浙江省桐乡市2019年九年级文理科基础调研英语部分(2019.03)

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入一个适当的词,或填入括号中所给单词的正确形式。

In the United States, lots of young adults are living at home with their parents, according to the Pew Research Center. Pew researchers found that 32 percent of 18-to-34-year-old Americans lived at their  (parent) home in 2014. That is (high) percentage nationwide since 1940.

More young adults lived at home with their parents than lived with a husband, wife, or partner in 2014. And students will return home after graduation. Hannah Raines plans to move back in with her parents  she completes her study program at the University. She would like to get a job (save) money for graduate school(研究生院).

Raines' parents, Jim and Juli, already have experience with an adult child returning home. Hannah's twin brother, Dakota, returned home last year after the building he lived in was put up for sale.

"It was very natural," Jim and Juli said. They thought (have) their adult children back at home is good for (they). The only problem is where all four family members should park their cars.

Experts say younger Americans (experience) different economic problems than earlier generations. Pay is not keeping up  housing costs or the bigger loans(贷款) many graduating students must pay off after leaving school. So moving home for young adults may be a good (decide). This will help them to save money or pay off the loans.

Is there intelligent (有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said "no" or "we don't know". But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alex Barnett are astronomers (天文学家). They believe intelligent life lives somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact(联系) it.

Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life lives on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. "This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life," say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size — the universe is huge. "Tools like the Hubble Telescopes(哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies," says Shostak. "And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to the earth."

In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes (高倍望远镜) allow scientists to find smaller planets — the size of Mars or the earth — in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.

Has intelligent life from space already visited the earth? "Probably not," says Shostak. "It's a long way away. However, intelligent life may contact us in other ways, such as radio. In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don't have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other."

Ten years ago, I took up studying luck. I wanted to know why some people are always in the right place at the right time, while others always experience ill luck. Many people volunteered for my research. Over the years I interviewed them, watched their lives and had them take part in my experiments(实验).

I carried out a simple experiment to discover why there were differences in their ability to find lucky chances. I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper and asked them to look through it and tell me how many photographs were inside. I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper saying, "Tell the researcher you have seen this and win $50." This message took up half of the page and was more than two inches(英尺) high. It was looking at everyone straight in the face, but unlucky people tended to(倾向于) miss it and lucky people tended to notice it.

Unlucky people are just more nervous than lucky people. They are busy looking only for what they need and this stops them from noticing the unexpected. As a result, they miss out on chances. Lucky people tend to be more relaxed and open. They can see everything that is in front of them, rather than just what they are looking for.

My research shows that lucky people live by several principles(原则). Here are some of these principles:

* Listen to your gut instincts(直觉) — they are often right.

* Be open to new experiences and break your normal thought patterns.

* Spend a few moments each day remembering things that went well.

* See yourself being lucky before an important meeting or phone call.
