D

Have you ever had dreams about building a robot? Or putting together a spaceship? Or even seeing your face made out of chocolate? Done. All you need is a 3-D printer.

The possibilities of 3-D printing seem endless(无穷尽的).All the user has to do is to design an object on the computer and choose a material to print in. The printers print in hundreds of different materials including glass, sugar and even skin! When the user presses(按)“print", the 3-D printer spreads the materials layer(层)by layer and like magic the object is produced.

The first 3-D printer was invented in 1986 by an American, Charles Hull. But 3-D printing has only become cheap enough recently for most people to use. Designers now use 3-D printing to create unusual things. The Dutch artist Dirk Vander Kooj prints furniture made from old fridges. And doctors have used 3-D printing to print human body parts! The Telegraph reported in February that scientists from Cornell Medical College even printed a man-made ear.

But like a lot of new technologies, if 3-D printing gets into the wrong hands, it can be dangerous.

In 2011 a group of four men in the US used 3-D printing to produce ATM skimmers(提款机盗刷器).These were placed on an ATM and stole over $400,000 from users of the ATM. It is terrible to think that criminals like them might one day use a 3-D printer to print a gun.

But for better or for worse, 3-D printing has been put into use. In a few years, you'll probably be wondering how you could ever live without your 3-D printer!

举一反三
What will the house look like in the future? Could it have gardens on its walls, or a pool with fish for dinner? Architects(建筑师) believe that they are all possible. The only thing for sure is that the houses will be as green as possible.
                                                                                        The tree house
Many architects in the world would like to build a “tree house.” Like a leaf, the surface of the house collects sunlight during the day. The energy can be used to heat water, produce electricity, and even create fresh air for the home. The “root” (根) of the house is deep under the ground. It uses the soil (土壤) to keep the home's temperature.
                                                                            The Lizard house
Like a lizard (蜥蜴), changing color with the weather is the most important design of a lizard house. When it's in the bright sun, the cover of the house will turn dark to protect it from strong heat. During dark days, it turns white and takes in as much light and heat as possible to produce energy.
                                                                                      Meals at home
This design is perhaps as much about the future of food production as architecture (建筑风格). It has gardens on the outside wall of the house. People can plant tomatoes, carrots and green tea on them. So every day in the morning, you just need to walk outside and collect your meals.
                                                                        Learning from the past
Looking to the future isn't the only way to be green. Sometimes, ancient techniques (古老的技术) can also help cut down energy use. For example, a chimney (烟囱) can be a useful air conditioner because it is easier to flow out hot air from the chimney.

Thousands of years ago, people didn't know that the Earth moved. They thought the sun really did move across the sky. The Greek god Helios was said to drive the sun around the sky with his chariot(战车). But now, these ideas have all changed. Nowadays, it is the sun that drives our “chariot”around the sky.
So what does all this mean? Well, quite simply, there is now a plane (or “chariot”) that is powered by the sun. It has special parts in its wings. These parts absorb power from the sun. They absorb so much power that they can carry on flying at night. In the Greek myths(希腊神话), Helios had to take a break at night. It seems we're finally even more efficient than the gods themselves.
This plane is called Solar Impulse (“太阳驱动”号). It will fly across the US in May. This is very important for the future of the world.
So why is solar energy so good for us? Well, other kinds of energy cause a few problems. If you live in China, you've probably noticed the pollution. This is caused by burning coal or gas to make energy. The heat and chemicals(化学制品)from this make things work. But if we use the heat from the sun, we don't have to burn anything, and there's no pollution.
Solar energy is not all there yet. It needs to be improved. But the best thing about it is that, unlike coal and gas, it doesn't run out. Solar Impulse could keep flying forever. Well, actually, the sun will run out too, one day, but not for another 5 billion years. That's a pretty long flight.

We use the Internet for many things: business, shopping, writing letters, talking to people, finding information and so on. In recent years, a new kind of English has grown on the Internet. There's no real word for it yet, so we'll call it e-talk.

People don't like typing too much. To save time, they turn phrases into a few letters (called acronyms). Acronyms are often used in chat rooms(聊天室). Some of them are:

BTW (by the way)                 BRB (be right back)

LOL (laughing out loud)            IMO (in my opinion)

People also use many abbreviations. They are shortened forms of words. Some common abbreviations are:

    info (information)                  puter (computer)

    pic (picture)                       sec (second)

We usually don't see people when we communicate(交流) on the Net, so people have new ways to show feelings. Most people use their keyboards to draw "feelings", such as:

:-) (happy)    ;-)  (joking)   :-(  (sad)       :-O  (surprised)

These days, many forums (论坛) have picture feelings. For example:

There are even whole new words, like "newbies"(someone who is new on a chat board or forum). When you write something bad about someone else, it's called "flaming" the person.

It takes time for people to get used to(适应) e-talk. Also, different groups on the Net have their own special ways of communicating. Newbies sometimes have to ask other people what they mean. As the Internet grows, e-talk will continue to grow and change.

How do you light up the night sky? The answer is by using electricity. But did you know that nature can glow (发光), too?

Scientists have found many glowing living things. Most of them live in the ocean. Some use their lights to talk to each other. Others use them to hunt, to mate (交配) or to protect themselves. The vampire squid (幽灵蛸), for example, uses a cloud of light to scare enemies.

Scientists around the world are looking at this kind of light for new ideas. In 2013, the US company Gleaux said it has created the world's first light-producing plant, the Daily Mail reported. It is a genetically-modified (转基因的) plant. It can glow like a firefly.

Alexander Krichevsky, the company's founder (创始人), and other scientists hope that in the future, glowing plants could replace lamps and glowing trees could light up highways. Krichevsky also hopes the technology could be used in farming. Farmers could know when their crops need water or are ready to be picked if they glow.

While Gleaux is working on glowing plants, the French company Glowee is trying to use glowing bacteria (细菌) to light up shop windows and street signs. It's the same type of bacteria that cause a type of squid to light up, New Scientist Online reported.

"Our goal is to change the way we produce and use light," said Glowee founder Sandra Rey. "We want to help reduce the 19 percent of electricity consumption (消耗量) that is used to produce light.
