The Clean Your Plate Campaign began on the Internet in January, 2013. It calls on people to reduce food waste. China in recent years has experienced serious problems with wasted food. CCTV reported in January that the food Chinese people waste every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year.

Chinese people are well—known for their friendly behavior towards guests. Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food.

It's important for everyone to reduce food waste. However, wasting food is still a serious problem in China. We still have a long way to go.

President Xi Jinping is encouraging people to be less wasteful, and he told Party members to cut    back on wasteful holiday banquets(宴会). He said they should be more careful when spending the____people's money.

Wasting food certainly goes against what Xi Jinping calls,"the Chinese tradition of being hardworking and thrifty(节俭)."Having a "clean plate" is just a traditional and important thing to do.

Robots are very important in our daily life now. People like robots because they can do things for us. They can do housework. They can deal with data (处理数据) fast. Some people think robots can do everything nicely. But some things that are easy for us are difficult for robots. For example, robots have difficulty picking up things. This may make you feel surprised because even babies can pick up things easily. That's because our brains tell us how to use our hands to hold things. But robots can't understand these kinds of things. So they often break or drop things. 

Many scientists are trying to deal with this problem. Among them is Ken Goldberg from the University of California, Berkeley, the US. He has studied the problem for years. Finally, he came up with an answer to the question. He built a database for robots. All kinds of information about a thing, such as its size and shape, are in the database. Before a robot picks up a thing, it can find the information about the thing. In this way, the robot can pick up the thing easily. 

A 70-year old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 23-year-old son who had just finished college. Suddenly a crow stayed on their window. The father asked his son, "What is this? The son replied, "It is a crow." After a few minutes, the father asked for the second time. The son said, "Father, I have just told you it is a crow."

After a little while, the old father asked his expression of anger was felt in the son's tone when he said to his father, "It is a crow, a crow." A few seconds later, the father asked his son again. This time the son shouted at his father. "Why do you keep asking me again and again, although I have told you so many times IT IS A CROW?"

Later, the father went to his room and came back with an old diary, which he had kept since his was born. When the son read it, he saw the following words: Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him 23 times that it was a crow, I did not feel angry, but I was glad for his innocence(天真).

After reading these, the son came to know he shouldn't look on his father as a hard task when he was old, and from then on, he tried to be nice to his father.

Woodcarving (木雕) is a traditional folk art form in China. Chen Jia, a young woman from Chaozhou, has concentrated (集中精力) herself on passing forward and innovating (创新) Chaozhou woodcarving.

Chen, born in the 1990s, began to learn the craft (工艺) when she was14 years old under the influence and support of her family. "I wanted to give up several times during the learning process, as I often hurt myself. It's also very difficult. My father wanted me to give up woodcarving and find an easier job. However, I fought on." Chen said.

Chen recalled that she had a strong sense of achievement when her first woodcarving artwork, which took her several months to finish, was sold. "Since I have learned it, I just keep going." said the artist.

To finish one woodcarving piece, a woodcarver usually needs more than 30 carving knives and wooden hammers of different sizes. A common theme for carvings includes different sea animals. In the past, Chaozhou woodcarvings were mainly used to decorate buildings, including serving as furniture and ceremonial objects. However, they have started to lose their charm among people living in modern life.

To attract young people to better appreciate the traditional art form, Chen has innovated on the craft in terms of its themes, shapes and usage. She now carves out small decorative objects and articles for daily use, hoping that more and more people will accept the art works as their liking.
