How I Handle My Attention

Recently, I started to feel pressed. Having to work two different jobs, plus writing and working on personal projects is difficult.I would wake up earlier. I would separate my day into 3-4 different pieces and try to fill them with various projects until I realized that it just doesn't work. Why? Because time management is not as important as attention management.

I learned a few things:

Focusing on a task is returning to it every 48 hours.

There is a cap of two different tasks that you can do within a single day. I learned that it's not the work that exhausted me the most, but the switching between different types of work.

And personal projects should be taken care of on my own time (e.g.,on weekends and holidays).

The more creative a task is, the earlier you should work on it. I am a morning person, so I try to write before breakfast.

Just telling yourself to do a specific activity five minutes longer than usual can help create stillness, and it leads to high-quality focus.

Attention is a rare resource. It's only the deep focus, the "deep work", as Cal Newport calls it, that leads to high-quality results and productivity. You'll thank yourself later.

A. Stillness breeds focus.

B. Workweek should be for work.

C. Devote 2020 to mastering this vital skill.

D. If it takes longer, it's not in the "focus zone"

E. Stay quiet, and I found myself deeply focused.

F. What matters today is where we focus our mental energy.

G. So I started to apply the old time-management techniques to myself.

Making Peace with Your Parents

As a teen, you're going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are increasing.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}Here is the challenge: Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers that are all out in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses. Sometimes conflicts can't be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents.

For example, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted or hungry. A good time to talk is when you're all relaxed. Timing is everything if the conversation begins to turn into an argument, you'd better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation for now.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Listen to what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you're listening. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about each others' feelings can disagree without getting things ugly.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you're going to do. Some teens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget that parents are more than rule-maker—they're interesting people who like to watch movies and go shopping—just like their teenagers!

What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be rocky?{#blank#}5{#/blank#}You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend an ear. Remember you can only change your own behavior. Your parents are the only ones who can change theirs.

B. And then you'll be able to accept what your parents say.

C. You can pick it up again when everyone's more relaxed.

    Q & A

Question:I have recently got a senior position within my company. One of my new tasks is to make monthly progress reports on my department in front of other senior officials.     It is not as simple as opening the door and hitting the track in winter. There are a few things you can do to ensure you are getting the most out of your run, and, importantly, not doing more harm than good.

    Warm up, cool down

{#blank#}1{#/blank#}Your muscles need some time to warm up when it's cold, so take it easy when you set off and do a few stretches (伸展) once you're finished.

    Drink water

You might not feel hot, but that's because sweat evaporates (蒸发) more quickly into the chilly, dry air. So be sure to drink water before, during and after cold-weather workouts. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}A belt bottle conveniently attaches to your waist so you don't have to carry it and can have a drink whenever you feel like it.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

Running in cotton is a bad idea. Wear thin, breathable layers of synthetic ( 合成的)clothing that help protect you from the wind and snow, but still let out heat and moisture (水分) .Thirty percent of your body heat escapes through your hands and forty percent through your head. Wear a hat, or beanie (无边小便帽) ,and gloves so your circulatory system can distribute warm blood to the rest of your body.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Run into the wind.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}Obviously, it will be an easier passage home with some extra help from Mother Nature. But, more importantly, you won't have the wind in your face for the second half of your run, when you are more likely to be sweating and catch a chill.

A. Dress right.

B. Keep warm.

C. Don't go too fast, too soon.

D. Start and finish in the same way.

E. Don't wait to drink water until you feel thirsty.

F. Head out into the wind and come home with it at your back.

Please wear loose clothing, mostly cotton. It is obvious that wearing clothing that is loose rather than tight is welcomed in summer. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. This carries away the warmth that your body produces and allows cooler air to flow back in.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}. When it's really hot out, materials that “breathe” — allowing the flow of air through the fabric (衣料) itself — also work to keep you cool. Cotton and linen are among the most breathable fabrics,so look for clothes made of those substances.

Your body controls its temperature via a small peanut-shaped section of the brain known as the hypothalamus (下丘脑). {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. It turns the temperature up or down based on various factors — such as how cold or hot the skin is.

Certain parts of the skin have a larger influence than others. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. They get their name because you can feel your pulse there, and the reason you can do that is because vessels are so close to the edge of your skin that one can easily hear or feel the flow of blood.

When you want to lower your body temperature, cooling those pulse points with cold water or ice sends a signal to the brain that says, “Turn cold.” {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. Focus on pulse points that are easy to reach: the insides of your wrists, the area around your temple, and your neck. Holding an ice pack or even a cold washcloth against the skin on these regions will make your entire body feel cooler.

A. It allows air to flow past the skin

B. Sweating helps to cool off the skin

C. These areas are called pulse points (脉冲点)

D. The type of fabric you wear has an influence, too

E. This fools your brain into turning down its thermostat (恒温器)

F. This region works almost like a thermostat in a home

G. Exercising in extreme heat is usually not recommended

Building the thinking habit is important because it helps you live with a purpose. How can we build the thinking habit? Here are some tips.

    Be curious

Curiosity is powerful. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} It also helps you recognize the ideas when they come. Curiosity is an important attitude to have in building the thinking habit.

    Read widely

If you want to come up with good ideas, you need to feed your mind with good ideas. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}This will give you fresh, new ideas. Don't just read from the fields you are familiar with. Read from other fields as well.

    Read actively

    Not only should you read widely, but also you should read actively. Find some ideas and think about how you can use them. My favorite way to do this is by highlighting the book I read. I will then put the actionable ideas in my idea journal (笔记). {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Keep an idea journal

When you find a good idea, don't just keep it in your mind. Instead, write it down to catch the idea. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Keeping an idea journal makes you more sensitive to new ideas. You will quickly recognize them because you already have the habit of catching ideas.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

Of course, it doesn't do you much good if you just write down ideas. Take time to read these ideas every now and then. In my case, I mark the ideas that I consider important and review them regularly. This often opens the way to new ideas.

A. Design your own ideas

B. Go over your ideas

C. In this way, others can also benefit from your ideas.

D. One way to do that is to read.

E. Otherwise, the idea might be gone forever.

F. It makes you like finding new ideas.

G. This helps me get the most out of the book.
