    We are surrounded by messages trying to get our attention. Advertisers, politicians and other groups all try to get us to agree with them.. Propaganda is not always a bad thing, but it often hides the truth about a topic. It's very similar to advertising, whose goal is to get people to buy something, while propaganda is to change what people believe.

    Propaganda Techniques

    To create propaganda, a common technique is name-calling. A politician might call someone a traitor or liar, which makes the other person look bad. Another is the trend technique. People want to be on the side in the favor.. Some propaganda is based on fear. It scares people into choosing a certain side or taking action, which might not be bad. Anti-smoking campaigns are one example. They may scare people into thinking that if they smoke, they will get cancer.

    .

    Propaganda is used by many groups, such as businesses, politicians and the government. It is spread through posters, television and radio. The Internet makes it easy to send messages to the whole world.

    Types of Propaganda

    Political propaganda has been around as long as there have been politicians.. People have used it for many years. War propaganda began during World War I, more than 100 years ago.

    To see if propaganda is saying the truth, people need to do extra work. For example, ads might always sound like they're true. But before you believe them, try to think about who created and paid for them. Find out why they did it..

A. Propaganda Targets

B. Propaganda Mediums

C. Another word for this is propaganda

D. So most people will agree with those politicians

E. Then, you can decide if they're being honest or not

F. However, religious propaganda was actually the first official one

G. People might join someone who claims to be popular or winning

    Most drinks stating that they are fruitflavored (水果味道的) contain no fruit at all, while most of the rest contain only a small quantity of fruit, according to a study carried by the British Food Commission.

    “Shoppers need to check the labels (标签) before buying drinks, though sometimes the actual content can be nonexistent,” said Food Commission spokesperson Ian Tokelove. “Food production is highly competitive. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} It will increase profits, and consumers won't always realize they are being tricked.”

    Flavorings are focused on the flavors of natural food products such as fruits, meats and vegetables, or creating flavor for food products that do not have the desired flavors. Researchers analyzed the contents of 28 strawberryflavored products sold in stores. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Of the 11 products that did contain strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit. In addition, each juice box contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Let's take jam as an example. Some strawberryflavored jam was labeled as containing no artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners, but it contained absolutely no strawberries at all.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Consumers have the rights to know clearly about what they have bought. Under current UK law, food packages do not have to distinguish between natural and artificial flavoring. “Describing a product as strawberry flavor and covering the surface of the packet with pictures of strawberries is misleading. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Unfortunately, it is also legal and widespread,” Tokelove said. “It's time to take measures to protect the consumers' rights.”

A. The products which contain real fruit are popular with people.

B. Even products advertised as more natural often contained no fruit.

C. They found that about 60 percent of them didn't contain any fruit at all.

D. If companies can cut their costs by using flavoring, they are likely to do so.

E. It is important and necessary to demand a small amount of flavoring in the products.

F. Actually the product contains just a tiny percentage of strawberry or even no fruit at all.

G. The Food Commission suggested all flavors used in a product should be listed on the packaging.

Your Teen Is Falling Asleep in Class

    Teens have a busy morning schedule as they need to wake up and get moving very early in order to catch a bus and get to school by the required time. This means teens need to get their rest the night before or they will be too tired to learn anything at school. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    When a teen falls asleep in class, two things happen: he/she misses what is being taught and he/she loses the respect of the teacher. He/She may also receive a consequence from the school, depending on the classroom discipline policy. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    To prevent your teen from being sleepy in class, try these three tips:

    *Set a time for “lights out” on school nights. This is never any later than 10 p.m. and preferably 9 p.m. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Soft music can be on and used to help calm your teen.

    *Help your teen develop a nighttime routine that involves activities that slow them down for the end of the day. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Turning off the computer and disconnecting from friends and the excitement of the day an hour before bedtime will also help your teen relax.

    * {#blank#}5{#/blank#} This will reinforce (增强) what it feels like to be rested and capable of accomplishing what he/she wants.

A.What's worse, they may even fall asleep in class.

B.Set a good example and show him/her your love for learning.

C.Taking a bath and reading are two activities that work well.

D.Point out the positives after your teen has had a good night's rest.

E.All of these things affect your teen's academic success and can be avoided.

F.“Lights out” means the computer, television, lights and cell phone should be off.

G.While your teen keeps his/her goals in line with your expectations, he/she may have his/her own goals.

任务型阅读

    Teens are certainly confusing and complicated, but there is one thing that's clear about them: More than anything else, they want to fit in with their peers. They want and need to stay connected. Without connection, they feel lonely, anxious and sad{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Teens, like adults, run into all sorts of dilemmas with their friends. Friendships are neither all good nor all bad. As an adult, you have experience with these sorts of friends and have made your own adjustments in these relationships. Given both your own life experience and your concern for your teens, you're in an excellent position to help your teens set boundaries with friends. Certainly, some friendships are worth maintaining, while some are not,{#blank#}2{#/blank#}There are many ways you can help your teens handle these relationships effectively. Here are some steps I would suggest taking:

    Teach your teens to label their feelings. They need to know what it is that they are feeling first to effectively set limits and boundaries with friends. Help them label setbacks, exhaustion, disappointment and anger. This is no small task. Many kids struggle with labeling their feelings.

     {#blank#}3{#/blank#}If they sense that something is wrong in a friendship, they're probably right, end they need to quit it as soon as possible.

    Explain to your teens that they can't be all things to all friends. And let them know that friendships are most likely to grow and continue if they feel good about them.

    Discuss different ways to set boundaries. Explain to your kids that just as it makes sense to say yes at times{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Just as it's fine to spend lots of time with a friend during the week, it's equally OK to spend less time with the same friend when that friend is being too demanding or needy.

    Look at your behavior in relationships{#blank#}5{#/blank#} They are quietly watching your every move. So .make sure you're setting a good example for them to follow in your relationships as well.

A. so they need to tel what are right relationships

B. and they shall find their way ou of those friendship

C. Keep in mind that you are your teens' most important role model

    Credit card debts, loans and overdrawn (透支) accounts — these are costly mistakes you don't want your children to make when they grow up. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} According to Mylene Lopa, a chief marketing officer of Sun Life Financial, you should teach your kids about money as early as possible. Start simple and expose them to the following basic concepts.

    Spending

    Giving your children some pocket money is a good way to teach them how to be responsible. "The money should just be enough to buy them a treat, like a juice or a biscuit.     {#blank#}3{#/blank#} They are always cute and colorful, making saving a fun and positive activity for kids. Encourage your children further by bringing them to the bank and showing them how to manage their savings themselves. It makes them feel more grown-up and they love it," says Mylene.

    Earning

    For children, earning usually comes in the form of gifts they receive for good grades or behavior. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} "Material rewards should be saved for even greater achievements," Mylene advises, "like if they top the class or they really go beyond the call of duty to help." This may let your children know making money is not so easy.
