The sun is a huge, hot and bright star. It is important because without it there would be no life on the earth. The sun gives us light and heat.
All living things depend on the sun for their growth. Plants need light and heat to grow. They use the light from the sun to make food. But we human beings cannot make food by our own bodies from the sun. All the food we eat comes from plants in a food chain(链) . And the food chain starts with the sun . For example.
sun —→ potatoes  —→ chips
sun  —→ corn  —→ hens  —→ eggs
sun—→ wheat  —→ bread
Animals need sunlight, too. Just like us, their food comes from plants in food chain, which begins with the sun. For example,
Sun → leaf → caterpilllar(毛虫) → bird
Sun → seaweed(海藻) → small fish → whale(鲸)
With the help of sunlight, we can see things during the day. Even when the sky is cloudy, the sunlight is very strong and it shines through the clouds. If there was no sun, it would be dark all the time.

(1)、The sun is a           star.

A、huge, cold and bright    B、huge, hot and bright    C、small, warm and bright
(2)、What are the two main things the sun gives us?

A、Light and heat.  B、Heat and eggs.     C、Corn and light.
(3)、From the passage we learn that         .

A、when the sky is cloudy, there is no sunlight at all                  B、without the sun there will be no life on the earth C、we human beings can make food by our own bodies
(4)、All the food we eat comes from          in a food chain. And the food chain stars with the         .

A、plants; earth   B、plants; sun    C、animals; star
(5)、Which is the best title (标题) for this passage?

A、Plants need heat and light to grow B、All living things depend on the sun for their growth C、The sun is very important
举一反三
In the most southern part of our planet, there's a place that's covered with snow and ice all year round. But it has the clearest and cleanest air. Amazingly, in this place, the sun sometimes hangs even in the midnight sky. This place is Antarctica (南极洲): the coldest, windiest and harshest (恶劣的) place on the Earth.
As the world's least-known place, Antarctica is of great interest to scientists around the world. In 1983, China joined the Antarctic Treaty (《南极条约》). The treaty made Antarctica a peaceful place for member countries to do scientific research. During 30 years, China has sent many scientists to Antarctica. They mostly look at the resources under the icy land and do research about climate change and marine (海洋的) biology.
Antarctica is a place with fantastic views. However, life there is very hard. Food is one of the biggest problems. Frozen food which can be heated easily is people's daily food. Fresh vegetables are hard to grow in the cold weather. Therefore, scientists often eat dried or canned vegetables.
Sleep is also troublesome. In Antarctica, summer lasts from November to March. During this period, Antarctica points to the sun and receives sunlight 24 hours a day. In order to get some sleep, scientists cover the windows with black plastic cloth to create “night”.
Working in Antarctica is dangerous, especially when meeting gale-force(七级以上的)winds.Sometimes the wind is even stronger than a typhoon. It can easily blow people away.So there are ropes that connect buildings of some research stations.People can hold these ropes to keep their balance in forceful winds.
What's more, communicating with others is difficult. Without cables and Internet in some research stations, two-way radios are the only tools to communicate. If people want to say hello to friends and relatives, they can use satellite phones.
Although it is challenging(挑战) to work in Antarctica, scientists' passion to learn about this mysterious land will never end. It is hopeful that one day they will step every corner of this icy land.

Getting electricity has always been a problem for the 173 people living in Nuevo Saposoa, a small village in Peru, South America. However, things went from bad to worse in March 2015 after heavy rains damaged the only power cables in the area. The villagers were forced to use oil lamps, which are not only expensive but also dangerous because of the harmful gases they produce.

Luckily, researchers at the University of Technology (UT) in Lima, Peru heard about their problem and found a wonderful solution. They made a lamp that can be powered by plants and soil, both of which can be easily found in the Amazonian rainforest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up an LED light bulb.

While that may sound amazing and even impossible, the science behind the ides is quite simple. As plants create their food (using the sun's energy, water and chemicals from the soil), they also produce waste which they return to the soil. Tiny animals in the soil eat this waste and they produce electrons – the building blocks of electrical energy. The UT team put special sticks inside the soil to capture the energy and keep it in the lamp's batteries for later use. The researchers say a single charge can power a 50-watt Led light for two hours - enough time for local villagers to get their evening work done.

The university gave ten Plant Lamps to the villagers of Nuevo Saposoa in October 2015. So far, they have been a huge success! Elmer Ramirez, the UT professor who invented the lamp, believes the Plant Lamp could help improve the lives of many people, especially small rainforest communities, 42% of whom have no electricity.

Rik-rrork. That's the sound made by frogs singing at night. You might have thought the noises were just the musical sounds of ure. You probably didn't realize that you were listening to frogs' communicating with one another. These familiar sounds are not random(随意的) but are actually meaningful to frogs.

Being Heard but Not Seen

Frogs are good at being heard but not seen. These animals have several characters that protect them n predators (捕食者 ). One is their size. Most frogs are small, which helps them hide easily. Many frogs have coloring that allows them to hide in their environment, making it difficult for predators to find them. In addition, most frogs are active at night. So it is difficult for most animals to see them in the dark.

Small but Loud

Frogs call to tell other frogs where they are. Their voices can be very loud. But when frogs feel the footsteps of a larger animal, they become silent.

Many of the world's frogs live in rain forests, where there are many different animals calling to their own species (物种 ) in their own ways. Frogs need to call loudly enough to be heard through the noise in order to find other frogs.

Singing with Purpose

Peter Narins is a scientist who studies how frogs call to one another. He has learned that frogs use their calls to help them tell friend from enemy. They sing the same notes at the same volume (音量 ) each time they call. In addition, Narins has found that frogs of the same species always sing the same patterns (模式 ). These patterns are like a code that is different from other animals' calls and difficult for others to copy. Narins also observed that timing plays a role in frog calls. Many frogs call only at a certain time of night.

More Work to Do

Scientists want to better understand the purpose of frog calls. Studies continue to explore the details of frogs' unique communication. Being heard but not seen is one way frogs stay safe. The idea that they have found a way to survive in a dangerous world is simply amazing.
