①What is eye contact? Eye contact happens when two people look at each other's ev es at the same time. Eye contact is a kind of nonverbal communication(非语言交流)and it has different meanings in different cultures(文化).

②Eye Contact in Western Europe: In many European countries such as Spain,France and Germany, it is right and polite to keep eye contact with another person.However, Europeans often avoid eye contact when they are walking across a busy street or riding bikes to their workplaces. Yet in a country like France, a man may feel free to look at others. This may happen when he is interested in them.

③Eye Contact in the Middle East:Middle Eastern countries have their rules for the eye culture. For example, some of them have strict rules for eye contact between the sexes(性别). Only a short moment of eye contact is OK between a man and a woman.

Garry Golden is sharing his ideas with some university students.

Golden is a futurist(未来主义者) . Futurists are scientists who study(研究) the world today and use that information to make predictions about the 

future.Some futurists study the environment.Some study human society(人类社会), Golden studies transportation(交通运输).

Golden says there will be fewer cars in cities in the future.

Golden says. "We have to build lots of parking lots (停车场) for cars, but having so many parking lots is not efficient . Much of the time the 

parking lots are empty (空的). Golden says cities will make new laws(法律)to limit(限制) the number of cars in the future.

"Buses have the same problem as parking lots,"Golden says. "Sometimes they are full, and sometimes they are empty." Golden says in the future 

people can use phones to send messages(信息) when they want to take the bus. And buses can change (改变) their ways to pick(接) them up.

"Traffic is a big problem for cities today," Golden says."But there are so many things we can do to improve it. I believe that in thirty years we will live in a very different world."

①The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides a year into twenty- four solar terms. Start of winter, Lidong in Chinese, the 19th solar term of the year, falls on November 7th this year.

②Lidong was once a big day in ancient(古代的) China. Before the day, the emperor(帝王) would take a shower and have no meat. On that day, the emperor and his officials(官员) would all dress in black and go out of the city to welcome winter. Today, to welcome the day, some people choose to have swimming competitions in the rivers in some cold places such as Harbin in Heilongjiang Province.

③As winter comes, the weather gets colder and colder. Chinese people often eat enough food to keep their bodies warm and healthy. On the day of Lidong, people in North China love eating dumplings. In South China, people love to eat chicken, duck and fish. In some places in Guangdong Province, people eat sugar cane(甘蔗) on the day. They think this is good for their teeth. In Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, people will eat green onions for good health. In Taiwan Province, people often eat mutton.

④Lidong is the time to start wearing warm clothes. In old times, the emperor would hand out warm winter clothes to the officials on the day. People would also remember to give" clothes" to their lost family. They would also have delicious food to show how much they missed the lost ones.
