Kids seem to spend endless hours on smartphones, computers and tablets these days. The best thing parents can do to prevent it is to encourage youngsters to spend more time outdoors in the sunlight.

There has been a massive rise around the globe in short-sightedness—or myopia as it's officially known—over recent decades. Myopia or short-sightedness is becoming more common. Lack of natural light seems to be the key issue. “The main factor seems to be a lack of exposure to direct sunlight, because children who study a lot and who use computers or smartphones or tablet computers a lot have less opportunity to run around outside and are less exposed to sunshine and because of that children seem to be at more risk of developing shortsightedness.”

Professor Hammond says, “It may be there's no coincidence that in East Asian countries, the most myopic ones all relate may to be the that maths league tables(排名表). These kids are being pushed with very intensive education from a very young age and spend a lot of time indoors studying close up. Therefore the concern is that all close work—like playing with the iPhone—carries the potential that it could make them more shortsighted.”

The best thing to do, say the experts, is to get children playing outside as much as possible. “In a perfect world, probably on average across the week and the weekend, two hours a day outdoors is protective of becoming short-sighted in children. Healthy diet is really also important—in terms of getting oily fish, green vegetables, green leafy vegetables as much as possible.

“What we need to look at is ways of modifying the impact that these activities have on their visual development.” Professor Hammond said, “There are eye drops and other treatments to slow myopia progression. But in terms of preventing myopia itself, there isn't any data out there at the moment in terms of the question, 'Could the drops we use slow progression or stop myopia developing at all? ' ”

    (1) What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A . Much natural light. B . Running around outside. C . Computers or smartphones. D . Less exposure to sunshine.
    (2) What does Professor Hammond think of short-sightedness among East Asian children?
A . It appears quite by chance. B . It is not serious enough. C . It largely relate to iPad or iPhone. D . It connects with their study pressure.
    (3) What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A . The myopic students will decrease in the future. B . Researchers have found methods to reduce myopia. C . It's still a hard job to control the children's myopia. D . Researchers needn't collect any more data on myopia.
    (4) What is the best title for the text?
A . Common troubles of students B . Problems caused by short-sightedness C . Staying outdoors more to keep good eyesight D . The importance of protecting kids

She sat at the picnic table alone. Recess(休息) was in full swing. She remained awkward around her classmates. She seemed unsure of what to do or say, yet I could see her eyes longing for acceptance. Many students had already decided that her friendship would not be worth the energy required to overcome the awkwardness. Others teased her. Most ignored her — except for one.

Brianna, the class clown, was making the other students laugh, as usual. “Brianna, do you see Molly down there? Would you mind walking down there and inviting her to come up here with the rest of us?”

Brianna sighed. I could tell she didn't want to sacrifice precious minutes of her own recess to do what I was asking of her, but I also knew her heart. She often thought of others before herself — a rare character for anyone, much less a kid.

Knowing this choice was hard for her, I pulled out a D-buck, our class currency. Though bribery(行贿) was not the ideal way to handle this situation, I needed her cooperation.

“Here, I'll pay you for your time.”

She offered an insincere smile, grasped the green paper, and headed down the hill.

As the rest of the children screamed and laughed, my eyes locked on Brianna as she neared the picnic table. Molly could be difficult, and I wouldn't have been surprised if she sent Brianna back alone, refusing her invitation. When she encouraged herself to a standing position, I sighed with relief.

A minute later, 1 felt tap on my shoulder. “Here, Mrs. D.” She handed me the D-buck.

        “ Why?” I asked.

“I shouldn't keep this.” Her eyes fell to her feet, guilt radiating from her quiet voice. “I don't want Molly to think 1 only went to get her so I could earn a muck. She's my friend.”

A moment later, they were all laughing again, and who should I see among them, laughing for the first time that week? Molly.

    (1) According to the author, what was Molly like?
A . She ignored the jokes from other kids. B . She felt awkward at being teased. C . She desired to be accepted by other kids. D . She had no energy to make friends.
    (2) What distinguished Brianna from other kids?
    A . Her clown talent. B . Her cooperation. C . Her honesty. D . Her kindness.
    (3) How did the author feel as Brianna walked to Molly?
    A . Worried. B . Satisfied. C . Exicted. D . Confused.
    (4) What was the purpose of Brianna's returning the ID-buck to the author?
A . TO avoid losing it one day. B . TO get a pure friendship with Molly. C . TO bribe her teacher. D . TO escape from being scolded by her teacher:

The researchers say a person loses two months for every kilogram overweight they are— and seven years for smoking a packet of cigarettes a day.

Unusually, the Edinburgh university team found their answers by analysing differences in people's genetic code or DNA. Finally they think it will show new ways of helping us to live longer.

The group used the genetic code of more than 600, 000 people who are taking part in a natural experiment. If someone smokes, drinks, drops out of school and is overweight, it can be difficult to identify the impact of one specific unhealthy behavior.

Instead, the researchers turned to the natural experiment. Some people carry mutations(变异) in their DNA that increase(食欲) or make them more likely to put on weight, so researchers were able to compare those programmed to eat more with those who were not. The research team also found specific mutations in human DNA that alter lifespan (寿命).

Mutations in a gene (a set of instructions in DNA) that is involved in running the immune system could add seven months of life on average.

People with a mutation that increased levels of bad cholesterol knocked eight months off lifespan.

A rare mutation in a gene—APOE—linked to dementia reduced lifespan by 11 months.

And one that made smoking more appealing cut lives by five months.

Dr Joshi says that while genes do influence lifespan, “you've got even more influence” through the choices you make. Dr Joshi said, “We hope to discover genes affecting lifespan to give us new information about ageing and construct treatment tor ageing.”

There are also some disease mutations that clearly affect lifespan and to destructive effect, such as the Huntington's gene. People with Huntington's often die in their 20s.

However, in order to follow people until the end of their lives, many of the people studied were born before 1940.

    (1) What is the most difficult for the researchers to find?
A . The differences in people's genetic code. B . The reasons why people put on weight very easily. C . The results of many natural and massive experiments. D . One bad behaviour's effect on people with many bad behaviours.
    (2) Which of the following mutations affects lifespan most greatly?
A . One linked to controlling immune system. B . One increasing unhealthy cholesterol. C . One called APOE involved in dementia. D . One making smoking more attractive.
    (3) What's the meaning of Dr Joshi's study?
A . To help stop mutations. B . To find diseases earlier. C . To make people live longer. D . To reduce the effects of genes.
    (4) Why did researchers mainly study people born before 1940?
A . To follow them until they die. B . To educate them an extra year. C . To show they are more important. D . To make them live happier.
