    What do you think the future will be like? Here are some answers from some students.

    Mary: Everyone will have a computer at home. There will also be many machines in the future. Then people will work only two or three days in a week.

    Jack: The weather in the future will be very hot. People can't live on the earth. They will have to look for (寻找) another planet to live on.

    Linda: I think the life in the future will be nice. There will be a lot of flowers and trees. And cities will look like parks.

    Henry: Every family will have a family doctor, so people will be seldom ill (很少生病) They will live to 120 years old.

    In recent years, a number of Chinese technological innovations (科技创新) have been making waves around the world. Among them, four stand out. They are known as "four new great inventions of modern China. They have made our daily lives more convenient.

    High-speed trains

    China created its first high-speed railway line in 2008. Since then, the number of passenger trips has grown by over 30 percent every year. By 2016, more than 5 billion trips had been taken on China's bullet trains(高铁), according to Xinhua News Agency.

    China is currently working on the next-generation bullet trains that will have a top speed of 400 kilometers per hour. By 2020, one-fifth of the country's 150, 000-km railway network will be used by high-speed trains. This network will link more than 80 percent of major cities across China, said Xinhua.

    Mobile payment

    Mobile payment is turning China into a "cashless society" led by the third-party payment companies like Alipay. For example, instead of paying by cash, customers now pay for goods simply by typing a short password into Alipay app on their mobile devices.

    Users can also pay their bills through Alipay, such as their water and electricity bills. Alipay also supports cross-border(跨境的)online and in-store payment, which allows users to buy things on international websites and apps.

    Shared bikes

    Shared bike services started in Western countries. But China has surprised the world with how

quickly it has adopted dockless(无柱的) shared bikes.

    Unlike traditional bike-sharing method, dockless bikes allow users to simply pick up or park a bike on the street through GPS and smartphone app.

    To unlock a bike, you just need to scan a QR code on a shared bike with a smartphone app. After you finish riding, you can park it at available parking areas, lock it and pay for ride through mobile payment services.

    Online shopping

    With around 751 million internet users, China has been the world's largest and fastest-growing line shopping market.

    Online shopping now accounts for 15. 5 percent of total retail sales in China, according to Xinhua. Thanks to lower costs and fewer licensing requirements(执照要求), it's easier for sellers

to open an online shop in China than a brick-and- mortar shop(实体店).

    It also helped to create jobs of rural areas. In 2016, online shopping created more than 20 million jobs in rural areas, with over 8. 1 million running their own online shops, said Xinhua.

    Light and shadow（影子）are friends. They usually go together. We receive light every day. At the same time, we produce shadow.

    Light cannot shine through you. Your body stops it from passing. There is a dark spot on the ground next to you. The light cannot reach the dark spot. This is your shadow.

    At noon the Sun shines over your head. Your body stops very little light from reaching the ground.

    We love light, especially sunlight. Without sunlight, life on the Earth is impossible. Most of us like to stand in the shadow of a tree in summer. But some people are afraid of their own shadow at night. They do not want to walk in a dark street. They do not want to see the shadow either. But still light and shadow usually go together.

    There are many animals in danger, such as pandas, elephants, and South China tigers.

    The South China tiger is the smallest tiger in Asia. It is also one of the rarest tigers in the world. Scientists think that there might be a few South China tigers living in the wild, but they are still not sure about it.

    The South China tiger is special in its face, but it shares the height with the common tigers. In the past, the South China tigers lived in the forests. But today more than half of them are living in zoos. If there are not safe places for them, they will die out soon. Baby South China tigers need their mothers' milk in the first two months. The mother teaches her babies how to hunt.

    Scientists think that people should do something to protect the rare animals. If people take action together, these animals will have a better place to live in. We'll also live in a better world.

    Is there intelligent (有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said "no" or "we don't know". But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers (天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists (存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these beings (人；生物).

    Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. "This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life," say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. "Tools like the Hubble Telescope (哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies," says Shostak. "And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth."

    In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes (高倍望远镜) allow scientists to discover smaller planets. These planets might have intelligent life.

    Have beings from space already visited Earth? "Probably not," says Shostak. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other way, such as radio signals (信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don't have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.
