Reading is a very active process. You have to imagine a scene in your head and understand what the writer is trying to say.

    Advantages of reading

You will encounter new words while reading. If there are too many new words for you, then the level is too high and you should read something simpler. But if there are a maximum of five new words per page, you will learn them easily. You can guess the meaning from the rest of the text or use a dictionary.

A reading text can be a model for writing.  What you read show you structures and expressions which you can use later in your writing.

You can see "Correctly Structured" English while reading. When people write, they use "correct" English with a proper grammatical structure. This is not always true when people speak.

    Reading tips

Try to read at the right level. Read something understandable. If you need to stop every three words to consult a dictionary, you will soon be discouraged.

Build up your new vocabulary. If there are four or five new words on a page, write them in your vocabulary book. Instead, try to guess their meanings as you read, then come back when you have finished reading to refer to a dictionary.

For example, read for a short time once a day. Fifteen minutes every day is better than two hours every Sunday. Fix a time to read and keep to it. You could read for fifteen minutes before you go to bed, or after you get up, or at lunchtime.

A. Try to read regularly.

B. Work at your own speed.

C. Learn vocabulary in context.

D. You don't have to write them while you read.

E. Reading gives you a good example of writing.

F. So by reading you learn grammatical English naturally.

G. That means that you are using your brain in a very active way.

    Time for a Brainstorm

A brainstorm is a session where a small group of people come together to solve a problem. People voice spontaneous ideas, sometimes just shouting, and a note-taker writes them all down.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}By getting different ideas out there, ideas are said to bounce off each other and even can help solve the problem at hand. Brainstorming is often a group exercise but individuals can also conduct personal brainstorms.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}He defined it as using the brain to storm a creative problem and do so in commando (突击队)fashion, with each stormer attacking the same objective. According to him, it was easier to tone down a wild idea than think up a new one. He placed importance on the collection of as many ideas as possible and dismissed scientific thinking.

Brainstorming has become one of the most popular ways to solve problems and hold discussion in schools and businesses. Many students brainstorm for a group assignment or even for a personal essay. Sarah Grace, 24, is an Australian marketing analyst and uses brainstorming during all her creative duties. She thinks brainstorming is the best way to work as a team. The sessions get everyone on the same page, everyone moving together and with a clear understanding about the foundations of an event or idea.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}.

However, a big problem with brainstorming is creating a mess that leads people further away from a solution.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}If you don't have a strong moderator or leader of the brainstorm, can go really off track, and people just start discussing something totally different. Brainstorming can sometimes confuse the human brain.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}If you brainstorm too much and your page is filled up with all the messy links, you can paint yourself into a bit of comer and get trapped with ideas.

You need to move past brainstorming as soon as you have something workable.

Why you shouldn't punish your kids for lying

    Getting your children to stop lying is challenging. There are many influences (TV, movies, video games and some great books) in which lies are common. Children see parents lie to others, if only to be polite. Most parents add to that with tales about the lives and activities of Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy, or to lessen fears. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

The most common reactions to children who lie are explaining why it is wrong and punishment. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Here are three better tools supported by research to use instead.

PRAISE: You could ask your child to say something that happened at school that is true. When your child obeys, praise him enthusiastically. Be specific: {#blank#}3{#/blank#} and give your child a hug or a high five. Aim for one or two interactions (互动) like this a day. If you happen to "catch" your child in a lie, say something like, "That is not true and could get you in trouble outside of the home."

MODEL: Explicitly tell the truth. This could be about something that happened when you were a child or something that happened during the day. It need not be dramatic. Another option is to play a game at dinner. Each person tells one thing that was true that day. Again, give a little praise to the child who normally lies if she plays along.

DECREASE PUNISHMENT AND MORALIZING: They are unlikely to change behavior or develop the conduct you want.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Rather, use very mild punishment (light scolding, short loss of privilege, a brief time-out). More severe punishments (shouting, taking away something for a week, hitting) are not more effective in actually changing the frequency of lying.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Usually they can be dropped by then. It is unlikely that lying will be completely removed, but with the right encouragement, k can be dramatically lessened.

A. It is not what that is, but about practice.

B. As ways of changing behavior, these are ineffective.

C. That does not mean ignoring, lying or letting it go.

D. "That was great! You told me what happened just like I asked. Wow!"

E. Try these procedures for two to three weeks and see where you are.

F. "You did a good job, but what you said was not what I'd like to know!"

G. Parents do this out of love, but for some children, lying can become a problem.

Food feeds the soul. To the extent that we all eat food, and we all have souls, food is the single great united across cultures. With food, there are more opportunities to connect to memory and family and place.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} Food as identity. French, Mexican, Chinese, and Italian cuisines each involve dozens of distinct regional foods. Every single culture and religion uses food as part of their celebrations.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Every season, every harvest, and every holiday has its own food, and this is true in America as well.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}Sometimes food means living on. While the Chinese cooks who exported “Chinese” food around the world ate authentic cooking at home, the dishes they served, thus creating new cuisines entirely, were based on economic necessity.

    Food as pleasure. Things have changed dramatically in the past 20 years when it comes to food in France. Some of the ideas of French food life may be a performance. France is this pastoral nation where people are spending five hours a day going to 12 different markets to get their food.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

Food as status. The introduction of global foods and brands has compounded food as a status symbol for some Chinese.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}In China, people eat food not necessarily for taste, but for texture. You can find food from all of the provinces of China in Shanghai, as well as every kind of global food style imaginable.

A. Food as survival.

B. Food as community.

C. It's the hardest to give up.

D. The celebratory nature of food is universal.

E. It is an accumulation, a function of your experiences

F. How and why you eat your food, is, of course, also very cultural.
