Known as the" Daughter of Dunhuang", Fan Jinshi has made great contributions to the Mogao Grottoes.
Fan's love of Dunhuang began in 1962. After graduating from Peking University, she decided to work at Dunhuang though the conditions there were1 . She and other workers made great efforts to protect the treasures from sand and dampness. They 2 introduced new materials and technologies to repair the damaged murals(壁画). In addition to protection, Fan has achieved success in Dunhuang studies. In 2015, Fan retired but her efforts to study and protect the Mogao Grottoes 3 . With her eyes set on the future, she has taken great care to build up a talent pool in Dunhuang.
"I was given a(n)4 to do something for the Mogao Grottoes. " she says. "My life is 5 , and I have done a good thing for our world. "
I was two at that time and I was sitting on the balcony(阳台) with my 83-year-old great- grandma. When mom walked up to call us in for1 , great-grandma looked up at her and said, "I' d like to watch the sunset before we go inside. It's a day in my life that is now gone. I want to2 it until the very last minute. "
Scientists explain that the first seven years of your childhood are 3 to how you develop through your teenage and adult life. They make a point that our family members and communities in the first seven years can4 on what we believe and how we think and act.
Perhaps that's why I grew up to fall in love with sunsets. When I think of that day, I smile and feel 5 . Because as I was just a baby, the 6 who was writing the last few pages of her story sewed(缝) the meaning of life deep within the fabric(织物) of my thoughts.
The sunset tells a story, 7 a picture of the path ahead. It reminds you that all great things are in a process of rising and returning. And, 8 you' re lucky, the sun will rise again in the morning to gift you with a new day, as will it return, taking back with it a day from your life.
So, what's the meaning of life? To answer that question let's go back to my great-grandma's9 . The meaning of life is to make every day count 10 you can. It's to be alive. It's to do what good you can with it. It's to find peace within the process of rising and returning.
When I was about five, like most children, I was curious(好奇的) to everything. Sitting in front of my crayons, I wanted to" discover" what was inside them. So I cut them in two. Disappointedly, I found nothing but more crayon inside of them. When I was a little older, I was interested in the inner parts of pens, televisions and so on. In fact, my childhood interest in the building blocks(构成要素) of things led me to work in engineering.
I spent six years as part of the team that designed the Shard — the 2nd highest building in Europe. After having explored the big, I decided to turn to the small. I realized it was the seven key elements form the basis of the modern world: the spring, the pump, string, the nail, the wheel, the lens and the magnet. They have created and changed our technology, which have also had a big influence on our history, society, communication, transportation, arts and culture. For example, the speaker on my phone through which I could hear the voices depended on a magnet. Even as I thought about more larger objects — factories, cars, satellites and so on — again and again, I came back to the same seven key elements.
Look around yourself and ask questions about what you see: awaken that childhood curiosity. Hopefully, this will encourage you to explore the world of engineering, and is something which will lead you to form a better understanding of the building blocks of our world.
Three years ago, I am just three months away from finishing my degree from San Diego State University. After almost ten terms of schooling, I find online instruction to be such a good way to receive an education.
The first reason for this is its flexibility(灵活性). With online classes, I have been able to balance my schoolwork, job, after-school activities, community service and social life. In a traditional classroom setting, students are asked to have classes, take tests and meet together for their course work at a set time and place. However, online instruction allows students from wherever they want to comfortably complete their tasks within a specifically given time.
Also, ▲ . During my online study, I have time with my love for music production, reading, writing and exercise. The convenience of my online schooling helped me to get satisfaction from my life while also allowing me to keep a healthy routine.
More effort is required in E-learning, however. When I began this educational lifestyle, I quickly came to the understanding that self-discipline(自律能力) was what was going to matter the most if one wished to succeed.
Finally, online education can help us to prepare for the coming future of technology and it will become the standard for many things as we move forward. Why not work to accept this reality as soon as we can?
The lessons learned through online classes can lead students to endless opportunities. E- learning has helped students strengthen their sense of self-discipline, as well as their time- management, flexibility, and communication skills. These will only make them more skillful in the future.
For years, scientists have been researching how exposing(暴露) humans to nature may improve their physical and mental health. People are encouraged to visit forests and grow houseplants. Now researchers are also testing whether we can get some of the same benefits from experiencing nature in VR(虚拟现实).
Scientists are trying to understand what exactly about nature makes a real difference in health results. One tool that might help is VR, says Hector Alvarez, who wanted to find out if simply seeing nature can relax people. In an experiment, VR allowed him to expose people to the visual(视觉的) experience of nature while controlling temperature, light and air pollution. He is now preparing to publish his research.
People can feel safe faster in environments with lots of plants, Hector explains. "That's why I was interested in VR. If it is right that we feel safe faster in nature, it should bring your stress levels down. "
So far, Hector says, research shows there are some health improvements by experiencing nature in VR. However, they are smaller than those got in the real nature.
Gretchen Daily is an environmental scientist at Stanford University. She agrees at parts of this research, especially in situations without nature. But in the long term, connection with nature in the real world can not be replaced. To some degree, Gretchen worries that the idea might take off that VR can replace the real thing. "If that's taken very far, that' ll be really harmful overall because the real thing is necessary in so many ways, " she says. "We just cannot live on a dead planet. "
Years ago, Neil Ansell lived in a house in the Welsh mountains. He didn't have a phone, and in the five years he lived there alone, not a (单个) person walked by.
When he returned to society, Ansell had to change on his own to make him suitable for the new situation. "What I found difficult was the amount of talking. " Ansell said, "and a thing I noticed was that I started to lose my sense of who am I. "
Could social distancing influence our social skills? In fact, the question isn't only about how many people you can reach out to. (而不是), it's about how you consider your situation. "Solitude"(独处) involves being alone without being lonely, just like Ansell. But" loneliness" is a very different situation, in which a person wants more social connection.
However, it s that escaping from society might lead to some unexpected results. For example, people who feel lonely are usually more likely to make social mistakes — such as saying the w thing.
Teenagers with a preference for spending time alone might have poorer social skills. And research has shown that, while some people might think that they prefer being alone, in fact, they enjoy connecting with others, even with total (陌生人).
Maybe we need social practice. Communicating with others teaches us to feel valued and helps us to (正确) understand others, which helps us to have more positive social experiences.
Are you ready to step towards your future — the beginning of high school? Are you nervous about it? If you welcome the experience as well as its challenges, your first year ( be) successful.
For your high school study, there are easy ( suggestion) you can take to get good grades. The most important thing is not being afraid to raise your hand and ask questions in class. If you are unsure about a certain topic, then you will have trouble understanding the lessons you'll have later.
It's important ( develop) good study habits early on. Middle school is different from high school students have to review at home, and many of them don't realize they have to learn how to study properly. For example, while the teacher is writing on the board, you should be taking notes, and after the homework ( finish), you should review.
Besides, you should expect your friendships to change as well. You may come in with certain group of friends, but over the next few years that group might break up. This doesn't mean you've done anything bad; rather, it's only ( nature) that as your interests change, your friends change, too.
High school, a new experience, is supposed to be a time of self-discovery and is meant to be among the greatest years of your life. So go out, make friends, and have fun!
Achievements(成就) isn't easy. In fact, you will never feel a sense of achievement from doing something that is easy for you.
The first time I climbed a mountain that was more than 5, 000 meters high, it was terribly difficult: I was cold, I felt sick, and I couldn't eat. But I kept on and achieved my goal. It was great! The second time I climbed a higher mountain, since I was better prepared, it was not as difficult, and .
Yet the more difficult it is to achieve the goal, the more you have to love it and have a passion(热情) for it in order to reach it. Passion sets apart the people who love their work from the people who suffer through their work.
The American psychologist Angela Duckworth has studied people who are successful — swimming champions, CEOs, and , which is the ability to keep on even with failure and hardship.
But courage is not just something that some people are born with and some people aren't. It comes from passion. If you want to be successful, you need to find the thing that you have a passion for and hold on with it. Just try as many things as you can as early as possible, and.
Most of us would feel a lot more satisfaction doing something we have a passion for than something we don't. And , whether it's winning a spelling competition or an Olympic medal — or climbing a mountain that's higher than any you've climbed before.
A. you'd better find the one thing that you love most B. most people usually have the passions for their jobs C. she said that their achievements result from courage D. reaching the top did not feel like as much of a success E. it does feel good to know you have achieved something |
