    So, You Want to Be a Writer?

    What are some tips on becoming a writer?

    ⒈Read everything you can. Most writers are good readers. They read because they love to lose themselves in books. They like the sounds of language and the way that reading a good description can feel as satisfying as winning a race or eating really good food. . Do you like stories that are fast-paced and full of unexpected twists? Do you prefer to read books with characters who seem like someone you might know? Do you like to feel scared or do you like a story that makes you laugh until you cry? Think about the types of writing you like best, and try to identify the qualities that attract you.

    ⒉ It's easy to forget a good idea if you do not record it immediately. If you get in the habit of carrying a notebook or journal with you everywhere you go, you can write down anything you want to remember. When you are talking to friends in the cafeteria or waiting for the bus, something might give you an idea for a character or a scene in a story. You might have a dream you don't want to forget, or you might just write down the lyrics of a song you love.

    ⒊Do your homework. If you decide that you would like to submit your work for publication, make sure you do your research. If you are sending your writing to a magazine, look through old issues. If you are submitting to a book publisher, explore their website to make sure your material is similar to (but not exactly the same as) other books they publish.

    ⒋Stay positive. A writer's life can be frustrating. Sometimes it's hard to sit down and write. This is why perseverance is an important quality for a writer to have.

A. Talk to friends.

B. Keep a notebook.

C. As you read, pay attention to what speaks to you.

D. You may get many refusals before you receive a single acceptance.

E. Does it seem like your writing fits in with other stories or articles?

F. These everyday thoughts and observations can be material for your writing one day.

G. Writing is a good way to clear your mind and make room for more of the "good stuff".

    Anyone who has ever tried to stop smoking knows how difficult it is to quit. There is no lack of information about how unhealthy smoking is for you- not to mention the unpleasant smell. So why would teens ever begin to smoke?

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Research shows that the majority of smokers lit up their first cigarette in their early or mid-teens, precisely at a time when children are beginning to establish their own identity apart from their parents. Smoking can be an act of rebellion(反抗) against parents or authority figures, as well as a way to fit in with others and feel accepted.

    Here are some things that parents can do to help a child stay smoke-free.

    Start talking to your teen about how bad smoking is for him early, well before his teens. Keep talking, too. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} For example, smoking makes your hair and clothing smell bad, stains the teeth, and reduces your lung power to play sports.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Talk about the addictive power of smoking and tell him while those few cigarettes are his choice, the addiction that occurs shortly afterwards makes him powerless to decide whether or not he wants to light up.

    Work on self-esteem(自尊) and self-confident with your teen. Much of the attraction of smoking is to gain acceptance. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A.Young teens live in the moment, too.

B.Play on your child's desire to make his own choices.

C.The answer lies in the develop-mental stage of your teens.

D.Give your child the facts, but focus on the things he can relate to.

E.Help your teen to feel good about himself without having to smoke.

F.One discussion will not be enough to help your child not to smoke.

G.They won't be aware of how powerful addictive smoking is in a very short time.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. Some use their lights to communicate. Others shine to hunt, to mate or to protect themselves. The vampire squid, for example, gives out a cloud of light to scare enemies.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#}.

    In 2013, the US company Gleaux said it had created the world's first light-producing plant, reported the Daily Mail.

    He and other researchers are working toward a future in which glowing plants replace lamps and glowing trees line highways.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}, making them glow to let farmers know when they need water or are ready to be picked.

    While GleauX is working on glowing plants, the French company Glowee is trying to use glowing bacteria to light up shop windows and street signs. It is the same type of bacteria that causes certain sea animals to light up.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#}.The company is now working on a light that shines brighter, lasts longer and comes in different colors.

    “Our goal is to change the way we produce and use light,” said Glowee founder Sandra Rey. “We want to offer a global solution that will reduce the 19 percent of electricity consumption used to produce light.”

    Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.

    For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”

    When you're in high school, it can be difficult to find a job. You may not have much, or any, formal work experience and there aren't many jobs available for teenagers. However, if you're looking for a job, there are things you can do to help get your application noticed and help yourself get hired. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Don't be shy.

    Tell everyone you know you are looking for a job. Many jobs aren't advertised and you may be able to get a good job lead from a friend or family member.

With the majority of children not going into school at the moment, staff, parents and pupils are pulling together to make sure their education is a success. As a teacher, I'd like to give some tips to parents and pupils on remote learning.

FOR PUPILS

Get online, on time.

Make sure you do log on in good time for the beginning or live lessons, rather than joining the lesson ten minutes in.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

Play your part.

Contribute to the lesson. Talk, put your hand up, send messages in the chat whatever they might be. Teachers and other pupils love to see that. And don't be afraid to ask questions.

Take proper screen breaks during the day.

Enjoy your break time.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Get outside, read a book, phone someone. At break or lunchtime in school you wouldn't sit in a classroom and continue to work, so you shouldn't do it at home either.

FOR PARENTS

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

It's often surprising how technologically able a young child is now, with the world of smart phones and the Internet. So let them show you what they need to be doing in class.

Give praise.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Now online, we share a lot of praise and give out school awards. They also need to be praised at home for getting their work done. Take a look at what they have been doing.

Get involved if you can.

This might be difficult for parents doing full-time jobs, but try to work together on something. We assign students research projects some of which might be challenging to them.{#blank#}5{#/blank#} And it's also good for their own well-being getting away from a laptop to make a cardboard castle or whatever it might be.

A. Let the child take the lead.

B. Keep pace with technology.

C. Don't stay sitting at your computer.

D. That's a perfect opportunity for parents to help.

E. Thus you will find the rest of the class challenging.

F. Otherwise you would have missed out on some teaching

G. At school kids are getting approval for the work they are doing well.
