Whatever our circumstances, we generally still have dreams, hopes and desires—that little something more we want for ourselves and our loved ones. Yet knowing we can have more can also create a problem, because when we go to change the way we do things, up come the old patterns and pitfalls  that stopped us from seeking what we wanted in the first place.
This tension between what we feel we can have and "what were seemingly able to have is the niggling  suffering, the anxiety we feel. This is where we usually think it's easier to just give up. But we're never meant to let go of the part of us that knows we can have more. The intelligence behind that knowing is us—the real us. It's the part that believes in life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to feel a little "dead" inside because you're dropping "you".
So, if we have this capability but somehow life seems to keep us stuck, how do we break these patterns?
Decide on a new course and make one decision at a time. This is good advice for a new adventure or just getting through today's challenges.
While, deep down, we know we can do it, our mind—or the minds of those close to us—usually says we can't.
That isn't a reason to stop, it's just the mind, that little man or woman on your shoulder, trying to talk you out of something again. It has done it many times before. It's all about starting simple and doing it now.
Decide and act before overthinking. When you do this you may feel a little, or large, release from the jail of your mind and you'll be on your way.

Nowadays more and more people are talking about geneticallymodified foods ( GM foods). GM foods develop from genetically modifiedorganisms (有机体), which havehad specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineeringtechniques. These techniques are much more precise where an organism is exposedto chemicals to create a nonspecific but stable change. For many people, thehightech production raises all kinds of environmental, ethical, health andsafety problems. Particularly in countries with long farming traditions, theidea seems against nature.

In fact, GM foods are already very much a part of our lives. They were first put on the market in 1996. A third of the corn and more thanhalf the cotton grown in the U. S. last year was the product of biotechnology, according to the Department of Agriculture. More than 65 million acres ofgenetically modified crops will be planted in the US this year. The geneticgenie is out of the bottle.

However, like any new product entering the food chain, GM foodsmust be subjected to careful testing. In wealthy countries, the debate aboutbiotech is not so fierce by the fact that they have a large number of foods tochoose from, and a supply that goes beyond the needs. In developing countriesdesperate to feed fastgrowing and underfed populations, the matter is simplerand much more urgent: do the benefits of biotech outweigh the risks?

The statistics on population growth and hunger are disturbing.Last year the world's population reached 6 billion. The UN states that nearly800 million people around the world are unhealthy. About 400 million women ofchildbearing age don' t have enough iron, which means their babies are exposedto various birth defeats. As many as 100 million children suffer from vitamin Adeficiency, a leading cause of blindness.

How can biotech help? Genetic engineering is widely used toproduce plants and animals with better nutritional values. Biotechnologistshave developed genetically modified rice and they are working on other kinds ofnutritionally improved crops. Biotech can also improve farming productivity inplaces where food shortages are caused by crop damage attributable to drought, poor soil and crop viruses.

There's a curious thing about people. All of us are driven in some way or another to achieve—we want to run faster,be more creative, win more awards, and earn more money. But here's the thing: if you want to offer warm words of wisdom, constructive criticism or "360-degree feedback",then think again. Most of us would rather not hear it.

Our easily-broken egos(自尊心)are partly to blame. We all want to meet our own expectations of ourselves, and so being critised can present a huge threat to our egos.Yet as decades of psychological theory and research have indicated, people have endless tricky strategies of remaining positive in the face of criticism. For this reason, rather than us welcoming feedback with open arms, our first response is often an automatic defense. These reactions serve to make us feel better about ourselves.

Psychological research exposes this unhealthy appetite for ignorance. In one study, students watched a false educational film about a serious disease called "TAA Deficiency".In fact,TAA Deficiency is completely fictional, but the students were not told this information;instead, they were asked whether they wished to provide a cheek test for assessing(评估)their risk of developing the disease.Half of the students were told that if they ever developed TAA Deficiency, then the treatment would involve them taking a two-week course of pills.Of this group,52% agreed to provide the cheek test. The other half of students learned the treatment would involve taking the pills for the rest of their lives.Of this group, only 21% agreed to the test.

These findings show a common pattern seen in other studies within and beyond the context of healthcare. That is,people are especially resistant to hearing feedback when they believe it could force them to do something difficult or unpleasant.

It has been around for centuries, but up until very recently, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) wasn't fully accepted abroad. Proof of this can be found in The Treatment (《刮痧》), a 2001 film that tells the story of a Chinese man in the US who's accused of abuse after he uses guasha, a form of TCM treatment, to cure his grandson's disease.

During the last 10 years or so, however, TCM has been getting increasingly popular all over the world. A report released by the State Council Information Office on Dec. 6 says this style of health care, which includes different forms like herbal medicine and exercise, has spread to 183 countries and regions.

"We have set up 10 TCM centers outside China, and all of them are popular among locals," Wang Guoqiang, head of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said at a news conference on Dec 6. "Governments of 86 countries and regions have signed agreements with the Chinese government on TCM corporation."

One of the reasons behind the growing popularity of TCM is the increase of scientific research into it. And after Tu Youyou, the Chinese scientist who discovered the anti-malaria (抗疟疾) drug qinghaosu (青蒿素), won the Nobel Prize in 2015, TCM became even more famous internationally.

However, all these achievements in TCM don't mean that it's problem-free. Over the years, TCM has faced challenges in being able to prove that it has certain effects.

Some researchers have suggested TCM should be more exact and work together with Western medicine.

"Bringing together with Western medicine and TCM, rather than being in competition, is where the potential for great effects is," said Bernhard Schwartlander, the China representative of the World Health Organization.

These days, it seems like everything is going digital. You can find almost everything on the Internet.

Many people find this way of life more convenient, because they can complete their daily chores(琐事) from the comfort of their own home.

Firstly, online shopping can be far less stressful than hitting the high street shops. There are no huge crowds of people or boring long queues. With online shopping, it's just you and your computer. It's like you have the whole shop to yourself! Secondly, online stores don't have opening and closing times. This is perfect for anyone with a busy schedule. If you want to, you can even place an online shopping order at three o'clock in the morning!

In the busy modern world, there are clearly many advantages to online shopping. However, in my experience, there are also several cons… With online shopping, you can't try before you buy, and that's a definite disadvantage for me. Often, when my new clothes arrive, I find they don't fit very well. It's always annoying when a dress is a little too big, or when sleeves are too short… Sometimes, the clothes are not what I was expecting. A piece of clothing might look great in photos online, but quite different in real life.

In these cases, you want to return the item, but here lies the biggest problem with online shopping. You have to pay for your order's delivery, and for an item to be returned to the warehouse! These charges are often very expensive, which suddenly make online shopping seem a little less convenient… That's why I don't choose to shop online very frequently. For now, I will continue to find the time for a trip to a real shop, where I know exactly what I'm buying!
