    Patrick and Rachel Hugens have biked around the world. The Hugenses, who live in Boise when not on their bikes, are 25 months into their latest round-the-world adventure, scheduled to end in March. They've visited 36 countries on this tour, touching Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. "Traveling by bike is the greatest freedom," Rachel said via email. "You can see people's daily lives and can communicate with them."

    Rachel warns, "Cycle touring can become addictive." Bike tourism is on the rise in the United States and around the world, according to the Adventure Cycling Association. The U. S. Bicycle Route System has grown 66 percent in the past two years and now has a presence in 24 states, including Idaho, and the District of Columbia.

    Dennis Swift,secretary of the Southwest Idaho Mountain Biking Association, rode across the U.S. last year- from Seattle to Salem, Mass. Six people started the tour and three finished, riding 52 out of 56 days. They averaged about 60 miles per riding day. Swift also rode through the Basque Country with a group of Boise cyclists last year. He's planning to participate in a Virginia bike tour this year. "When you get older, your health is most important," he said. "My mom had Alzheimer's disease. They say what's good for health is good for the brain, so riding is one thing to be first in my life."

    This is the third time that the couple have quit their jobs to tour. Rachel is a nurse; Patrick is an architect. Both regained their former jobs when they returned home in 2000 and 2007. They're uncertain what will happen this time. They've given themselves a chance to save extra money by going to work by bike and avoiding some bills that are basic for most ( cell phones, cable TV)."Traveling changes your view of money and what it can do for you," Rachel said. "We've met some cyclists traveling long term. They have many reasons to spend wisely."

    "The fellow cyclists we meet mostly come from Britain, Germany, Spain, Holland, Australia or New Zealand," Rachel said, "It is so nice to see that people all over the world are friendly and welcoming."

(1)、How many countries have the Hugenses visited on their latest tour? (不多于2个单词)

(3)、How do the Hugenses save extra money for their bike tours? (不多于10个单词)
(4)、What is the passage mainly about? (不多于3个单词)
举一反三

                                                                          Section A (10 marks)

          Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

                          Not all print dictionaries are the same, as you will notice when you select one. To make a wise selection, you should know how to distinguish

among three kinds of print dictionaries: pocket, desk, and unabridged. You should also know the copyright date of your dictionary, and

 check is special features.

          A pocket dictionary is small. Generally, it contains no more than 75000 entries, making it hardly to carry to class and efficient to use.

However, a pocket dictionary doesn't contain enough entries to be adequate for college reference homework. In addition, the information

about each word in a pocket dictionary is generally limited. A desk dictionary is medium sized, generally containing over 100,000 entries

 as well as extra features. For college work, you should own a current desk dictionary. An unabridged dictionary is a complete dictionary.

Abridged dictionaries, such as pocket and desk dictionaries, are shortened. Because unabridged dictionaries contain nearly all English words,

 they are large and heavy. They are often used by schools and libraries.

           If the copyright date of your current dictionary shows that it was published five or more years ago, consider investing in a more recent

edition. English is a dynamic language that admits new words and recognizes changes in meaning, spelling, and usage of familiar words.

 This is reflected in an up-to-date dictionary.

         In selecting a dictionary, check the features it offers besides vocabulary definitions. Many editions contain signs, symbols and foreign words.

 Some also contain CD-ROMs and access to special online features.

How to Be Confident

    We are all human and have weaknesses. Even if your physical appearance or social skills aren't what you wish they were, that doesn't have to stop you from being confident. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    *Make a list of special talents you have, or things you do that are good—morally(道德上) or otherwise. It doesn't have to be a specific skill;it can be an approach or an attitude that you hold through life. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Are you very patient with people? Do you always see the humorous side of things? Are you always there for your friends?

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} When you feel strongly about something, speak loudly and clearly and make eye contact with people. People will judge you all the time, and usually they'll misjudge you anyway, so why bother trying to live up to their opinions at all?

    *Take care of yourself. Eat a healthy diet and get enough exercise. Don't abuse your body, don't overload it, and don't deny it any of the things it needs. At the same time, don't obsess(沉迷). {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Those things are only band-aids(权宜之计) and make-up. Confidence comes from within. In order to be confident, you must value yourself and understand that your well-being is important.

    *Improve your posture. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Don't drop your shoulders. Make sure that your back is straight, your shoulders are square, and your chest sticks out slightly (but stay loose, otherwise you'll appear stubborn (固执的)and nervous). Good posture also helps with deep breathing, which helps with feeling calm and relaxed.

A. Here's how to believe in yourself.

B. But smiling at yourself in the mirror helps you to love yourself, thus making you a bit more confident.

C. Buying all the moisturizers (润肤霜) and creams will not bring you closer to who you want to be.

D. It is surprising how powerful the simple step of taking action can be.

E. Do you always stay calm, cool and collected, even in hurried situations?

F. Having good posture can actually make you feel more confident.

G. Know that you have important things to say and do.

Set a regular bedtime

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Choose a time when you normally feel tired. Try not to break this routine(惯例) on weekends when you will probably stay up late. If you want to change your bedtime, make the change gradually, such as 15 minutes earlier or later each day.

Eat the right food

    Some foods are more helpful to a better night's sleep than others. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Others like bananas, potatoes, and whole-wheat bread are also helpful.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Exercising provides lots of good health benefits(好处). A good night's sleep is one of them. But make sure you exercise in the morning or afternoon. The National Sleep Foundation reports that exercise in the morning or afternoon can help deepen sleep. However, those who worked out in the evening hours saw little or no improvement in their sleep.

Reduce(减少) screen time before bed

选择合适的选项完成短文。

    We know that sometimes studying a new language can be hard work but it can be fun too--and if we can make our learning experience fun, then we will learn better. So here are some more of our top tips for making studying fun.

    Firstly,{#blank#}1{#/blank#}—make sure your chair is suitable and it's at the right height for the desk. Make sure you have good ventilation(空气流通) and light and the space you're in isn't too hot--you don't want to fall asleep! And put away anything that might distract you, like your smartphone.

    Rather than just staring at books and being passive,{#blank#}2{#/blank#}. Why not record yourself and listen back to yourself speaking or reading out information. Or you could turn facts into songs and sing them out loud--this is sure to make information stick in your head!

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}—lashcards are very useful because they provide visual clues that help you remember things. You could also stick words, grammar rules and other bits of information on notes around your study space or other places around your house--so for example, you can read them when brushing your teeth!

    Don't feel daunted by the amount of studying you have to do.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}. Study in small bursts and vary the topics you study so you don't get bored and you stop retaining information. If you can, choose a time of day that best suits your natural preference. Some people work best at night while others work best early in the morning.

    Finally, don't overdo it--know your limits--if you study too hard it won't be fun and you won't absorb information.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}—and give yourself a small reward when you do.

A. try to become an active learner

B. So care your mental and physical health

C. get comfortable

D. So take regular breaks

E. Also be creative

F. And don't try to study continuously all day to fit it all in

G. But you can focus on some entertainments

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

    We've all experienced peer pressure (同伴压力). It happens to everybody. However, people have different reactions. Confident people refuse to do things they don't want to do, but shy and anxious people often give in. It may be because they want to be liked. It may be because they worry that their friends will make fun of them, or perhaps they're just curious about trying something new. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    It's hard being the only one who says no and the question is:how do you do it? {#blank#}2{#/blank#}If you think that missing maths, or smoking, or going somewhere you know your parents wouldn't like is a bad idea then the answer is simple:don't do it. It's your decision, nobody else's. You don't need to be aggressive. You don't need to shout and scream, but you must be confident and you must be firm. You need to say, "No thanks. I don't want to do that."

    Being on your own against everybody else is very hard, so it can really help to have at least one other peer, or friend, who will say no too. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} You want friends who will support you when you're in trouble. You don't want people who will always agree with the majority. Remember, the most popular people aren't always the most trustworthy.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}  You can learn a lot from people your own age. They can teach you great football skills or the best way to do your maths homework. They can recommend music and advise you on fashion. And don't forget you can tell them things too, and that always feels great. So, find friends who have similar interests. And remember, friendship isn't about feeling depressed and guilty. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. Choose your friends carefully.

B. Firstly, you must decide what you believe.

C. It's about sharing experiences and having fun.

D. Of course, peer pressure isn't completely bad.

E. It may be because they were all born to be stubborn.

F. Depression and guilt will surely give you peer pressure.

G. Whatever the reason, some people end up doing things they really don't want to.
