India has many festivals, with some celebrations that last for weeks. However, none of them come even close to Holi, India's most colorful and fun festival. Celebrated on the day following the full moon, this year's festival happens to be on March 19th.

    As with most Indian festivals, this one also has many different folk stories. Most of them center around the success of good over evil. The most popular one is about a king, who hates his son Prahlada for loving the creator of the Universe－Lord Vishnu. When every attempt to stop him fails, his sister, Holika believed to be immune (免疫的) to fire, joins in the effort by inviting the young boy to sit with her inside a huge fire. Helped by the power of Lord Vishnu, Prahlada escapes safely, while the evil Holika is burned to death. To remember this event, huge outdoor fires are lit in the night before Holi in order to clean the air of evil spirits and to celebrate the death of the evil.

    So what's so great about this day? While there are some fun parades (游行) and folk songs and dance performances, the most fun of all is walking to the streets and splashing (泼洒) people with water guns and dry colors and even covering them with entire buckets of colored water. On this day, everybody is fair game, no matter how old or how young.

    At about midday, the splashing comes to an end and people living close to oceans or rivers usually take a bath in the water to clean themselves before going home to a delicious home­made big dinner and a well­deserved short sleep, following this full day of fun and activities.

    Helen Monson has always been interested in helping her community. Her first volunteer experience was for the American Red Cross when she was in high school. When she was a school teacher, she also found time to volunteer.

After she retired, she started volunteering to help the old. When her father was older, he was not able to see as well as he used to, which made her sad because he had always enjoyed reading.

    She decided it would be fun to read to elderly people in her community. She also helped one woman write her stories. Ann was almost 100 years old, and Helen wrote down information about her life when she visited Ann. She put the information in a book and got it published. Ann was very excited to share her life story with her children and grandchildren.

    One day Helen read an article in the newspaper about refugees (难民) who needed to learn English. Now, she meets once a week with Sahra, a 38-year-old woman from Somalia. Sahra is learning reading and writing skills. Helen gave Sahra a camera and asked her to take pictures of her daily life. She developed the pictures, and then asked Sahra questions about them. In the end they wrote a book together and used the photos in the book. This helped Sahra learn many new words about her everyday life.

    Helen says, “The most rewarding part of volunteer work is becoming friends with the people I help. They enrich my life as well as I enrich theirs.”

    I was attending a party one night given in Sir Ross's honor; and during the dinner, the man sitting next to me told a humorous story based on the quotation(引语): “There's a divinity that shapes our ends, rough-hew them how we will.”

    The storyteller mentioned that the quotation was from the Bible. He was wrong. I knew that, and I knew it positively. There couldn't be the slightest doubt about it. And so, to get a feeling of importance and display my superiority, I appointed myself as an unwelcome committee of one to correct him. He stuck to his guns. “What? From Shakespeare? Impossible! Absurd! That quotation was from the Bible.” And he knew it.

    The storyteller was sitting on my right; and Frank Gammond, an old friend of mine, was seated on my left. Mr. Gammond had devoted years to the study of Shakespeare. So the storyteller and I agreed to submit the question to Mr. Gammond. Mr. Gammond listened, kicked me under the table, and then said: “Dale, you are wrong. The gentleman is right. It is from the Bible.”

    On our way home that night, I said to Mr. Gammond: “Frank, you knew that quotation was from Shakespeare.” “Yes, of course,” he replied, “Hamlet, Act Five, Scene Two. But we were guests at a happy time, my dear Dale. Why prove to a man he is wrong? Is that going to make him like you? Why not let him save his face? He didn't ask for your advice. He didn't want it. Why argue with him? Always avoid your sharp angle.” The man who said that taught me a lesson I'll never forget. I not only had made the storyteller uncomfortable, but also had put my friend in an embarrassing situation. How much better it would have been had I not become argumentative.

    Nine times out of ten, an argument ends with each of the contestants more firmly convinced than ever that he is absolutely right. You can't win an argument. You can't because if you lose it, you lose it; and if you win it, you lose it.

    When we talk about Americans barely into adulthood who are saddled with(担负着) unbearable levels of debt' the conversation is almost always about student loan debt. But there's a growing body of evidence suggesting that today's young adults are also drowning in credit-card debt and that many of them will take this debt to their graves（坟墓）.

    More than 20% overspent their income by more than $ 100 every single month. Since they haven't built up their credit histories yet, it's a safe bet that these young adults are paying relatively high interest rates on the resulting credit card debt.

    Although many young people blame "socializing" as a barrier to saving money, most of them aren't purchasing $ 20 drinks in trendy bars. They're struggling with much more daily financial demands.

    To a disturbingly large extent, the young and the broke are relying on credit cards to make it until their next payday. This obviously isn't permanent in the long run, and it's going to put a huge drag on their spending power even after they reach their peak earning years, because they'll still be paying interest on that bottle of orange juice or box of spaghetti (意式面条）they bought a decade earlier.

    A new study out of Ohio State University found that young adults are accumulating credit card debt at a more rapid rate than other age groups, and that they're slower at paying it off. "If what we found continues to hold true, we may have more elderly people with substantial financial problems in the future'" warns Lucia Dunn, professor of economics at Ohio State. "If our findings persist, we may be faced with a financial crisis among elderly people who can't pay off their credit cards."

    Dunn says a lot of these young people are never going to get out from under their credit card debt. "Many people are borrowing on credit cards so heavily that payoff rates at these levels are not plenty to recover their credit card debt by the end of their life which could have loss impacts for the credit card issuing banks,"

Teen Volunteers

    The zoo supports future conservation by having the youth involved in voluntary jobs. We have popular summer year-round programs that are designed to be fun and educational while building job readiness skills and inspiring youth to appreciate, care for, and conserve nature.

    ◆Zoo Crew

    Volunteer on a team to restore wildlife habitat at Lake Merced and Mountain Lake in San Francisco.

    Ages11-14

    Program runs: September through June

    Hours: One Saturday per month, form 10 a. m. to 12 p. m.

    The Zoo Crew will hold a necessary training for all prospective volunteers in August at the Zoo.

    ◆Nature Trail

    Nature Trailers work in close proximity (接近) to the Zoo's ambassador animal collection, and teach guests about adaptations and conservation. Nature Trailers will learn to handle a few small mammals and reptiles.

    Ages 12-14 (must be 12 by Memorial Day)

    Program runs: Memorial Day to Labor Day

    Hours: 2 days per week, 10 a. m. to 4: 45 p. m.

    ◆Talk on the Wild Side

    Learn to handle amazing animals like livestock and arthropods (节肢动物) while giving informational talks to zoo visitors. Use biofact carts to educate the public.

    Ages 14-17

    Program runs: Memorial Day to Labor Day

    Hours: 2 days per week, 9: 30 a. m. to 4: 30 p. m.

    ◆Zoo Teacher Assistant

    Help kids explore the world of animals through zoo tours, crafts, games and assist Zoo Camp teachers with activities. Gain practical work experience with children.

    Ages14-17

    Program runs: mid-June through mid-August

    Hours: A daily half-day or full-day shift for a minimum of four weeks over the course of the summer.

    Knowing what to do at checkout and properly preparing for it can turn a potentially heated situation into a quick thank you add goodbye. Below we made a list of five things you should remember at hotel checkout.

    Don't be late to check

    Hotels may add an extremely high price for being just a half hour late. If you know you won't make the cutoff time, it never hurts to call ahead and try to negotiate away a potential charge.

    Don't forget to double cheek the room and safe

    Make sure you don't leave things behind. If you have an early flight or checkout time, pack up as much as you can the night before so that last-minute rush isn't too annoying. Also, be sure to take out anything in the room safe.

    Don't forget to tip the housekeepers

    It's always polite to leave some money for the people keeping your room clean.

    Don't ignore the detailed bill

    You may be in a rush, but give the detailed hill a careful look to see if the hotel charge is different from the rate you initially booked.

    Don't get angry

    Shooting at the assistant manager standing behind the front desk probably won't help.

    When dealing with an unexpected item on the bill. Think about how difficult it can be to deal with annoyed customers. Keep calm and things may be solved better and sooner.
